Two reasons.

1) Engine, gearbox failures and poor crashworthiness are certain things we can not live with. The smaller niggles are irritations but not deal breakers.

2) The price. TBHP will be drooling over Kushaq if the top of the line 1.5 TSI with DSG and 6 airbags and a pano sunroof was offered for Rs 15 lacs ex showroom. Skoda will get lot of questions on DSG reliability as it is charging a premium for its product.

Today`s newspaper ran a two full page Ad on 7OO, it says price of 11.99 is EX Showroom - All India.



Bits and bolts are mostly local, should ensure good aftermarket availability as well as easy to offer a 7 year warranty.

Sorry the last line of logos got cropped, Sony and Mobileye was not mentioned but Visteon was there, perhaps certain components are through other suppliers.

Few differences -

1) Skoda DSG,EPC issues etc are a next set of horror show for the buyer, considering the car won't even move! Not to mention the cost of replacement is quite high as well. This in addition to general electrical failures which even the Superb and Octavia's have faced, or even small niggles where the LED DRL turns pale yellow for most Superb's over a passage of time. Mahindra's too have had niggles, but these imo aren't a deal breaker for most people and are much less severe to what a Skoda customer needs to get accustomed to.

2) Add to this the Skoda dealers are no less than Thugs waiting for such things to happen to simply loot the customers! Mahindra dealerships have been relatively better IMO. The cost of replacement is also way lesser than Skoda.

3) Price- 200 PS and 380NM, segment leading features by quite few miles, Great ride and handling balance and a size that can easily seat 5, and still pack in a massive luggage space. All this at a paltry 15L ex showroom! Not to forget the diesel option along with AWD! Kushaq would have been showered with similar praise, if Skoda hadn't given such a half hearted attempt.

IMHO Mahindra deserves all the praise everyone is showering on them. Sure there will be few niggles, but these can be overlooked as long as nothing serious as a EPC/gearbox malfunction doesn't happen.

Was wondering on how XUV700 or MG cars equipped with ADAS features be crash tested in comparison with cars which don't have such collision avoidance systems? Especially the technologies such as Auto Braking is one to look out for. A car that could auto brake once it sees the crash test block is already giving the car manufacturer an advantage over cars which don't come with them.

Though one answer could be that the base variants might not be equipped with such features, it is an interesting on how the NCAP regulators would go about evolving their rating systems to accommodate newer tests.
Also, a point to consider is whether the crash testing norms have cars which are started and functioning before they crash test or the car is just pulled to getting crashed.

Those features will be disabled before the crash testing as they prevent the car from getting crashed in to the block.

As far as I understand the Crash Tests, it's not that the cars are powered by their engine towards the Crash wall, they are propelled using a slingshot kind of mechanism at desired speed for uniformity, hence these crash avoidance systems of ADAS cannot prevent the car from the crashes. The car engine may remain on only for the airbags to function normally!

Just my take away on these crash tests and ADAS systems for new age vehicles.

Any updates on when the bookings start ? Have received 2 SMS from Mahindra in the last two weeks that somebody from the local dealership will call back soon but no calls whatsoever. The only call was from somebody at MM a month ago who wanted to know which fuel / no of seats / gearbox etc would I be interested in

Agree, that makes sense. Also the driver can't be present, so no question of someone driving it.

When it comes to Euro NCAP, the crash test is done without ADAS features in action since if they are enabled, they would not let the crash happen in the first place. Hence, the crash test is done with passive safety systems like Airbags and pretensioners enabled but not active safety features like ADAS. However, Euro NCAP evaluates these active safety features separately and awards points for the presence of these features as well as in some cases their effectiveness. Hence, while ADAS features would benefit towards a higher score, they arent a part of the crash test. But not sure of Global-NCAP, since they arent a regulatory body and I have no idea how things work there.

Interesting times ahead . Kudos to M&M and MG for raising the bar in the run for safest cars on Indian roads .
I wish the ADAS features be switched on and tested for its effectiveness too , indirectly raising the speed limit threshold of existing 65 km/h. The competition will surely have a big catch up ahead of them with ADAS being a clear differentiator ( provided they work in Indian driving conditions with numerous unexpected objects on road like dogs and other animals which spring out of nowhere )
