Regards,
I think Chattai is shut for the monsoons till November 1st week.

I would say, first night head to Om Beach, rent the rooms adjacent to the beach and relax (late night walks amidst the breezy winds is just amazing). Besides, this beach would be a lot less crowded than most of the others.

Mohit, send me your mail ID.

Hi Mohit,
I am also scheduled for a vacation in Goa during the 4th week of Sep (7 days), but am in two minds now due to the swine flu scare. So, if you finally go and once you are back, do update this thread as to what is the situation there and if everything is in normal condition. That would encourage a lot of people here to go to Goa.

hi, let me confirm that Swine flu in Goa is not in the proportions that is present in Bangalore and Pune, Lucky not to have any deaths so far. yea about 15 people have been detected, but nothing to worry about.
and if you are planning to drive down then rest assured that the Mangalore Goa road via Karwar is totally washed off, u need a gud SUV to traverse this road, secondly you can drive down od the GQ till Belgaum and take the Belgaum Amboli Sawantwadi Mapusa Panjim Road, that should be OK.

Swine flu or any other flu, I am going to goa.
Now coming to the route. Looks like NH17 between Gokarna and Palolem is bad. Can someone please confirm?
What alternative route I can take from mysore?

While returning I was planing to take NH4A and NH4.

Regards,
Mohit

IIRC, the route from Gokarna-Karwar-Goa was in good shape when I visited around 3 months back, except for the bad section near Karwar beach and the occasional potholes.

That was what I was told. But today someone told me that due to heavy rains in the last month, murdeshwar-karwar-goa route has been completely washed off.

Need to confirm this.

amohit,

The best route for the Goa is undoubtedly

Bangalore-tumkur-chitradurga-davangere-ranebunnur-hubli-ankola-karwar-panjim
Time required - 10 hours to 11 hours ( comfortable speed 100 to 130)
Pros:
Flat road till hubli.
Road is in very good condition, its straight, four lane
Can take a halt at hubli ( i can suggest good place to stay)
Ghat region between hubli to ankola is not steep. All buses take this route

cons:
Lot of toll booths means more money to pay
stretch between chitradurga to ranebennur is under construction. But 80 kmh is defnitely on the cards.
If you are driving in the night, Lot of mining trucks ply between bellary to karwar port, which means they enter near hubli and go towards karwar. Driving at night from hubli to karwar will be horrible with trucks in the front and back.

Alternatively,

Bangalore-tumkur-tiptur-bhadravathi-shimoga-sagar-honnavar-ankola-karwar-goa
Time required - ~ 13 hours ( comfortable driving again )

Pros:
You get to see JOG FALLS which is a huge +
The route is scenary. Fun to drive ( between shimoga -sagar-honnavar)
Gokarna comes in between honnavar and ankola.

Cons:
Tumkur to tiptur to bhadravati is in very bad shape.
Near bhadravathi, there is absolutely no road for about 10 kms.
sagar-gerusoppa-honnavar is a tough road to do. The road quality is very good. But lot of curves and steepy. It will take a lot of time to do this.
Honnavar to ankola is NH17. I do know why is it called NH but its a nightmare to drive here. I could manage only 50 - 60 with occasion huge potholes which will require to steer from right to left.

Bangalore-tumkur-chitradurga-davangere-ranebunnur-hubli-dharwad-lonawala-ponda-panjim

This is the shortest route but best to be avoided. Road is in pathetic condition.

Having said the above, since its rainy season, the road through the hills is best to be avoided. Make sure you get out of the city to nelmangala in off peak traffic timings. Else, it will put you off.

Dude, all you need to worry is, how good any road is upto Karwar. Karwar to goa is the route you are bound to take. No options.

I think its the section between Mangalore-Udupi-Honnavar that is in bad shape. The roads till Gokarna were pretty recently laid IIRC. I don't think you should have a problem unless you are taking the complete west coast route.

Done this two weeks ago. total trip is very very scenic. get off HN4 at Kittur then 12 km to Khanapur is not too good. After which it is a lovely rd to Londa. only 12-14 km of VERY bad road between Londa and KA GA border. Ghat is OKish with a few potholes. (BTW lonawala is not anywhere on this route. It is a town Khanapur.)
