Woman dies as MTC bus collides with car in Chennai | - Times of India https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/67091680.cms

The car looks bad, probably partly because it may have been ripped to get the occupants out. The passenger side door is opened.
Wonder about seat belts and speed, but no indication is given in the news item.
From the article it looks like a bus overtaking misjudgment.

Very sad. These bus drivers, particularly the private ones rushing about to maximize their passenger pickups, can be exceedingly dangerous.

About 2-years ago a private bus guy scraped along the passenger side of my car in B'lore.

When I pulled over to question him, a bunch (4-5) of ruffian looking weirdos barge out towards me and seemingly suffering from verbal diarrhea. Even a dialogue was impossible under those filthy conditions. I just took a snapshot of the situation and posted it to the B'lore police. Nothing happened as far as I can tell.

For our own safety and peace of mind, one has to be lot more defensive and anticipatory driving on our roads. Concept of right of way is ill-understood by many. The common misunderstanding seems to be "the bigger vehicle always has the right of way!"

If a new comer sees your video from mid-point onwards (not to get influenced by the 1st half) he will be more inclined to fault with the jazz for changing lanes due to the slowing truck in middle lane.

I just called over a co-worker and showed him the video from half point onward, he opined that the jazz was at fault.
But the Aspire seems not have braked at the right time.
The Jazz starts going into his lane at about 0:51 and starts braking at 0:53.

The Aspire doesn't brake till 0:56 and hits by the time the counter goes to 0:57. That's a decent amount of time to reduce speed. Reason why it wasn't done - who knows!

When buses overtake, it gives very little room for the car coming in the opposite lane to maneuver out of the way. Sometimes just braking itself is not enough. Bus drivers rarely calculate if they can safely overtake and get back onto their lane. They just expect that in the unfortunate event of someone coming in the opposite lane, the onus is on the car or bike to get out of their way.
A couple of videos showing bus / big vehicle drivers caring 2 hoots about oncoming traffic while overtaking.

A very common but extremely dangerous scenario is while approaching a vehicle1 in the opposite lane, a heavy vehicle2 (bus or truck that is behind vehicle1) suddenly decides to overtake vehicle1 and comes into your path suddenly.

Used to happen a lot on the Bangalore Tirupati stretch when road was divider-less leading to many accidents.

The only way to be safe is to take preventive measures by honking and flashing if you sense that the vehicle behind the approaching vehicle is going to act rash and come in your way. Flashing lights in this scenario is a good deterrent and keeps them in their lane.

A very common scene on the Hubli Dharwad bypass. Buses of all shapes and sizes overtaking slow moving trucks on a single carriageway.

One thing to always remember when they approach you from the wrong side is the overhang that is extremely dangerous and often miscalculated by the confronting traffic. A simple sway as they get back in lane after that overtake will require an additional 3 to 4 Ft more space than you would have thought. So better to be super careful with them.

Lorry carrying onions in Pune turns turtle. The people around queue up with bags and steal the onions rather than helping the driver.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

In a tragic incident, 6 people died in a multi-vehicle collision involving 2 government buses and a tourist van near Thirunelveli, Tamilnadu today early morning.

https://m.timesofindia.com/city/madu...w/67214654.cms

https://www.vikatan.com/news/tamilna...sons-died.html

Transliterating the Tamil news, the alleged conditions of the accident are as follows:
1. A government bus hit the median of a 4 lane highway trying to avoid a haphazardly driven tourist van allegedly driven by a sleepy driver.
2. Bus driver and van driver argue on the highway.
3. When they were about to start the vehicles after argument, another government bus, unable to see these 2 vehicles which were right in the middle of highway in a foggy + rainy weather, collided with both of them in high speed resulting in 4 dead on the spot and another 2 dead in hospital.

1. Pull over to a safe place and take a power nap/ sleep if you feel drowsy while driving.
2. If an accident takes place and the vehicles are in a mobile condition, park away from the road and shoulders. Do not argue in the middle of a highway (Duh!)
3. In foggy or rainy/ low visibility conditions, slow down and drive below such a speed that you can stop your vehicle comfortably within the distance of your maximum visibility.
A sad loss of 6 lives.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Here are some pictures which show a sequence of a minor accident (luckily) at TNagar, Chennai.

There was this Merc that wanted to turn left into an apartment complex. He did not have his left indicator on. However, he was proceeding in a manner that would make one believe that he was turning left. A biker was on his blind spot on the left when he had started to turn and by the time he was near the gate the biker had continued to ride through. The biker and car collided and the biker managed to jump off the bike unhurt. The car driver however turned his wheel to the right, probably an involuntary action.

Now, as I see it, the fault was with both parties. The car for not indicating his intentions to turn left and the biker to optimistically pass the car from the left on a narrow street which had vehicles parked on both sides with pedestrians as well.

Even if the biker had passed the car, it would have required a typical "squid" "S" maneuver to avoid the car that was parked a little ahead and avoid hitting my car. The biker wasn't wearing a helmet, which is a common sight in Chennai.
