Re: Volkswagen Virtus Review

This is very interesting. I have started warming the engine so that the RPM is less than 2k before I start driving the car.. I had read somewhere that its a good practice to do so from the engine life/wear and tear perspective. Will be helpful to know more about this.

Re: Volkswagen Virtus Review

For those who are living in cities and that too apartment complexes, the distance/time it takes for the car to come out from the parking lot to the main road should anyway be decent warm up time for the car. One is most likely to be moving slowly with very reasonable engine loads during this period.

So the oldskool method of idling the car in the morning for atleast 30 seconds seems moot. VW suggests to start driving as soon as you start the engine if possible. This was very interesting to me! Ofcourse you have to drive gently and can't rev up straight out of the gate.
This is new for me. So our life was a lie this whole time? I always wait for RPM to drop to 900-1000 before starting my journey. What is everyone else doing after reading this?

For all cars driven, I start in about 20-30 seconds. I just start the vehicle, then belt up, check all warning lights, doors, mirrors etc (all these take max 15-20 seconds) and start off. Of course, I don't rev much until operating temperature has been reached, which is mostly taken care of once I am out of my society gate. I would say that running a gasoline engine at cold idle (read= rich running state) is like anyway wasting a lot of energy which modern cars can do without.

First full tank done and dusted

Completed my first full tank of petrol with 540km done and 50km left on distance-to-empty. Overall average is 12.4 kmpl with best being 18.2 kmpl on a steady cruise on the highway (both figures showing on the MID). Will calculate by the tankful-to-tankful method when I tank-up on IOCL XP95 tomorrow.

Very happy with the car so far. Hoping to complete the 1,000km checkup before I have to drive to Hyderabad in the coming week. Meanwhile, some amateur photography for your eyes:

The awesome feeling when you realise the car is pretty fuel efficient on open roads and smooth cruising. Usually in the city it's in single digits and these higher figures feel good!

Ordered these valve caps and then realised black ones are back in stock. So these might go to a friend with a red Polo

Re: Volkswagen Virtus Review

I have taken delivery of the Virtus GT plus DSG on 08 Apr24. A couple of observations on the first day. After refueling, I reduced the tyre pressure from 44 psi to 34. And a few minutes later the tyre pressure warning appeared on the display. I pulled over to the side of the road, checked the tyres and they appeared normal. Then I reset the tyre menu on the infotainment system. However I am yet to set the new threshold pressure settings Secondly, when I was stationary on a very gradual forward slope with hand brake engaged, but the auto gear setting not to parking the car rolled forward. I then put it to parking and it was stationary thereafter. Was not expecting it to happen. Thereafter had a relaxed cruise for about 50 km before calling it a day. I used to wonder about it in my Kushaq as well . Certainly appears as a glaring miss for a 20L car that does offer steering mounted controls.

But one day I serendipitous found out that scrolling the volume dial on the steering wheel down to zero not just mutes the sound but also pauses the playback. So one could argue the mute function is programmed into that volume dial on the steering wheel.

I am guessing its the same logic in the Virtus as well, albeit with buttons. Although, I would admit this is lot easier to do with a dial in the Kushaq/Slavia as compared to pressing the volume down button multiple times to get to zero. Or may be a long press of the volume down button would do it. Owners may be able to validate this.

If you press the volume scroll on the Slavia once, it mutes the sound & unmutes it on a consequent press

I'm sure a similar logic must be present in the Virtus as well.

Re: Volkswagen Virtus Review

Hello everyone, based on your experience, could you tell me when does the 1.0 TSI engine work at full potential? Mine has run slightly less than 6k and the power seems to taper off around 100 kmph, not that I'd go beyond that by much but could evidently notice this. I thought 5k odo run should be enough for engine to perform at its fullest.

Most comments I've read point towards the engine being fully run-in by 5 to 6000 km. Being a turbo engine you will have to be in the powerband to get acceleration. Are you in 6th gear at 100 kmph?

I was on D5, I checked to make sure I wasn't on D6. Or do we have to put the transmission in sport mode beyond 80 kmph (mine is AT)?

Mine is the manual 1.0 and even though I haven't crossed 1,000 km on odo, the car pulls strongly even in 6th. The character of the engine is such that if the revs are below 2,000 rpm there is some turbo lag, it's starts pulling post 2,000 rpm and gets pretty strong from 2,500 rpm onwards.

Yeah, could be the reason, didn't quite notice the RPM. But a query to AT drivers in particular, do you drive on "D" or "S" mode in highways to make those quick overtakes when the car is around 80 kmph or manual mode is better?

It's not the gear, it's the revs. Most autoboxes are tuned to shift up to the highest possible gear for fuel efficiency, and if you're cruising along, you're likely in a high-gear, low-revs scenario, esp. on a turbo petrol.

Give the gas pedal a little shove, it should kick down a couple gears, into the meat of the power band and sprint. S will be more responsive than D, but there's enough poke in both modes.

Re: Volkswagen Virtus Review

I so badly want to get a Taigun or Virtus DSG, but the lack of an electric parking brake (mainly) and a 360 camera (minor) are the only blockers. Sigh!
