I'd like to see Argentina and Messi win too. But the first goal (penalty) yesterday was nonsense. (Not the kick, that was superb, but the decision to award.) No reason to give Argentina a penalty shot for that. Why on earth didn't they check VAR? They have wasted enough VAR check time this world cup checking for marginal off sides, surely they should have called for a VAR check for that. Unfortunate (and I'm saying this as an ARG fan). Perhaps a slight bias is creeping in to ensure that "Messi fulfills his 'destiny'". Would be fantastic from a marketing point of view. Not so sure from a football point of view.

Re: The Football Thread

^^ I'd rather see a France vs Argentina match this Sunday. Especially keen to see the contest between Mbappe & Messi for the Golden boot with Alvarez nipping at their boots (pun intended).

It would do a great deal for football's future in general if Morocco are able to pull the miracle and beat France; especially given it'll be the first time an African team would reach the world cup final. If my memory serves me right, they already are making history - Morocco became the first African team to qualify for the semifinal of the FIFA World Cup when they beat Portugal.

But the best teams have to meet in the final to see a proper match appropriate of the situation. Both France & Argentina (give or take a few scenarios in the league matches) will be expected to bring their A-game; more important, it's Messi & Mbappe who are the players to watch out for.

Re: The Football Thread

Messi's quest to win the World Cup has a few similarities with our very own Sachin Tendulkar's journey. Here's how:

1. India lost the cricket WC final in 2003. Argentina lost the football WC final in 2014. Messi & Sachin were declared player of the tournaments for their respective World Cup campaigns.

2. India were knocked out in the Group stages in the very next 50 over WC in 2007. Similarly Argentina were dumped out of the group stages in 2018.

3. India finally won the next cricket world cup in 2011, which was Sachin's last chance to win it. And now Argentina is in the final in 2022. With Messi being 35, it's safe to say that 2022 is his last chance to win the WC.

I was enjoying this world cup as a neutral, but after noticing the above, I'm now cheering Argentina

Edit: Messi confirms the 2022 final will be his last World Cup match

From what I understand and read, any time a player who is through towards goal is obstructed, even if the opposition player simply runs towards and stops in front of the player without touching the ball then it is a foul and since this happened in the box it was a penalty. Here the goal keeper came forward to block but completely missed the ball, instead obstructed a player in the box.

One can say the player can avoid collision but the momentum a player carries while running forward cannot be stopped suddenly. Hence the rule probably.

Re: The Football Thread

Famous Morocco defense crashed in less than 5 minutes against France. Superb finishing.

Riots break out in Brussels, and many cities of France after Morocco's defeat.

Such a sad state of Morocco "fans"

Re: The Football Thread

Yesterday France did way better defense than Morocco. It was a well deserved win for France, even though Morocco got unlucky twice.

Re: The Football Thread

As we wait with bated breath for the finals tomorrow FIFA has affected my family's life in a rather unexpected way. On 18th is the wedding of one of my children and as a mark of respect and practicality the celebration was moved from being an evening one to a morning-lunch affair one so that guests can get back in time to watch the world cup!!! And many of those from outstation have moved their return travel to 19th. The power of the most important tournament in the world.

Re: The Football Thread

What a boring final it is. Looks like something serious with France team, there is no intent to score!

True, something wrong with France. The much hailed MBappe is nowhere to be seen. The only strategy that France has is to score yellow cards seems like. What a shame for them to be in the Final. Or did I jump the gun too fast, and they will open up in second half? Very tough now as Argentina will now form a brick wall at the defense. Good luck France for the next 45 minutes.

Suddenly 2 goals from Mbappe and it's interesting again.

Re: The Football Thread

Football is such an amazing game. Me and my friends were so happy that Argentina have sealed the deal and this is at that very moment, France made their 1st Goal. We were like, this was a fluke due to penaltiy and the a few moments later, our dreams were shattered.
