Re: Monsoons - Road Condition Update

The Pune - Shirdi road via Ahmednagar is in above average condition.
The last 1 hour before reaching Shirdi is bad however.
I had gone by bus since I was not sure of the road conditions.
Bus took 3 hours to reach Shirdi from Viman Nagar, Pune since it was night drive. Return journey took approximate 4.5 hours due to traffic.
Cost: Rs. 400 from Pune to Shirdi via Konduskar AC Volvo. Return fare via Konduskar AC Mercedes was Rs. 250.

Re: Monsoons - Road Condition Update

I will be in Kabini this week. From there, I will be driving to Palakkad. Considering the road conditions, what will be the best route to Palakkad?

Re: Monsoons - Road Condition Update

I visited Mahabaleshwar on 20/09/11. Went via mumbai pune expressway on to wai-panchagani-mahabaleshwar. Roads were too good. Then made the mistake while coming back from Mahad as I wanted my daughter to see the scenic route but the ghat was a horror story, the last 20 kms of the ghat drove at 10 Km and after that another horror story from Wadkal Naka to Panvel. I have been to mahabaleshwar on this very scenic route since 1980 but have not come across such horrible roads in the last 31 years. This means the road contractors are not at all serious about the maintainence. Just Do not take the Mahad Route for Mahabaleshwar. It is an absolute horror story.Take care.

Route is bad and potholed.Go via NH63 from Hubli (Yellapur-Ankola-Karwar-Panjim).Road is excellent and shouldnot take you more than 4-5hours from Hubli.

The other option is go via Amboli, but nh17 around sawantwadi has been reported to be bad as well.

Direct route would be via Koduvally, however I would suggest that you take Kabini-Batheri-Vazhikadavu-Nilambur-Kalikavu-Melattoor-Bhimanad-Manarkad-Palakkad.Might increase your distance by arnd 15kms,but its an easier drive as opposed to the Vythiri-Thamarasserry route which is heavily potholed and traffic prone.

Via this route it should take you around 6hours to reach Palakkad.

Wish I had posted my query much earlier . I followed the Kalpetta, Thamaraserry, mukkam areekode, mannarkode route, which took 8 hours ( including several breaks, stopping for directions, couple of detours, bad roads etc.) The Google map insist that we can cover it in 4 hours 6 mins

Re: Monsoons - Road Condition Update

Just did Pune - Dapoli - Pune drive.
While going took the Pune -> Kapurhol -> Bhor -> Varandha -> Khed -> Dapoli road. The road is scenic but extremly narrow in the Varandha ghat region, I would not recommend this road if you are travelling in a hatchback/Sedan.
While coming back, I did Dapoli -> Mandangad -> Ambet -> Mangaon -> Tamhini -> Paud -> PUne road. The road in Ratnagiri and Raigad district is in horrble condition. Especially, from Mangaon to Tamhini the road is in pathetic condtion, should be avoided if you love your car.

All in all I think travelling to Dapoli from Pune can be avoided, or should done in a rented vehicle

One sweet spot though if you cannot avoid taking this road, try having food at Hotel Anand Bhuvan in Mangaon just near ST stand. Really good food.

Mumbai - Vapi Update, 26th Oct 2011

Very very good almost throughout.

The road to Silvassa though is spoilt for around 3 km post forking off the highway.

Re: Monsoons - Road Condition Update

Did a Pune -> North Goa--> South Goa (Colva)-> Kolhapur ->Panhala ->Pune trip from 22 October to 26 October.

I have posted the Goa route specific update in the other thread hence not posting it here again.
Kolhapur city roads are in bad condition.
However, Kolhapur --> Panhala roads are in very good condition. It is a pleasure to drive on that route.
Roads within Goa are also in very good condition (less corruption?), though they are narrow and with numerous speed breakers thrown in.

1. The road condition - Moderate , few bad stretches post ahmednagar
2. Estimated travel time - 2.5 hrs ( average driving @ 80-100 )
3. Mc D or CCD outlets on the route - Cant remember any

Dont take the Ahmednagar bypass ( lot of truck pile ups ) instead go through the heart of the city , pretty fast
