Dhanasekaran, srikanthpotluri, pypkmsrikanth, venki.bala,

Guys, do you know what will be the best places for food on the discussed route?
"Hyderabad-Kurnool-Cuddappah-Chittoor-Vellore"

I am ok with at least 1 good spot in Kurnool or Kadapa where i can eat and pack.

Also, any info on agitations? road blocks on this route?

Hey Nazim, remember we did the Guntur, Pidugralla, Macherla, NSD Hyderabad bit on 3rd of Jan. Never realised that the road was that bad.

Perhaps the bits after Karempudi towards Addanki are bad. The most popular route is to go to Narasaraopet and Chilakaluripet and get onto the NH 5 (GQ) at Chilakaluripet. If the Narsaraopet, Chilakaluripet roads are bad, the best is to go to Guntur and take the GQ from there.

I need to travel tonight from Chennai to Hyderabad. I see there are quite a few route options. Should I do the Chennai - Vijaywada - Hyd or Chennai - Tirupathi - Goothy - Kurnool - Hyd or any other route.

I want a fast non-stop drive with some decent Dhaba/Fuel station enroute.
Cheers

I would suggest only this -
Chennai - Chilakaluripet (on NH5), I saw a temple after which you need to take a left and go to Narasaraopet-Macherla-NSD-Hyd

Chilakaluripet-Macherla - you might do-80-90, rest of the stretch is fast.

Enjoy the trip

Latest Updates

I just did Chennai - Hyderabad last night. Started out from Chennai - Thirumangalam Junction at 5.30 PM and had a high speed (100-120 with an occasional burst to 140) almost non stop ( 2 bio breaks) run till the Aapno Ghar at BP just before Ongole reaching there are 9.45 PM (little less than 300 Kms). Left BP at 11.45 PM and carried on till Meddaremetla and taking a left turn there at 12.3xPM towards Addanki. The road from Addanki till piddugurella is bad with massive craters at lots of places. Even the places where there is black top, there are uneven humps across the surface making it very dangerous to drive in night. I stopped at Vinukonda intersection at 1.30 to catch a nap till 2.15 and then again slightly ahead from 3 to 4:15 and again from 5 to 5:30. Reached Narkatpalli at 7.30 am and then had a nonstop run till home at Punjagutta reaching at 10:15 am.

Distance covered :653 kms
Total Time: 17 Hours
Driving time:12.5 Hrs ( include Chennai evening and Hyd morning peak traffics)

I just did the Hyderabad - Chennai (we must have crossed each other, MileCruncher!) on 27th Jan.
Started at Hyderabad 09:30 and reached Chennai at midnight - 14.5 hours for a distance of 670km. It was a relaxed drive, not crossing 100, taking turns driving, resting diligently every 2 hours, etc.
Took the route most recommended in this thread : sagar-macherla-karempudi-narsaroapeta-chilakaluripeta-nellore-chennai.
Lunch at Nagarjunasagar, Dinner at Nellore.
The road netween Karempudi and Narsaraopet is not all that good but I guess this is the best available from all the opitions; besides the greenery in this section made up for the bad road!. Perhaps the detour through Piduguralla (+10kms) would be better.
I was happy to note my Vista Quadrajet completed the journey in just about a tank fill, averaging ~22kmpl.
I strongly suggest leaving Hyderabad early in the morning - straight one hour will be saved!

Guys,
I might be driving anytime this week from Hyderabad to Chennai.

From the recent comments, I am thinking to take this route:

Hyderabad - Ibramhimpatnam- Nagarjuna sagar - Macherla - Piduguralla - Narsaraopet - Chilakaluripet - Ongole - Chennai
(The idea is to skip Addanki) - As per MileCruncher, Piduguralla-Addanki is not so good.
(This also skips Karempudi-Piduguralla) - SKavuri says its not good at all.

Let me know if there are better options or need any changes.
The drive might be a non-stop except 2-3 small breaks. Is this also fit for a night drive?

Swordfish,
The route you chose is a good one.
I do not suggest FULL night driving - several stretches will be dark and with light traffic.
From Chilakaluripet, the highway is good for night driving also.
So make it a day-night match.

Mobile network coverage in the route

I am planning to drive from Chennai to Hyderabad this week end, will be taking the route suggested by the previous post (Chennai - Ongole - Sagar - Hyd). Planning to use my mobile GPS with Google maps. Just want to know whether the BSNL GPRS connection will be there through out the route.

Regards
Devakumar

I travelled from Chennai-Hyderabad 3weeks back. The road from Addanki to Piduguralla is bad in stretches with potholes. From Piduguralla I travelled upto Dachepalle then took Gurazala-Macherla route which is single road but surface is good.Sagar route is good upto Hyderabad.Thou I have not travelled through Pidugurala-Narasaraopet-Chilakaluripet this road seems to be a better option compared to Addanki-Piduguralla road.

I plan to do Hyderabad - Chennai coming Sunday. I don't know the local language but I can manage Hindi and Tamil. Is it advisable to go via Vijayawada as the roads are supposed to be good and no need to ask for directions(I guess) since its a four lane road all the way hence no need to take any detours.
