Re: How does your car smell

Bought Glade Lemon fragnance sachet as I was looking for a low priced air freshner for my car. Got it at 50 bucks (on offer). One week already passed and it's doing its duty.

Yes 10-15 minutes is enough. I usually leave the rear windows down a crack to allow humidity to escape.
I turn on the heater in recirculation mode and then head up for dinner. Then I come back and put it in fresh air mode for a few minutes and then turn off the car. The next day I use a can of AC cleaner foam and I'm good to go. This is my standard post monsoon procedure. Middle of the monsoon I do a short heating only treatment a couple of times or in case water gets in the car during normal usage to dry it off quickly. I also keep a box of Absorbia moisture remover in the car which I change as needed. I also turn off the AC and leave the fan on once I enter my lane to allow some drying during normal use.

Re: How does your car smell

I have initially used Ambipur, however, was not happy with it. Then I started using Glade from Godrej - felt it is too strong and i do not like the smell too. Now i started using DIY method (after reading posts over many blogs online):

1. I purchased a bottle (glass) with wooden cap and thread from amazon, it has a floral painting over it (downside is I cannot see how much solution is left).

2. Then i purchased Bergamot & Geranium essential oil (loved it in the past, had used as room diffuser) and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Again from amazon.

3. I made a solution - added about 5mL of essential oil with 2.5mL of rubbing alcohol.

This lasts me about 2 weeks in cold weather and about 1 week in hot weather (and car parked under sun during day).

The rubbing alcohol helps in diffusing the solution, when the car hits a pothole (no dearth in namma Bengaluru) the wooden cap is recharged with the solution. If not, one can do it manually once everyday or alternate day. The amount and type of essential oil and its ratio to the rubbing alcohol can be changed based on ones preference. I have tried 1:1 (oil: rubbing alcohol) felt the smell of isopropyl alcohol takes over the car.
Hope this helps others too.

Re: How does your car smell

I'm someone who prefers not having any perfume/fragrance in the car.

The trick I follow to remove odor from the car is very simple. In the first step, I remove all the loose dirt/dust from the mats. This is followed by spraying generous amount of Dettol solution on the mat. I have diluted the Dettol antispetic liquid in an old Colin bottle and I always keep this in the boot of the car. This antiseptic liquid takes care of removing all the microbes and sanitizes the car. Once in a month, I take time to clean all the seats and dashboard with this solution. So far, so good.

Thanks. This sounds promising and simple. What is the ratio of dettol:water you used?

Re: How does your car smell

My standard rule of thumb is to keep an Odonil in the car. I tend not to remove the silver foil fully, in order for the block to last longer. Obviously, whatever flavour is selected will be the smell. It is rarely overpowering and mostly tends to remove other odours from the car. This is a cheap and easy solution, generally costing under 50 bucks a month.

I use the ratio recommended at the back of the bottle (IIRC it was a TBSP for 250ml water). Just prepare the solution and keep it in the boot of the car. Whenever you clean the floor mats, just spray liberal amounts of this solution on the mat. Also remember to spray the solution in the boot once in a while. You'll easily notice the difference in 2-3 hours.

Trust me, I've been using this for a year now, and it works like a charm every time. There is no need to spend hundreds for those premium fresheners every alternate month.

Re: How does your car smell

I've been using the little trees vent clips for the past couple of months. Pretty good. They come in a set of 4 and a single one lasts for a month in a hatchback

Re: How does your car smell

My car is 15 years old. I have a serious issue with odours. In fact, the problem is that I don't sense any bad smell or odour, but my family does. The moment they step into the car, they complains of an unbearable odour. They even tend to vomit and in fact son vomits too often. They prefer to keep the windows open always. I am puzzled on what it could be and how to resolve. My wife is not a fan of keeping any refresher/perfumes, that makes things worse for her.

Any inputs?

Suggest a good interior and a/c duct cleaning. Also, a deodorizer packet in the car will help. Alternately, keep some camphor tablets too.

Re: How does your car smell

Purchased Dr. Charcoal non electric air purifier for my car.

Make: Dr. Charcoal.
Colour: Blue.
Weight: 500 grams
Price: Rs. 809 from Amazon India.

Initially I was not sure about this product but decided to experiment with it. Finally I bought the 500 gms. one as my car is a 7 seater. I must say that it's working. Usually after long trips my cars interior get very dirty due to kids and give a different odour. Now there is no odour at all. The product neutralizes all odours and keeps the car fresh. Must say it's working for me.

Dr. CHARCOAL will last for over a year when conventional air fresheners barely last a month. No harmful sprays or perfumes. Dr. CHARCOAL is a safe alternative to conventional air fresheners that are filled with formaldehyde, petroleum and fragrance which can lead to numerous health problems.

Even I faced a similar issue although on a smaller scale compared to yours.
For me disinfecting the car interiors worked. You can try washing the floor mats and then disinfecting by using any disinfectant. That should take care of odors to a large extent.
If the odor still persists, spray liberal amounts of diluted Dettol (my experience shared couple of posts above), it should take care of the odor issue.

When I faced a similar issue I did some quick research online and found that the issue is due to bacterial decay of organic compounds that accumulate in the car over time in hard-to-reach places. So disinfecting helps to a small extent and keeps the odor in control.

Hope this helps. I'm suggesting this based on what worked for me.

I like this Made in India idea as my favorite, "My Shaldan", is pretty much 99% fake.

Have you tried any other scents?

Re: How does your car smell

I believe regular vacuum cleaning eliminates the bad odor to a great extent in addition to this I spray some perfume occasionally and that is what I have been doing for quite some time now with good results (have used most of the car air fresheners available in the market but they do not last long).

Do you park your car under sun? My car is mostly parked in shade. I think that's where the problem starts from. Cars parked in shade tend to accumulate moisture and thus the foul smell. Whenever I park my car in sun I don't have any problems.

Based on various reviews on this forum I also bought Dr. CHARCOAL but in vain .
