Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

One more upvote for Go Native, we visited the HSR Layout branch few days ago.

Totally worth a visit just for the overall experience of the place - a lovely store selling handmade products including apparel and plants. The restaurant is actually a casual dining cafe and the food and beverages are excellent.

We tried a few items and were impressed, definitely on the list for another visit soon.

Loved the Ghewar Chole chaat, Lahsooni Paneer Tikka, and the fried dumplings. Also tried one of the flavoured Kombuchas and the masala Buttermilk. On the next visit, I want to try their veg platter and pizza.

Since you mentioned the 80's, do you know/remember these restaurants in and around Brigade road, most are not around anymore!

1. Kohinoor (Lemon tea, Ceylon parota and Kerala parota were some of my favourites)

2. Casbah at the entrance of Rest house road (next to Pecos if I remember correctly) - excellent Rotis, Naans and other Punjabi dishes

3. RR - I think this pre-dates Nagarjuna for Andhra food. They had relocated later to a new location on Church Street but I'm not sure if they're still around!

4. Ulhas - in the public utility building, the space now houses Shiv Sagar. Excellent south and north indian food and always crowded due to the coffee crowd of BBMP and touts brokering deals

5. Sangam - near Chin Lung on Residency road. Excellent South Indian food, great Poori bhaji/masala and Sambar Vada

6. India coffee house on MG road - excellent coffee, sandwiches, cutlets, omelettes and dosas. They later relocated to Church street but I've never been there.

One word of caution. The place is on the first floor and there is no elevator. Even inside, there are multiple levels. Something to keep in mind if you want to visit with older folks.

Post relocation. had been there for breakfast on a weekday (around an year back, COVID was still a thing at that time). Turned out to be a bad experience. Coffee tasted like light instant coffee! Vada was extremely oily.
It could be that I'd gone in a bit early (~8.30AM), the place was practically empty and they were still getting started for the day.
Hope things have improved post that.

Yes to most, but I was a small child in a small town in the 80s, not in Bangalore and certainly not eating out.

Yes, I've been in here once or twice and had a meal. I didn't find it remarkable at the time, but then I also think Koshy's is overrated. I think it's now a Xiaomi store, or something of the sort. Opposite the KFC / Puma store on Brigade Road.

Not been to either of these.

Yes, RR was the original. They were located where the Benetton store now is, unless that's again changed to something else. Very interesting story of RR here https://www.instagram.com/reel/CnD19...d=YmMyMTA2M2Y= . In the early-mid 2000s, they tried to have a reborn branch near what is now RMZ Ecowhatever, in that Kadubeesanahalli area. It was called, rather unimaginatively, O'RR, though I found it hilarious. Their food was far better than what Nagarjuna serves.

I loved this place. It was in a skyscraper, the dosas came in cones, and they had a softy machine - this is all a child can ask for. It was the only vegetarian restaurant that I would go to willingly. I blame it for a lifelong love of Udupi sambar - the only kind of sambar that should exist.

Yes, I've been to both. It's a run-down Koshy's, though they do some great mutton cutlets. In Kerala they do incredible beef cutlets, though I can't say I remember them in Bangalore.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

I finally gave in to the temptation and visited Rameshwaram Cafe at Jp nagar, last week. With hardly any place to even stand and eat, I managed to get my food coupons and had the Podi Idly, Masala dosa and Sambar vada. The only item I liked was the dip Vada. The other two were generously soaked in Ghee. I don’t think I’ll go back again. As far as I could tell from looking at the food plates of others eating there, most dishes seem to be an over does of Ghee. Definitely not to my taste buds.

Is the sambar Udupi sambar aka the only true sambar, or is it one of those other abominations?

The other India coffee house outlet in the Coffee Board premises on Dr Ambedkar Veedhi has just been recently renovated and reopened. On my list to visit sometime.

Visited here today. Ah! No, this is not as good as Murugan Idli Shop (for me). And Rs.80/idli, to stand and eat on the foot path is a rip off. And what a bad tea they served. A tasteless and bitter thing. What a crazy crowd however. They have hijacked the footpath and even the open areas of the nearby restaurants.

No, they haven’t. I took my friends there with a lot of build up. The experience was disappointing. Cold coffee tasted bad and my friends ordered mutton cutlet on my insistence and apparently was inedible. Service wasn’t great too.

You quoted a post from 2005 :-)

How does it compare to Rim Naam, The Oberoi MG Road?

Actually stumbled upon this thread today, didn't know there were food threads here!
Haven't tried the Oberoi restaurant but visited Inazia in Jan 2023, the chef there( Rungtiwa Sorlae) used to be in Chandigarh then Mumbai, and have had the Thai chef's food for more than 10 years now and having visited Thailand several times can safely say in comparison this is as good if not better!

Nothing compares to Rim Naam! Though Thai Basil / House is good and authentic too. Much more casual as well.

Totally agree. The setting, attentive service, portions & taste is just right without being over the top.
