Ok so your current tyre size is 205/55/16 which has a sidewall of 112 mm.
215/55/16 has a sidewall of 119 mm, so will definitely make a noticeable difference in the ride quality.
195/60/16 has a sidewall of 117mm which is still better than your existing tyres.

I would avoid 195/65/16, it is too tall and will give you a big speedo error and may touch.
215/55/16 seems perfect, will look better as well.

Sorry if it's a noob question. Ride gets better with with the increase in profile or increase in width of an existing set up?

I've read somewhere that "Avoid bigger wheels if you want a smoother ride".

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

Thanks to all the BHPians for your inputs. Based on the valuable comments above, I think I must be going for 215/55/R16 for better ride quality.

Just attaching couple of data, if anyone could throw in some better suggestions, thanks in advance.

Larger wheels mean lower side profile which again leads to harsher ride. Larger side wall = cushioning is the ride quality.

Re: (185/70R14)?

I am looking to change the tyres on 'Swift VDi'. The existing tyres are of Michelin (185/70R14) profile. Looking out for decent tyres from domestic brands.

Please suggest!

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

Pls help guys!

Need to upgrade 5.5 year old stock tyres of Ciaz ZDi+ , run for any 55k kms.
Existing size - 195/55 R16

Not looking for more broad tyres, but just want to increase ground clearance. Also, should not face mileage drop and heavy steering.

Finally, it should not scrape when 3 adults and boot is full of luggage.

How about these -
195/60 R16
OR
205/60 R16
OR
195/65 R16

Not sure !

Go to http://tyrestore.in/Upsizing.htm and check which one you should go for by ensuring you do not cross the recommended error margin of less than 2%.

I already tried this, and got confused. None falls under 2%, so what should be best one just for ground clearance.

Closest one is 195/60 , for which one tyre dealer said that it would scrape on speedbreakers. 2 more dealers said that 195/60 is OK, but not the other two.

195/60 R16 - 3%
OR
205/60 R16 - 5%
OR
195/65 R16 - 6%

In that case, I would recommend do not go for a tyre upgrade.

Yes, for now I have ordered RogerAbs for suspension -

https://www.rogermotors.com/productdetail/rogerab-duo

Will get it installed and will then see the space available in wheel well before deciding on size.

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

I am looking for upgrading tyres of Micra cvt. Currently they are 175/60 R15. I am looking for 175/65 R15 or 185/60 R15. For slight increase in ground clearance. Which tyres are best? 175/65 R15 or 185/60 R15? Please suggest some good tyres for less road noise too.

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

I posted this in another thread, but it seems this thread is more appropriate, so posting here. Moderators may kindly delete the other post if necessary.

Dear fellow BHPians,

I had a small sidewall bulge in one of my tyres and I need to replace it. I have alloy wheels and a spare tyre with exact same size but with steel rim. The tyres are 36 months old but have done only 7000 kms. The tyres are 175/60R15

I have few questions:

1. I have not used the spare tire at all, would using it as regular tyre with alloy wheel a good idea? I plan to replace all tyres together after 4-5 years as I understand that you should replace tyres irrespective of kms because of change in rubber compound due to aging.

2. I will use the bulged tyre as spare. I have two roadside assistance subscription.

3. If indeed I have to change the tire, can I change the bulged tyre with one of the 185/60R15, 175/65R15, or 165/60R15? If yes, then which would be a better choice? This from pure financial consideration. There is only one manufacturer (Bridgestone) for my current 175/60R15, so cost is very high (6275/-), while other mentioned tyres are atleast 1500 Rs. cheaper a piece.

4. In longer term, I would like to switch to one of the three suggested tyre sizes because of competitive price and better availability.

It would be very helpful if you can provide some insight.

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

Hi team,

I am about to buy the Grand i10 Nios Turbo and I was reading on the Team bhp review (Hyundai Grand i10 Nios 1.0L Turbo Petrol : Official Review) that upgrading the tyre from the standard (175/60 R15) is a need and not want.

Quote:
the car's 175/60 MRF ZVTV tyres are too thin for the turbo-petrol (this flagship engine should have gotten 185 / 195 mm tyres). The car understeers easily if pushed, with the tyres giving up much earlier than the car does. Because of the thin tyre size & rubbish MRF ZVTV Ecotred budget rubber, getting the tyres to squeal is easy. BHPians should most definitely look at upsizing to 185 / 195 mm tyres from a superior brand; it's not a want, but a need.
I was thinking of upgrading the tyres as soon as I take delivery of the car.

I was wondering if the tyre upgrade prescribed in the review would be good or not. If yes, then which one to go for between 185 and 195?

Also, do tyre dealers accept these 'almost' brand new tyres and provide some exchange value?

Re: ARTICLE: Choosing The Right Set Of Tyres for your Car

Hi Everyone,

I could use some suggestions on which tyres to put on our Jeep Compass 4x4. The current Firestone tyres haven't run alot, but they've gotten punctured a bunch of times and the ride quality isn't great at all. I've been wanting to get rid of them since quite a long time and since I have a pretty long road trip coming up, thought its best to take the leap now.

From what I've found on other threads the Yokohama Earth-1s' are good. I'm looking for something that will improve the ride quality, I'm already happy with the handling so not looking for more grip. I also intend to take it off road once a month (though nothing too off roady due to the bad approach angle).

Any suggestions are welcome.
