Re: Helmet / Car Cameras : GoPro, Contour, etc

I want a basic In Car Camera setup just for safety purposes. With the no. of cases of road rage and violence going up, i just wanted to have something just in case plus can also use that whenever going out on trips etc.

Can someone please suggest me something thats basic in nature, small in size and costs less. Dont need any fancy stuff.

I dont mind spending upto 10k.

Check out the GoPro 3 White edition ($199) once the "looping" function gets sorted out (via firmware update). Or whatever else you get, make sure it has a nice WIDE field of view. 170+ degrees.

Looping means once the memory card gets full, it starts erasing the starting part and records over that.

Desmo, why don't you buy the cheaper car dash cams available for 50$ on eBay. I have one in my car and is good. Gets motion sensing as well.

If you are town side, drop by for a look.

Edit: will post the cam pic and videos off the cam tomorrow.

Any link? I'm trying to find one for a while. Difficult to find a decent dash cam.

Re: Helmet / Car Cameras : GoPro, Contour, etc

Here's an old video. I've removed the audio from the clip since it was an akon song on in my car stereo which i can't play on the forum. Audio is quite good for a 50$ cam.

You get options for HD or 720p recording. This was 720p and then i downsized the file to make it smaller to upload.

It was taken from this cam:

Name: Screen Shot 20121127 at 10.22.39 PM.png
Views: 1613
Size: 161.6 KB

I also have two of these cams in other cars:

Name: 2.png
Views: 1550
Size: 261.8 KB

All were bought off ebay and are working without hiccups since two years.

I've used images from ebay for representational purpose.

You can search ebay for car dash cam and there'll be a gazillion options. I even saw one with two cameras, one facing front and one back.

Thanks Doc. That helps a lot infact. I shall search Ebay.

I was also wondering whether the cameras that are used as rear parking cameras, whether they can be used since they are very small in size and would be easy to install and would also be discreet. Just need your views.

Dear Tejas,

The video quality is pretty good.

Could you please share the product name or the ebay product URL ?

The one which was used to shoot this video.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Car-Cam-...item3ccbed967d

This is also a nice option with dual lens:

Saw this one as well. Looks more smaller in package. Anyone here used something similar? Any reviews?

Re: Helmet / Car Cameras : GoPro, Contour, etc

I recently bought an "Eagle Dash Cam" from eBay India. A quick review -- It has worked pretty well for me. It ran non-stop for 8 hours on a recent interstate drive. It supports cyclic recording (overwrite oldest video clip when disk is full), motion detection (stops recording when car is stationary and starts recording when in motion). It features a configurable video clip size (2 min to 10 minutes) and I did not see it miss even a second of video when starting a new video clip. A 32GB microSD card easily supports 8 hours of recording at 720p.

For anyone interested in seeing the video output, I have cross-posted this video clip from the bad drivers thread.

Second option seems to be good too, but can we trust these HK guys ?

Please suggest other alternatives.

Yup you can trust. eBay has strict policies and i see the stars next to the dealer before buying. I've bought stuff from HK sellers via eBay before. This guy is a trusted reseller so no issues.

EDIT:

Here's another link that ships to India for free and is the same one i have.
