Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

Hi,

I have a query regarding my 10 month old Fiat Punto 1.3 MJD Active!

I completed my 2nd free service (15K Kms) on 23/11/2014, and while checking out the manual a few days back, saw that the due date for next service (30K) is written as 24/4/2015 by the guys at FASS.

However, when I checked the service coupon, it mentions that the 3rd free service needs to be done at 30K Kms or 2 years from the date of purchase of the vehicle.

So, what should I go with? The due date given by the guys at FASS or wait for 30K kms before the next service?

It's 30K or 2 years from the date of purchase, whichever is earlier. I guess 24/4/2015 is the date on which you will complete 1 year of ownership (given that your car is now 10 months old). You do not now need to service the car on that date unless you complete 30K by that time.

However, since you completed your 15K service on 23/11/2014, you may want to check with the A.S.S if your next scheduled service should be on or before 23/11/2015 (i.e., 1 year from the last service).

Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

Has FIAT stopped calling customers for feedback after service ? I don't remember receiving any calls in the last 2 years or so .

Even the ASCs don't call up these days asking for a good rating ! I remember previously they used to call after every service urging me to rate them for 9 or above with FIAT. Now they just call and enquire if the car is running fine.

Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

Hi Guys, I came across this very helpful site 99rpm.com for FIAT spares. I know many people are already aware of this. I have one query regarding listing and component sharing between models. Since not all items are listed for all models can i use palio mjd filters for my Punto mjd?

Hi swiftnfurious,

Thanks. I have a swift petrol and it does 100 kmph at 2750 RPM in top gear. I hope this is normal and I also happened to drive my brother - in - laws hyundai verna 1.4 petrol which does 100 kmph at the same RPM in top gear.

Warm Regards,

Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

What's the average life of brake rotors ? I went to change my pads today at Vecto motors and the SA told me to replace the rotors. Car is at 78K. Rotors are smooth, however they have worn off mildly - probably 1-2mm on each side from what I can visually see.

I ignored my SAs advise and only changed my pads. Googling shows that rotors should last a lot longer. Why spend 3K on replacing the rotors unless needed ? I find this unnecessary replacement really frustrating with FIAT.

Also, the new pads are a bit spongy and lack bite compared to my older , I guess some time is needed for them to 'bed in' ?

Have you considered resurfacing the rotors on a lathe? You can shave off a couple of mm leaving an even surface and the rotors can be reused for at least another 20-30 k km depending on your driving style.

An FNG might charge 1000-1500 Rs for resurfacing the rotors and the labour charges associated with the work.

The wear-off is uniform throughout the entire surface of the rotor - I don't see any uneven wear. The entire surface has worn-off about 2mm from the edge of the rotor. So do I really need to replace or turn it on a lathe ? A uniform wear of 2mm+2mm = 4mm on both sides should leave enough thickness for the rotor to function properly.

I really don't have any problems - except that FASC asks me to change it everytime I visit them ! . They tell me that braking will be compromised and I find it hard to buy that argument.

Well, most service centers do say that. The try to fleece uninformed customers this way.

If braking performance is unaffected or if you don’t feel any juddering while braking, you don’t have to replace or resurface the rotors.

Do NOT worry! Petrol engines revv much higher (compared to diesel variants) for the same speed & gear combinations.

Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

Some good news for FIAT owners who don't want to visit the ASC .

99rpm website has started to sell FIAT spares again - all spares starting from oil, filters, brake pads , clutch are available.

Re: Fiat Grande Punto : Test Drive & Review

I visited Harish @Pride cars for a clutch hardness problems and he asked to me to get the driveshaft oil seals ( 1 for left, another for right, total =2 ) along with the clutch kit .

I couldn't find this part on 99rpm for the Punto MJD although I can see oil seals for other cars like the Indica Petrol. Also , is it necessary to change the oil seals with the clutch kit - I don't think there's any observed leak. Any pointers will be appreciated

How old is the car and what does the odometer read now?

Changing the oil seals will ensure the car is reliable even though you aren't noticing any leakages. No harm in getting them changed. Those oil seals shouldn't cost you much IIRC.

Car is 5.5 years old and the odo reading is at 79K. I'll enquire at FASC if they'll sell the seals OTC.
