Re: The mega "Road Updates" thread

Just back from a Gurgaon-Jaipur-Gurgaon trip.

NH8 is not worthy of being called a National Highway anymore. The highway is simply pathetic!

Imagine a NH having endless inter-crossings. Can you believe it, there are actually places where traffic is allowed to cross from the perpendicular roads. There are km-long jams because of this.

The situation is horrible near Manesar and Patuadi. At many places, flyover construction is going on and hence diversions. Less said about the road condition the better. The situation will get unimaginably worse when it rains as Haryana does not believe in storm-water drains/drainage systems.

NH8 between Delhi and Jaipur is bad for 60% of the length and unexpectedly good for the rest 40%. But you can't speed up as cyclists, cows and autorickshaws drive accordingly to their free will.

On the way back from Jaipur, we had to visit Abaneri so took NH11 till Dausa and then SH25. Both are quite good; both being tolled heavily.

SH25 (from Alwar - Bhiwadi) is very very good; the surface is freshly laid. However, road expansion is in progress so at many places, there are diversions. Also watch out for big stones on the road left behind by trucks.

From Bhiwadi, you join NH8 again for a final 45kms sprint to Gurgaon.

Although Gurgaon-Bhiwadi-Alwar-Jaipur (NH8-SH25-NH11) is around 70kms extra than Gurgaon-Jaipur (NH80), the roads are far better.

When we did this route last, there were a few tens of diversions all along the route. The drive was tiresome to say the least.

Really nice to know it has been completed, since we are planning a trip shortly.

The Cochin-Mangalore-Goa road conditions thread.

Plan to do the coastal drive from Kerala to Goa just after X'mas. The Kerala stretch is fairly decent, with a few bad patches in between. Any clue on the road conditions in coastal Karnataka?

Road from Honnavar to Margao is fairly good with some rough patches in between Gokarna-Ankola-Karwar. IMO avoid driving at night on this road if possible.

I am afraid, roads beyond Calicut upto Talappadi is really bad for sure. Even the recent patch up/ surfacing is far from satisfactory.

Re: The Cochin-Mangalore-Goa road conditions thread.

Instead of NH17 till Kuttipuram, you may want to consider 4L till Trichur and the Choondal road via Kecheri. Nh17 would be very crowded.

- Kochi-Kutiipuram route link
- Also as others says NH17 around Calicut all the way to Mangalore/Udupi/Baindur would be either very crowded or bad.

There were plans since last 2 years about constructing the road behind Chamundi hills, but Chamundi hills being a eco sensitive area there has been very little progress.

Expect a long and tiring drive. If at all you are doing it,then I would suggest as Ampere suggested:

Kochi-Thrissur via NH47.
Thrissur-Kozhikode-Kannur-Pumpwell Circle(Mangalore)-Udupi-Kundapur-Marvanthe-Bhatkal-Honnavar-Kumta-Ankola-Karwar-Madgaon-Panjim

The road is a misery after Kozhikode.Budget for a 8 hour drive between Kozhikode & Pumpwell.

Another 3 hours to Kundapur.Another 4 hours to Karwar and plus another 2-3hours to Panjim.

Overall I would strongly reccomend that you do the 1st night stopover at Mangalore.4 laning going on between Mangalore & Kundapur so diversions all over the place.Between Kasargod & Mangalore too road conditions are terrible(unless something drastic has changed in the last one month).

If you do not want to do the coastal drive, then the relaxed option is Kochi-Bangalore-Tumkur-Hubli-Ankola-Karwar-Goa.Excellent roads throughout and you would cover the distances fast as well.

Re: Mysore Ring Road, the lalitha Mahal Side..

Mysore ring road is very confusing.
Either you take the right or left turn from Colombia Asia hospitals as you drive from Banglore.
The markings are not clear and we tend to deviate from the ring road to the peripheral roads.
It is easier to go through the city than by Ring road.
Crossing Mysore we lose close to one hour for bypassing.
Last time when I crossed there was a marriage N.B.Kalyana madapa so lost about half an hour.
The second hurdle deviated towards Mahadevapura as the signage are not well marked.
As Malavalli Kollegal route is in good condition and less traffic and minimal speedbreakers
this route is a good option for people travelling to Gundulpet, Bannari and beyond.

Dadi
nasik-sangamner-nagar= good road,
nagar-ashti-jamkhed= good road,[ not recommended to travel during night]
jamkhed-patoda-manjarsumba= average lonely road[ not recommended to travel during night].
manjarsumba-neknor-kej-ambajogai= average road

after ambajogai, you have two routes onward nizamabad one via parli-loha-nanded, another via ahmadpur-shirur tajband-mukhed-narsi-biloli-nizamabad.
though ahmadpur route is shorter, its in bad shape.
parli-loha-nanded is in better shape but will add kilometers.

If you are looking purely NH222 from nagar to nanded via parbhani, i have no idea about current condition of the road.

Re: Nashik Ahmednagar Nanded Nizamabad road condition

Thanks Ashish,

Ambajogai may be rather long.
Would the NH 222 be shorter? I am hoping to get some info on that route.

Also any ideas on Nashik to Vapi?

Regards

Dadi

Vizag-Guntur -Kurnool- Bangalore Road Condition

Hi

I am planning to drive down from Vizag to Bangalore on 30-Dec-11. I am exploring routes other than Vizag-Guntur-Nellore-Tirupathi due to the severe cyclone storm and avoud heavy rains. The alternative route is through Vizag-Guntur-Atmakur-Kurnool- Bangalore.

Even though distance wise and 4 lane coverage is similar to NH5 route, I am bit wary to take the route as i am not aware of Guntur-Kurnool stretch and its condition. Do let me know if i can take this route and the time it takes.

MODS : I did not find another thread for this route. My regrets if this thread has been created unnecessarily and please merge it with another thread if

Re: Vizag-Guntur -Kurnool- Bangalore Road Condition

Suresh, If you are going via Kurnool just for the cyclonic system, then I would say its unnecessary. Go with the Naidupet, Chittoor route.

At present the system is east of Pondy and drifting further south, so it might be as damaging to south AP as it was originally predicted.
