Yeah - The Kukke - Kadaba - Uppinangadi route is good. Did that circuit last week. It was a very good drive.
Better than the Kukke - Gundya stretch WRT road condition; scenery continues to be good

I have done part of this route. I have mentioned this route in the below link. Back then, it was not complete and we were told only jeeps could complete it. So, we went upto where the tar road ended and came back.

Yes, we had a good trip. Will put up a travelogue soon.

It was not raining at all. Not even a drop. And all the places were hot and dusty as if it was in summer. Western ghats is so charming with dark clouds, mist, rains, lush green, water falls in every bend, slippery roads etc., - could have none of it, unfortunately.

I had not seen your travelogue. Otherwise I'd have tried it as I was on my bike this time. From what I heard from locals, the road seemed to be tarred completely, except for 2kms. Waiting for some BHPian to confirm.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Dear Friends,

Need help; I have to visit one of my close relative who got admitted in KMC Mangalore (Jyoti Circle) on this Sunday. Since I am going alone, planning to do it by Bus. I have few questions, if I have to reach Mangalore by 05:30-6am in the morning what time I should board the bus in Bangalore? Which is the most prefered Bus operator? KSRTC?

I need to come back on the same day by noon, is there any service available?

I know this will be little OT for the discussion here, but still expecting some advice.

Thanks
Rajesh

There are not too many buses in the daytime. So please check out. At one time there used to be none.

There is no way that you come back the same day by noon unless you take a flight !

KSRTC has day Volvo buses which take atleast 7 hours to reach bangalore .

About reaching mangalore early morning , you can take KSRTC volvo buses from Majestic .

There are atleast 200 buses running between Bangalore and Mangalore on any given day . The frequency of day buses might be lesser though ,

Looks good. Not sure about the SH37 part on no. 3 though - you might want to check with some of the regulars on this route about the best option for Karkala-Udupi (via Hiriadka or Moodubelle). Samurai San??

I'd recommend that you stick to (b) given that it will cost you only 5 extra km but the road will be definitely better than (a) and you will end up taking lesser time

Good roads most of the way - no issues with a Maruti at all.

Why don't you try Bisle Ghat if you are in for some adventure?

I was roaming around Western Ghats last week and I know exactly what you mean. It was really sad to see that kind of weather at this time of the year :( Signs of not so good things to come...

Check the ksrtc website-the link has been provided by speedsatya!!Yes they have better and on-time service when compared to private operators.

There is a bus which you can catch in the afternoon via Shiradi. It reaches Bangalore around 11pm

Was it just a one-off pothole you missed to see or is the road full of them ?

Any good eateries on the way ?

It would be a great training in off-roading. I took close to 1.5hrs for the Bisle-Kukke stretch in my 500cc bull, last Friday (and Sakleshpur-Bisle is also pretty bad). I'm pasting two pictures, the first one is how some 20-30% of the roads are and the second one perhaps is how the best stretch looks, so that one would get an idea of the kind of adventure one can expect.

Check VRL. I think they have a bus from Manipal at 13:00 to Hyderabad via Bangalore. It may reach Mangalore by 14:30-15:00. Cost of a seat from Manipal is roughly 1000INR.

Oops, a mistake, Manipal to Bangalore is 500INR and Manipal to Hyderabad is 1000INR.

Replying from the iPhone app, so dunno how to quote. Apologies.

I am looking at some driving that I can enjoy. I am not looking at torture. So Bisle Ghat is ruled out . We had been through this road in the lancer and it took us ages to get out of it. This was sometime in 2007. And I know the condition has never improved.

On the pothole that I hit , it was just a lapse in concentration. I had the whole road to avoid it. Entirely my fault.

Two more options you might want to consider:

1. Bangalore-Mysore-Bhagamandala-Kanhangad-Mangalore
2. Bangalore-Mysore-Madikeri-Sullia-Kasargod-Mangalore

(Mysore-Bhagamandala itself can be done either via standard Madikeri route or via Virajpete)

All options are strictly if you are absolutely bored of others and want to see some different scenery. I've done #2 and #1 upto Kanhangad an year ago and the roads were good.

My 2 cents.
