Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Excess light could be the problem or some mineral imbalance in the tank.

Clear the algae and get algae eaters like siamese algae eater, chinese algae eater, otocinclus or a bristlenose pleco to control algae along with reduced lights

Attachment 1829272

1. Increase CO2 dosage by means of a CO2 supplement - a few good ones are available on Amazon.

2. Reduce Light intensity/cycle time.
3. Water change.

I have Seachem flourish and flourish excel with me. I have not been adding them in the tank since a few months(being lazy).
How much and how frequently should i add them? My tank is ~140L(32L x 16W x 21H inch)

I have a light period of 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening. I'll reduce it to 2 and 2.

Hair moss hates CO2 and it usually grows because of excessive light and low/irregular CO2 in the water. Get any Algae minus CO2 suppliment and it will go away soon - Just be sure to scrape/trim the moss and even clip off the leaves that they're growing on. My planted tanks have seen their share of hair moss when I'm traveling for over a week. Its a real pain to deal with but the remedies are fairly straightforward.

Seachem flourish usually accelerates hair moss growth if the CO2 supply is low or irregular. Search Excel is a good alternative to CO2 supplements.

What I can see on the plants and the driftwood is BBA (Black brush algae/Black beard algae). Hair algae tend to be thin and long like threads. BBA is caused by a lack of CO2 or variation in water parameters. The holes in the Anubias suggest a lack of nutrients, mainly potassium.

Treating BBA is not easy. It's one of the toughest algae to get rid off. The fastest way to kill BBA is to treat it with Hydrogen peroxide. But Hydrogen peroxide will release excess oxygen and poison your fish (personal experience).

Remove all the plants and wood to a bucket of water and get H2O2 from a nearby lab equipment seller. Use a syringe and inject H2O2 on the affected areas. BBA will slowly turn white and die. Physically remove all traces of BBA and thoroughly wash the plants and wood to remove any H2O2. Make a large water change with chlorine-free freshwater (not borewell) and introduce the plants and wood. Improve your dosing and CO2 (not an absolute necessity).

Thanks!! Is Seachem Flourish Excel a good workaround for CO2, or something else? I don't have a CO2 injection.

What fertilizer would you suggest for the potassium shortage?

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

There's no need for additional CO2 for Anubias. They are slow growers anyway. You can check for Aquasphere range of fertilizers online. They do a good job. You can continue with Seachem Flourish Excel, but do follow a routine.

Weekly water changes of 20%. Dosing as required. Cleaning your filter once every 3 months with aquarium water only. Never water from the tap.

How did you manage keep the water in the tank so clear without hard water stains on the glass? After I shifted to Coimbatore I literally given up the fish keeping hobby due to the hard water here.
But still the hobby is in me alive even after 12 years . I get tempted when I see some good aquariums being posted here.

Do not use water from the borewell. Use municipal supply or RO water. Borewell water all over Coimbatore and nearby is very hard. So unless you are growing African cichlids, it's better to choose soft water.

Also, I usually run large external filters. High circulation and over filtration. It works like magic. My filter is rated for 600 lts and I'm using it in a tank that barely carries 120 lts.

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Guys, does anyone know which aquarium grade silicone sealant is used by people in India. I need to repair a leak on the tank outlet on my home water tank and I can't find food grade silicone online in India apart from importers on Amazon. Aquarium sealants are supposedly just as good and safe, so trying to find the avaialble options in India.

Re: My Fishkeeping hobby

Wow, never realised until now that we already have a thread running on my favorite pass time. Don't know how I've missed it. Anyways, went through the posts at a single go. Very happy that petrol and water also mix in this thread.

I've been in this hobby since 1992, learning all the way and still learning. Though do hope to share whatever l've learnt with other members who wish to jump into this exciting and at the same time calming hobby.

For a start, here are some of my creepy, crawlies, critters who are there in my tanks.

Say hello to the cute Hillstream loach

My favourite ones, the Celestial Pearl Danios

My Fishkeeping hobby-img_20190217_222620.jpg
The prowling submarine, Platinum Halfbeak, my favourite.

My Fishkeeping hobby-img_20190217_222137.jpg
Another C. hodgarti

My Fishkeeping hobby-img_20190217_223004.jpg
And my most favourite of them all (ugh, haven't I used that already twice), the tiniest ones, one of the world's smallest, Danionella translucida.

The colours they spread surely make my day after a hard day at work.
