I have travelled a couple of times between Pune to Nagpur and every time followed the below route :

Pune-Aurangabad-Jalna-Sindhkhed Raja-Mehkar-Karanja-Pulgaon-Wardha-Nagpur

I found the roads to be good between Jalna and Nagpur with minimal traffic in this route. Only issue is - this route is 2 laned and there are very few places to eat. This is an issue especially when you are travelling with family.

Hence, this time I plan to go via Amravati - Akola (Pune - Aurangabad - Jalna - Khamgaon - Amravati - Akola - Nagpur)

Heard this entire stretch is 4 laned? Whats your final feedback on this route? or should I stick to the one I have been taking?

Any other better and faster route you would like to suggest?

Travelled on the Khamgaon-Akola-Amravati-Nagpur section of NH-06 in end Aug while going from Surat to Nagpur, and only Amravati - Nagpur section is four laned. Rest is still two lane, though each town has bypass. Expect reasonably heavy truck traffic on this route.

What's faster route to reach Akola from Pune?

Is it better to take 4-lane road till Jalna & then take Sindhkhed Raja-Mehkar route to reach Akola OR take detour at Ahmednagar for NH 222 to reach Jalna & then Akola?

To go to Nagpur, no point in joining NH6 at Akola, better to join it before Amravati via Jalna, Mehekar, Malegaon & Karanja.

Roads are good, except that there are some rough sections between Sultanpur & Malegaon.

I had travelled to Akola over the weekend. At Jalna, didnt realise , I am taking the Sindkhed Raja -> Mehekar -> Malegaon-> Patur -> Akola stretch. A patch of road ahead of Sindkhed raja is bad but all the way till Akola is excellent. Two lane road, with less traffic, but no options for food.

On the way back, took Khamgaon - Chikli- Jalna stretch. Khamgaon Chikhli stretch is not good.Very uneven surface. Chikli - Jalna -- Road is good


IMO, people travelling to Akola should take the Sindkhed Raja - Mehekar stretch.

Recently traveled this route -

Pune - Aurangabad - Jalna - Mehkar - Karanja - Wardha - Nagpur

- Pune to Aurangabad is nice and took just 4 hours.
- Aurangabad to Karanja is just an old school kinda highway which but an average speed of 65km/h can be maintained.
- Karanja to Wardha is ok with few really painful stretches lasting 20-30kms
- Wardha to Nagpur is again terrible

Better avoid the Wardha route and take the Amravati highway.

For me it took 13 hours for Pune - Nagpur with 1st stop near Mehkar and 2nd near Wardha.

Nagpur - Amravati - Excellent four lane

Amravati - Mehkar - Good two laned and 90 - 100 km/h can be maintained

Mehkar to Aurangabad - The worst!! (Large craters between Jalna and Aurangabad)

Aurangabad - Ahmednagar - Road aren't flat and heavy traffic but four laned

Ahmednagar - Good roads with average traffic

Time Taken - 13 Hours

Vehicle - i20 CRDI

Stops - Karanja, Jalna and Ahmednagar

I do not understand for what kind of roads these people collect tolls.

They should be ashamed of collecting tolls for such pathetic roads in Maharashtra!

Last time i traveled on this route, the Jalna by-pass was in terrible condition.
