Thank you for your inputs. The intention of coming the other route is cover more places while on the Nainital trip. If I had not read the other inputs on the thread, I would follow the same path while going up and coming down.

Thanks.

If you are planning to come back directly to Delhi, then other route does not offer anything, however, if you want to see bhimtal etc., on the way back, then coming back via Khatgodam route is good.
This kaladunghi route, which I have taken multiple times, is very scenic, and the road is awesome.

Thanks guys for these valuable inputs. I will be travelling to Nainital from Delhi tomorrow morning using the suggested route

Delhi - Hapur - Moradabad Bypass - Bazpur - Kaladunghi - Nainital.

Any good eateries on the way where good lunch can be had?

Regarding this Moradabad bypass, is it well labelled. Dont want to miss this? Is this the same thing which is labeled as old Moradabad bypass on google maps?

Thanks guys for the inputs. Thanks to advice here, took the Kaladunghi route using the left U-turn from Moradabad by-pass. As I have just travelled this route, wanted to update route info.

Road conditions: Most of the route, road conditions are wonderful, with few broken stretches. Part of the highway (NH-24), flyovers are being constructed to avoid the small towns on the way.

Eateries: There is a good place to eat called Skylark. This is at Garh Mukteshwar, which is before Gajraula, and perfect for breakfast.

After crossing Gajraula, there is a Mcdonalds (drive-thru) and Tadka, next to it (did not try this place). Apart from these, hardly anything else.

Did Delhi-->Nainital-->Ranikhet this weekend. Took Tanda-->Bazpur route for onward journey. This route has become a mess because of rains. I had to literally find road between potholes. Got stuck in a Jam for around 1 hour in Tanda. Took haldwani-->Rampur route while coming back which is better in my opinion. Rampur to Moradabad is bad but overall I would recommend this route for anyone doing this stretch in near future.

ntomer,

Which route is best for a late December drive from Delhi to Ranikhet :
i. through Tanda-Darhiyal-Bazpur-Kaladhungi-Kathgodam and on wards, or

ii. through Moradabad bypass- NH24-Moodha Pandey-RampurNH87-Bilaspur -Rudrapur-Pantnagar-Kathgodam and onwards?

Road condition and traffic are the two criteria here; I will stop for a tea cum snack break somewhere, may be at Haldwani.

Please advise.

Regards, drive safe

Hi,

I drove on the Moradabad-Kaladhungi stretch and it was in pathetic condition. Moradabad-Ramput-Rudrapur-Haldwani-Kathgodam is in relatively better state.

ntomer,

Ok. Is your experience very recent? I thought you had driven in August this year, during the peak of the monsoon onslaught?

Any indication that the roads have been re-surfaced afterwards?

I rather like the Bazpur route because of its scenic beauty.

Any advise on food stops & petrol pumps?

Regards,drive safe

@Issigonis,

Trust you have read this post from the first page of this very thread, it mentions an alternate route, BPCL fuel station and eateries on the way. Of course that info is old but trust that you will be getting updates.

I went to Corbett last week-end (4-5 Dec). The road between Moradabad and Kashipur were non-existent. We met a few tourists in Corbett, who were coming from Nainital; they told us that situation was similar on Moradabad-Kaladhungi stretch.

Re. the two routes that I had considered ( ref. post# 53 above), if the Moradabad -Tanda-Bazpur road (MDR 65W) is in bad shape,
and so is the third route which I have not considered,
i.e., Moradabad-Kashipur -Corbett-Mohan (NH121) and onwards,
that leaves me only my second route, which is
Moradabad -Rampur- Rudrapur-Pantnagar-Haldwani (NH87).

It will optimistic to expect the routes to be re-surfaced so soon.

I think the NH-87 is the safest bet.

@issigonis: What time are you planning to go? I will be driving down to Ranikhet early morning on the 25th Dec? Maybe we can exchange notes or move in a convoy if our dates match :-)
