That's not even fully grown :(

I was not exaggerating when I said they don't belong in the home aquarium hobby. They are suited for large ponds only.

They grow very big almost hitting the 3ft mark. Are very skittish as well.

It's like buying a great Dane dog for your single room apartment.

Just Google for adult sizes of all the fishes you plan to buy and decide if you have the tank size to house them.

A general benchmark should be thrice its length and breadth should be once or twice its size.

Red ear slider grows to 1ft

Tin foil barb grows to 14inches

Common carp 40-80cms

You get the picture I hope

Damn, I knew I will have you take mine out when you said 2ft but I didn't picture them like full-fledged fish that belongs in natural habitat only

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

So I got to work over the weekend and sent back the black shark and the tinfoil barb. The barb suddenly got extremely aggressive towards the 2 Koi I have. To replace them, I got 2 colour widow tetra which goes with my black widow tetras. They're younger than the other fish I have and slightly shy. Hope they open up as they adapt to the new environment.

Once the Koi Carps outgrow the tank too, I'll have all Tetras and Mollys. The LFS had some pretty tanks with natural plants full of colourful Tetras and Mollys that I might try to replicate

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

I was looking to add couple of Fishes to my Setup and got a new pair of Fishes from the LFS. I found them attractive but they also look a bit mean and aggressive. The Shop guy told me it's name, but i don't quite recall it now. Posting a couple of Pics. Can anyone help me with it's name and it's nature and if it will go along well with my Tetras, Danios, Guppies and Platies.

Thanks.

That is the Ram Cichlid.

Be careful with this in the tank with neons. You'll slowly realise that they are becoming it's meal.

Aggressive to docile and smaller fishes. They will consume anything that will fit their mouths and as they grow, smaller fishes will be history.

Friends.. I'm really sorry for this long rant but I thought this is the only place to share my experience with like minded souls.

This is the post from a person who believes that any creature other than HUMAN BEING is most HONEST than any species on the earth.

Okie, coming back to main essence of the thread. I'm very fond of animals and always had a desire to be with them as a family member. But limited life span of them is always a concern for me because I can't handle the emotional trauma of DEATH of anyone associated with me. So Dogs & Cats which I like the most from my childhood are always ruled out being family members after seeing people going through very tough times after demise of a pet.

So incidentally got an easy way out to balance this dilemma, it was a fishkeeping hobby recently developed due to suggestion of vastushastra specialist. As a novice, just jumped in this hobby triggered by deep hidden desire of being with a pet.

Now as per vastushastra consultation, I need to have 8 Goldfish and 1 black goldfish (a common norm). And I simply followed it by procuring a fish tank of size 1.5 x 0.9 x 2 feet with all above guys. Lots of YouTube videos followed up for setting up a new habitat for my beloved new guests at home. And after religious following each and every step, my guys are happily enjoying their HOME since 4 months. All advices strictly followed up from all sources, may it be feeding only 2 times a day with only 3 granules each a member, 24 hrs filters and air purging always ON, changing of 25% of water every two weeks and all.

All is going on happily, kids has now given names to our new friends as "RAJA", "JOHNNY", "SUNNY", "CHARLIE" and most beloved black guy "ROCKY"

To be continued...

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Congrats and welcome to the hobby. Glad you are finding out about setting up tanks and all that from youtube.

Please bear in mind that Goldfishes are not suited for the tank you have mentioned. They are fishes that love space and besides they crap a lot so need large space to handle the bioload.

For 9 goldfishes, i would suggest you get a 5ft/6ft tank if you plan to raise them to adulthood in a healthy way.

Air filters alone are not enough. You need biological filters to break down the toxic waste generated by the fishes.

Do 50% water changes every week and add seachem prime.

No clue about Vasthu so sorry i can't help you with that.

The tank is too small. For now do larger more regular water changes, limit feeding to once a day and upgrade to a larger tank when you can

I have bought a few parrot fishes in my tank 2 weeks ago. But they are very shy, and pile up at the rear corner of the tank. They come out for meals, but hide again. I read online that it takes time for parrot fishes to drop shyness, and it may take a few weeks. Any experience about such behavior in parrot fishes?

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Guys, need help. Am a noob and started with keeping a betta fish in a small tank. Been topping up water and cleaning the filter every week and no problems for an year. However over the last 2-3 weeks, the fish has suddenly become lethargic and has loss of appetite. It lies at the bottom of the tank. I don't see anything physically wrong with it except for slight swelling under its mouth. Please advice on what to do.
