Re: Coorg recommendations

Coorg appears to be a nice, cool place to relax for a few days. Hope I will be able go there in the near future, may be after the elections.

Thanks to all the folks for their lovely, very informative posts.

Re: Coorg recommendations

Hi Guys,
Wanted to travel to Coorg with family next weekend on a 4 day tour. Kindly suggest me places I can visit in Coorg and surrounding for kids and adults. I wanted to visit glass bridge and star gazing night show. Apart from this, how can we plan
to visit other places?
Also pls suggest budget friendly stay options.

Thanks,
Ramki

Explore Kaveri Nisargadhama. It's peaceful and enjoyable, provided there aren't any unruly tourists.

For a Coracle ride and a chance to observe elephants up close, Dubare Elephant Camp is a great option. Be wary of crowds, especially on weekends, and be sure to check the operating hours in advance.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to visit the Golden Temple in Kushalnagar.

Head to Fish Lake for a relaxing time feeding the fish and lounging on the benches. While you're there, indulge in a meal at Tibet Kitchen, conveniently located nearby (use the provided link for the best option).
There are multiple iterations with similar names. Use the link above to go to the right one.

As for Harangi Dam, it's uncertain how it fares currently with potentially low water levels, but there's still a garden to explore if you're interested.

Re: Coorg recommendations

Hi all,

I'll be traveling from Mumbai to Coorg in the next month. Will be staying at the Coorg Marriot Resort and Spa which is near Madikeri.

I have the option of flying either to Bangalore or Mangalore, and will be hiring a local taxi from there.

Would greatly appreciate any recommendations on whether it would be better to book my flight to Bangalore, or Mangalore?

The difference is between a 3.5hr Ride from Mangalore and a 5.5hr Ride from Bangalore. The roads from Mangalore barring a few patches of rough owing to road widening work is fairly good.
The only issue being that there’s no Ola or Uber in Mangalore and you’ll be at the mercy of the taxi operators in the Airport.
They do have a taxi booking counter at the airport though.
In case you plan to take this route and need to book a taxi beforehand I can offer some contacts. You can negotiate the price in advance.

Alternatively, you can ask your hotel to arrange for a car.

Re: Coorg recommendations

Planning a drive to Coorg next weekend, how are the road conditions now?

Also looking at Aurika, does someone have experience with stay there vs Coorg wilderness resort?

Re: Coorg recommendations

Reaching out to the forum members to check on road conditions and safety during this rainy season. Will be travelling to a small town called Ammathi from Bangalore during the Independence Day time. How safe is it to travel? Should we travel in car or taking a bus is better option?

Thanks in advance

Roads were overall in great condition till 2 weeks ago when we went to Polibetta. Just be mindful of sudden potholes and speedbreakers on the Mysore - Gonikoppal stretch and sudden pools of water. Further, be careful of speed checks and/or sudden slow moving traffic on the Mysore ORR.

Also suggest don't trust Google Maps (or any others) blindly. We were routed onto a shortcut near Polibettta which turned out to be a potholed single lane road, with local Mahindra pick-ups and shuttle autos coming head on. Was forced to get onto the verge multiple times very very gingerly. Later realized that it was quicker and much safer on the highway even though 4 km more. Net net, stick to the main roads!

Re: Coorg recommendations

Folks, will Coorg be crowded next week from 30-Oct through 3-Nov (Diwali week) with a lot of folks from Bengaluru and Mysuru flocking to the place?

What about catching a flight to Mysore and a taxi ride to Coorg? I understand that it is a 2.5 hour drive. Much shorter than the other two options.

Most likely yes
Half of Bangalore lands up in any place in a 300km radius during long weekends
you can check however from booking sites

Crowded will be an understatement. During the previous long weekend, which ended on 13th Oct, I had the misfortune of crossing madikeri, where I was stuck in a traffic jam for 40 min. Thankfully I was stuck in the shorter Q as I was headed down sampaje but the Q of cars that were headed up from sampaje side, into madikeri, was about 4-5kms long and it would have taken at least 75-90 min to cross madikeri.
I would definitely recommend not going to coorg, chikkamagaluru etc during long weekends. You invariably get stuck in long jams because there are no alternate routes to bypass towns OR tourist hotspots.

Re: Coorg recommendations

I will be travelling to coorg from Bengaluru this Wednesday and want to carry alcohol. Will there be any check posts which will check and confiscate it. Eventhough I am not crossing the state border am skeptical as it is tourist spot. My stay is not in the main town but in the isolated part near forest so not sure if I can get at any nearby places.

I have never had any problem. If not opened you are not breaking any rules.

It is not a problem except during the time of elections or election counting, have carried it many times with no problems at all
