The Arya Bhavan is usually open from 6 in the morning. Haven't visited them earlier than that. But I guess, the CCD in the same place should be open all night. The place is around 10kms before Vellore and 20 - 30 kms after the toll.

Oops! Sorry I thought 11AM and not 11PM. I think the only who would be open would dhabas or maybe a couple of coffee days.

Not 11PM, but I've started at 9:15 PM from Bangalore. You should see moderate to heavy traffic till Krishnagiri. At 11-1130PM CCD in Shoolagiri was open. Don't remember any other places open at that hour on the way. Anyways I made it home by 230 AM. Encountered some office bus and mild truck traffic from Sriperumbudur onwards. All this when I wasn't exceeding 105 the entire drive.

CCD, Shoolagiri [HP COCOO - LHS] and A2B, Chinnar before Krishnagiri toll plaza [BP COCOO - LHS] will be open. Arya Bhavan [HP COCOO] is located on the RHS after Pallikonda toll plaza, which will be closed.

More details on this in this link. Hopefully justice prevails and NHAI stops collecting toll till they repair the NH

Beyond Ranipet, its outright pathetic. Worst problem being, people think they can drive on the 4-lane only to be kept in check at the last moment seeing a barrage of broken sections. Many sections have also caved in. They need a big overhaul to a have a right to charge toll on this section.

re: Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries

I had a religious function to attend and was in a dilemma whether to go or not; after reading about arun_josie offer, i asked whether he could give me a seat. He welcomed me happily.

We started by 3 AM; reached near Anna University by 9 AM. This with speeds around 80-100 kmph.

As reported, the surface gets progressively uneven after Arcot. No craters that can damage suspension- but pot-holes large enough to awake sleeping passengers. If one is in a driving mood, and they have a fiat/ford, then they can enjoy dodging potholes.

This stretch on the NH is so bad that one can feel the vibrations in a Volvo multi axle.

If i am not wrong, then the air pressure on the Government bus must have made the difference. They might have inflated it to get maximum mileage resulting in poor ride quality.

Thanks ramzsys for giving company.

During the return journey, we took a break at Sai Sangeet for breakfast. Plan was to stop at Arya Bhavan but had to stop early for my kids.

Hence stopped at Sai Sangeet. Its immediately after the Walajapet toll on the left side. There is one more hotel as well just before SaiSangeet.

- Its a decent place
- It has a Sweeet shop as well
- Books/Tamil Cds available
- A donut shop opening shortly
- Options for lodging as well.

There are couple of stretches after ranipet, that doesn't deserve toll charges. Thanks to the bigger tires and better suspension which helped a lot to overcome this bad stretch.

More details in my owneship thread,

In fact while driving to Chennai the other Sai Sangeet is an ideal place to break too. I think its at Ambur. I could it has a nice open space in front to park. Also since one is out of the Hosur-Krishnagiri mess, it makes for a nice break point.

Should be Ranipet Star Briyani, if it is on your left after crossing the Walajapet toll from Chennai.
I too had done this stretch over the weekend for travelling to Vellore and recommend doing Chennai - Wallajah only during the daytime due to the roads. They are really bad. I also had to encounter pesky cabbies / chauffeurs who drive dangerously by dodging the potholes without using their RVM or using indicators to show their driving line.

Ok, then there are 3 hotels. After the Walajapet toll, first one is Star biriyani, then Aaryas and then SaiSangeet. Donut House will be opening shortly i guess.

Star Biriyani,

My guess is tyre pressure was OK. It is just that the stretch from Kanchipuram onwards is really pathetic in the true sense of the word.
