AFAIK, Gar is the common(family) name. Your's looks to be a spotted gar "Lepisosteus oculatus".

I have seen a lot of aquarium shops in kolathur selling small(4 to 8 inch) alligator gars and 2-3 inch redtail catfish to unsuspecting hobbyists. They look nice at that size. Little do they realize that they are baby monsters that could grow upto 8 -10 ft.

That looks like a Florida Gar. Will grow to 3ft in wild and 2ft in the aquarium. Good that you didn't get the Gator gar which can get upwards of 7ft! And is sadly very commonly sold in the hobby :(

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Need some help in deciding for a fish tank. Are the imported aquariums good? I find them very cheap to custom made glass tank. But as per local shops, these imported tanks are made with thinner glass and are hence less durable.

I am specifically looking at boyu ea120 tank.

Pros:
Looks amazing as they are devoid of sharp corners and visible silicone
Comes with stand, lights and a stop.

Cons:
Usually more expensive
Even if one side of tank gets a crack [very rare] whole tank has to be changed.
Stands are usually not of great quality.

That looks like a great starter tank.

What fishes are you planning to get?

Imported tanks have a beauty of their own. The rimless curves look very beautiful. They are easy to maintain as well. The top filters work very well. I would say buy the tank and build a stand/table. I don't have experience with company stand.

I have Boyu EA60 tank. Now a days I think Boyu models come with LEDs, which are even better. The model you are looking at is very big, 4 feet in length. It has two set of filters on top. I found it to be too much for my use.

These Boyu tanks are not just long, they are also tall. I found them to be better than other Chinese companies like RK etc. Thumbs up for Boyu from my side, though I would say that be sure about your size requirement. 4 feet is too long.

I dont need stand as i have furniture with the space for this aquarium.
Currently i have carp and tiger barbs. I might replace them with smaller fishes like tetras with some aquatic plants in new tank.

Not yet. I need to start searching now for a seller. I see it listed on some online portals.

What is the glass thickness of your tank. Is it 8 mm?
I already have a 4 feet old aquarium that developed leakages and i am going to replace that with new one.

Are you planning a planted setup or just fish? These chinese design tanks limit your ability to add your choice of accessories and may not be suitable in the long run. But yes, they look good and are easy to maintain.

I will start with small fishes and plan for plants as well (along with fishes) in future. Can you please elaborate more on accessories which will be difficult to add in chinese tanks?

Glad to hear that the carps are being replaced They belong in ponds in my opinion.

Yeah, even i am curious as to how they are limiting to adding certain accessories.

Think the tank is available for 20k online?

I am told that these chinese moulded tanks use normal glass ( not ultra clear glass). I am not sure how much difference does this make in viewing.

I wanted to setup an automatic feeder, but can't close the top lid when when the feeder is in place. Installing the feeder itself is a challange due to the plastic lining/frame surrounding the top edge.
See the pic below.

If you want to upgrade the lights or filter at a later time, you'd face similar challenges. And the stock LEDs are not so great.
