Thanks Star.
I meant, I am waiting for updates on the remaining stretch from the other bhpians so that I may plan my journey and not be worried about the roads since I will be traveling in a semi vintage car (1985 model)
Sorry abt the confusion

Hi Thanks for the update. but tell me, there is a bypass to go to c'durga NH4, but havn't seen one for shimoga. Last time I had driven Goa Bangy, I had to traverse the entire Tumkur town to reach NH4 to go to bangy. If there is a bypass do enlighten us.

Well i have already book for an overnight stay in hubli so will have to take the Bangalore - sira - c'durga - davangere - haveri - hubli section only. So we have very bad sections between c'durga & haveri? How bad is bad?

Even I am planning to go to Goa either in my 118NE or my Padmini. I dont mind if the route is 100-200kms more but I need to know what is the best route with the best possible road. I too am confused with all the discussions in this thread with so many pages.

People who frequently travel in parts of this route: Are they sufficient garages around towns in case of a breakdown?

guys your opinion on the following route (to enjoy good roads and yet not take too long. just looking at ways to avoid the chitradurga - haveri route which i heard is horrible for car drive).

Bangalore-tumkur-sira-chitradurga-bhadravati-shimoga-sagar-yellapur-ankola-karwar-south goa (663kms)

Heard the ankola-karwar stretch is pretty bad. How about yellapur to karwar via kaiga (SH6)?

To enjoy scenary take Shimoga route. The route you planned is good one too. I had planned many times to take that route but didn't take at the end. Try that route since in other thread its mentioned road between chitradurga-shimoga is good. You can cover speed between tumkur and chitradurga best 4 lane road in Karnataka.

From Shimoga you can try that route via yellapur since road is in good condition. Road around Ankola-Karwar is in bad shape but not too bad. but I feel it would be more than 663km to Panaji, around 700km.

So best bet is: Bangalore-Shimoga-Honnavar-Karwar-Goa or Bangalore-Chitradurga-Hubli-Goa. here Hubli-Goa has many options.

Ravi.

Hi Ravi

thanks for your input.
my reason for suggesting that route is to get the best possible route, 663kms is from maps.google.com

Heard the ankola-karwar stretch is pretty bad. How about yellapur to karwar via kaiga (SH6)?

@Ravibhat: I am sure "Bangalore-Shimoga-Honnavar-Karwar-Goa" would be very scenic and personally would prefer it as I would get a chance to see Jog Falls. Considering that I would be driving an old car, which of the above 2 routes is better? I mean in general, which route has more towns (hoping each has a mechanic)

More mechs will be seen in the bangalore-hubli-goa sector since most of the towns on this route are big.

Anyone has any ideas about the route from Hubli to goa

Hubli - dharwad - khanapur - molem national park (connect with nh4a) - rabinder - candolim.

The Londa-Molem stetch is just not fit for any kind of driving.A warning has already been sounded out on this thread earlier. You are sure to come out with bent rims and broken axles if you do risk taking this route. The NH4A has vanished between Londa-Anmod-Molem thanx to the manganese ore trucks.I took 5hours to cover a distance of 140kms.This would easily rank among the top 5 worst & scary roads in India. For kilometers on,you would only see craeters and holes with no sign of anything called as road.

So please dont be fool hardy and take this route.Go through Karwar in case you are heading out to South or take the Hubli-Belgaum(via NH4)-Amboli-S'wadi stretch in case you are heading off to North.Again Belgaum-Amboli preferably do the stretch before sunset as the ghat roads tend to get lonely after sun down.

This route will be quite longer, take this route only IF you want to visit Chitradurga, else take the below route, it's very scenic too.
BLR-TUMKUR-TIPTUR-TARIKERE-BHADRAVATHI-SHIMOGA-JOG-HONNAVAR-ANKOLA-KARWAR-GOA.

Hi Sushrutha,

my only reason of going via chirtradurga is to utilise the NH4 and save time.
I am not sure the condition of tumkur-tiptur-tarikere route hence suggested the other one.
Additionally, the stretch between ankola-karwar is apparently very bad. Can anyone throw light on SH6 yellapur to karwar via Kaiga??

But I don't think you can save time by going to Chitradurga and coming back to Bhadravathi.
Tumkur - Tiptur - Tarikere stretch is good , but be careful abt the sudden humps.

Ankola - Karwar stretch is not too bad, don't worry. Near Ankola there is some 5km bad road and after that there is some 10km bad road. Nothing to worry about. Its good that highway authority is filling at least rocks/soil as repair work. Hats off to central government lol
