It does indeed. The fine taper from top to bottom of the pillar shows the care taken in the stress calculation / dimensioning that went in to the fabrication process. Its massive section, detailed & precise machining (in the region of the lower hinges?) says a good deal about the bespoke quality of this marque at the time.

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

In the mean time, we are progressing with the surfacer application. Once we complete the surfacer, we will move the car to a paint booth for the final painting.

The black surfacer be applied, section by section

The Glasurit Surfacer is almost 4 times more expensive than any other surfacer. Matching the brand of surfacer and final paint is very important to get the best finish

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

A Question: Do we have the brown kind of paper and green tape that is used abroad while painting to mask the areas where paint should not fall. We use newspaper which i felt "leaks" colour onto the protected areas..Cheers

Green Tape - for grout/cement etc are available in Amazon India. So the other type should be available. Alibaba ans Amazon.com both ships this to India if you insist.

Brown paper - I believe the plastic coated/ with a sheen on oneside brown paper, which school kids use to cover their book will do exactly same and prevent leaching of paint.

I don't know if you've noticed good painters try to use those sheets of news paper where threr are glossy adverts or glossy/art (coated) paper (?) to mask the critical areas.

Green tape is thinner than the white masking tape we normally use, hence paint borders will be better merged.

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Yes, fine line masking tape and overspray masking sheets are available and will be used when we paint the car in the booth.

At this stage, the purpose of masking is primarily to protect the floorboards and wooden structural elements from any inadvertent spray, for which the ordinary tape is sufficient, since there is more than a few inches of gap between the wooden elements and the masking tape.

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

After the careful prep work the car finally moves for painting.

There was delayed as the road in-front of the Prep-Shop was dug up and we had to wait till the flat bed could safely navigate.

Finally on the way!

Thanks Karl for sharing this!

1993 M&M News Letter, Guestline Hotel. Guess what? The Daimler is featured in it! Cars from Hyderabad were also there. You can see the then silver Lasalle next to the Dodge, also from Hyderabad. DKG's Packard is next to the Lasalle

More updates on the painting

Masking does take a lot of time as extra care is being taken.

The finish. The white colour under the tube light looks different.

I cannot wait to see the paint work and get a sense of the car. My wife who is an artist in her own right is the one who chose the colour combination. I enjoyed the way she and Pankaj discussed the various combinations and finally firmed the mix.

Bulletboy has put his heart and soul in this project and finish is a reflection of this commitment. The prep for this paint job has taken many moons. Every dent or wave was tapped out, lines were constantly checked. The passionate man hours put into this work has been amazing

Guess, I am very fortunate to have Pankaj and Christopher in this restoration.

Post painting the car will move back to Chris's shop.

Cheers

Re: Daimler Tales - 1947 Daimler DB18 Luxury Saloon

We are going to chrome only the bumpers & hubcaps. Nothing else. The original chrome is in great shape and we as far as possible will be just polishing the same.

Thanks

Wow! Just saw the thread and read it in one go. Although I'm not a great vintage and classic fan, this thread kept me glued and now subscribed for future updates.

PS: get the chrome done at Allan's garage in Mumbai. Outstanding workmanship there.

Lovely! I suppose the paint still needs to be rubbed down.

Yes the paint has to be rubbed down. We will allow the paint to rest for a few days before we do a round of polish. Final polish to be done much later.
