Pune Kolhapur is good. Karwar Mangalore was good but because of the irn and manganese ore traffic, the only good stretch is Honavvar - Bhatkal stretch. Try Jog falls to Shimoga highway - less traffic, open road, hot mix, two-lane, you will be lucky to cross a bus or two in every ten km stretch (Really!). Sagar Shimoga stretch of 80 km took me around 40 minutes on my Bolero last month, and I probably crossed ten vehicles on the whole route.

The best road i have ever driven on is the Delhi - Manali route via Chandigarh. 60kms after Chandigarh starts the 200kms ghat section and the road surface and view is to die for.

when was this!! the last time I heard that route had more potholes than bangalore, coupled with landslides, narrow roads and manic bus drivers playing GTA from hell

For me, it has to be the Chennai - Hosur Road leading to bangalore. the best part is from poonamalee to hosur. 280 km can be covered in 2.5 hrs (with breaks for breakfast, beer & piss) easily without straining anything. my dream highway. thank you.

The Coimbatore Bypass: A superb stretch of road. Except having no dividers and the constant crossings.

Chennai-Pondicherry via East Coast Road: A lovely coastal stretch. At night beware of herds of cows sleeping only on the blind corners.

Chennai-Bangalore: Next on the cards not done it yet.

Munnar's Gap Road: Scary one lane stretch most often foggy and mist laden, while the entire time youre at the edge of a cliff.

GT (between Vizag and Vijayawada)

This stretch I think really good. A nice combination of scenic route + good surface.

Private volvo buses do an average of 70+ KMPH and peaks of 100-120 KMPH on this stretch.

1. Red Road.
2. AJC Bose Road Fly over.
3. EM ByPass - used to be good.

Bhalukphong (Arunachal) - Bomdi La (Arunachal) - Tawang (Arunachal).
The ghat road (courtesy BRO) from a little ahead of Bhalukphong all the way to Tawang is really something else (not going by road surface and quality here, but by drive quality.) And the funny road safety signs courtesy the BRO will keep you awake if the scenery doesn't.

With the others on Ooty-Masinagudi.

Anyone tried the Kotagiri-Ooty? 28 km of pure twisty smooth tarred heaven surrounded in tea estates and virgin jungle.

And on the other side of the scale, there is the Ooty-Mysore. Not seen another road that can be compared to it.

Hi All.
In Chennai i Vote for ECR the Road towards Mahabalipuram and Pondycherry... Although the Road is a Two way lane there are a lot of "S" bends and 1 will be able to drive in 90's over the bends which is a JOY
