I got this decal with the Mobil1 cans. Think its worth putting on my car? Or would I look like a poser?
After 6K kms Mobil1 on my car,oil is brownish in colour, not black yet.
and i dont think that you need to change oil filter.

I agree.
I don't expect the usual OE filters to last 15,000 kms.
Changing midway is good. But, remember to top up the engine oil. You'll lose a couple hundred ml of dirty oil with the old filter.

Please do go by what these dealers tell you, they have nothing to lose if your engine starts giving problem coz you didnt drain the oil for 30K kms.
+1 to this. Roy, please do not extend oil drain intervals. Stick to the manufacturer recommended 10k kms for oil changes regardless of running on fully synth oil.

For the 1st 10K kms, I have used the mineral oil as provided by the workshop. Subsequently, I started using Castrol GTX Magnatec. The engine became a bit smoother. Used Magnatec for quite some time, the average drain life I maintained was 6to 6.5K kms. Recently, I have started using Motul 6100 Synergie, as of now, I have not noticed any specific improvements, however, it seems that the drain life is 10K.

Does anybody have tried using Castrol Edge, the fully synthetic oil 5W-40 grade?

Regards,
Kaustuv

i10 Engine Oil

I am planning to change the engine oil for my i10 1.2. The manual does not specifically tell the recommended but gives a whole range of recommendation right from 20W50 to 5W20.
Could anyone guide me which would be the best one and also which brand (Castrol/Shell/Motul)

I am planning to change engine oil of my M1000 tomorrow myself. Which mineral oil will be best? Car runs on LPG mostly. I suspect fake Castrol GTX is sold here because of its popularity. To avoid it I want to try different brand maybe servo/idemitsu or any other. At least genuine oil from small company is better than fake oil under big brand.

Problem I see with GTX (20w50) is that it turns black soon after running few KM's and engine heats up too much just after running 3 - 4 km (both petrol and LPG). So I just want to avoid it though I saw a CNG/LPG version of castrol at their website but still I want to avoid castrol this time.

More info:
Car runs small distances and not much frequent stop and go traffic. But I do need to go to places sometimes where jeep/suv would be better (read bad roads or no roads at all).

Hu Friends,

I am looking for synthetic oil for my santro.
Here is the recommended grades in my manual
ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil-dsc00153.jpg

Mobil1 is available in 0w40 and 5w50 grades. (850/-per lt)
Shell is 5w40
Motul 8100 is also 5w40

I am inclined towards Mobil1 but am wondering whether to go for 0w40 or 5w50? Would 0w40 be suitable for mumbai? or should I opt for the thicker 5w50? Both these grades are not mentioned in the manual above - will that be a problem?

Pls help.

I have been using Mobil1 5w50 in my Swift Vxi for about a year now and have been satisfied with its performance in an Ooty winter and a blistering Chennai summer. 0w40 is probably best avoided, as far as my (meagre) knowledge goes.

Mandovi motors suggested a synthetic oil brand that is supposed to be made in Germany. Anyone know the brand name for that? Costs around 800 or so per litre.
