Most guys apart, I would say re-look at Ford Fiesta.

- Has a feature list that you need
- Excellent Handling for highway drives.
- Very good suspensions
- Not a stonking but a brilliant new age diesel engine that would return very good FE
- Minimal lag, would give a good ride in the city too.
- In others words a perfect all rounder.
- Only negative is the rear seat space. If thats not a concern, you should look at it.

Now as regards to after sales, Ford thanks to Figo has pretty decent network and is much better than the ones you named in the post.
To summarize, I would say, do consider the Fiesta. It has every thing you need. It may not be a car for the masses, but if you know your needs, its a brilliant package.

Re: Which Diesel car for ~10 Lakh? Vento vs Verna vs Rapid vs Fiesta vs Linea vs Othe

Vento in city conditions will surely give you between 14-18 depending on the way you drive and average driving conditions. In case of traffic jams with A/C on still Vento will give you better mileage than verna neck to neck. You can check that!

Highway driving is subjective to your average speeds you maintain, and the driving style etc but I can confirm that 19/20 has been the average most users are getting today assuming a mix and match of low and high speeds in the full journey.

You can read through the autocar and team-bhp experts review available on internet for both cars but essentially verna inspite of being much more beautiful and smashing styling is more like a city car than a tough reliable highway rider.

Few links for you -
http://www.autocarindia.com/Review/2...a,verdict.aspx

FYI - There was a recent mileage rally(within city 37 kms) conducted in pune by a VW dealer two weeks back for the real car users and just to share few numbers for your information - VW polo and vento both clocked 30+ and that was even more than ARIA claimed numbers. This is not at all an overheard or, hyped statistics as I myself have been able to reach 34 couple of times driving on Pune-Mumbai expressway at 80 kmph(fixed).

As you will be using this car a lot on highways - hence my strong recommendation is to stick to vento TDI being the better bet. Still if you admire Verna styling more, then go for it..

@Ampere : Any idea about the servicing and maintenance cost of the Fiesta. I heard that Ford maintenance is costly compared to the others.

@Sommos,

It would be on the higher side. But its as comparable to the others on the list. (Veno/Rapid/Verna etc). I dont have a quantitative idea per se. Do check with MAS on his ownership.

Re: Which Diesel car for ~10 Lakh? Vento vs Verna vs Rapid vs Fiesta vs Linea vs Othe

FE is dependent on lot of factors and not just the car engine so for the same car you could just get 18 in city drive average conditions but could also get 13 if the traffic is just dead slow on the same road. On the same highway and driving conditions, if there is heavy traffic and you have to apply frequent brakes then FE will reduce slightly.

What's important here is to pick up the engine option that suits your needs based on where you will be driving, service network and your driving capabilities will definately matter. Diesel engines with good torque and a balanced steering control gives you flexibility to downshift gears less often hence offer better FE.

I agree with @ampere that Fiesta is another good option which has an excellent blend of engine power, FE and steering control with descent torque. It is also an excellent package if you like its driving asthetics.

If you have narrowed down your choices to Verna and Vento, then forget everything.
Pick Vento

Vento is classy, Powerful, better handler on road, and has better build quality than Verna.

I drive a Vento since 6 months.

My usual driving style, gives me a mileage of 14 to 15km/l in City and around 19km/l in highway.

Last 2 months, I have changed my regular driving style and started driving the car in a much softer and controlled manner without pushing the engine much.

The maximum mileage that I achieved in City driving condition is 17km/l.
In addition, driving in highway without crossing 110KM/h, and without hitting higher RPM, the maximum mileage that I got is 24km/l (But I do not have that patience to do this often )

Since you have already brought it down to two, the following comparision of a fellow member may help you :

Vento - Slightly noisy and gruff with Minimal turbolag (105PS@4400RPM / 250Nm@1500-2500RPM )

Transmission :

Verna - Manual six speed - Very smooth and sure slotting
Vento - Manual Five Speed - Sure slotting but not as smooth

Ride and Handling:

If you can get used the extremely light steering of Verna, you could make the car handle slightly better. I drove on Mysore road (towards Kengeri)at 100 Kmph in a Verna. This is a usual road which I take in my Punto. On this road there are a few curves( near Kengeri NICE junction for Ex.) which can tell you how a car would handle. The Verna behaved perfectly fine. The body roll was completely controlled. Much akin to Punto. Similarly there are a few large humps and on these the Verna did not bottom out, even after taking the hump at 40 Kmph. The car did not feel wallowy either.

When driving a Vento on the same road, I felt it was slightly better composed than the Verna, but not so much that it made a huge difference. The ride quality of the Vento is a bit stiff (similar to Punto) compared to Verna.

But the reason I chose Verna over Vento are :

1. Better features for the Price (VFM)
2. Better showroom experince and response
3. Better A$$ (For sure) and choice.
4. Free Service for a year(Labour charges)
5. Cheaper spare part prices
I would suggest take a long TD of both the vehicles, preferably back to back, and evaluated on all of your criteria and then make an informed decision.

Best wishes for your new vihicle.

If you are looking for feature rich then Verna will suit your requirement, but if you are looking for ride, handling and build to last quality then Vento will not disappoint you!

Cheers!

Re: Which Diesel car for ~10 Lakh? Vento vs Verna vs Rapid vs Fiesta vs Linea vs Othe

Thanks guys for helping me out...i am now most probably going to buy vento highline.
The new vento highline has all the features like GPS nav, new RCD 320 stereo(usb, aux etc) steering mounted controls, rear view camera.
The best thing is the current offer which is valid till 17th feb acc to which i have to pay 50% of the ex showroom price and road tax now and the balance after 12 months without any interest.

Could you explain the 50-50 offer in detail?

From what I understand, you have to pay 50% of the ex-showroom price + all other charges upfront, and then the remaining 50% after 12 months. Is that right?

The insurance seems to be on the higher side even if it is Zero Depreciation. Make sure you take zero depreciation insurance only.
Call a few agents outside and get the quotes.
