Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

A little contrarian view here - but why is a printed bill (or GST-inclusive bill) a factor in rejecting a restaurant. Certainly, it would be great if everyone is compliant with the law and am in no way suggesting to circumvent it, but for a restaurant if you are happy with the taste, hygiene, ambience (if applicable), should this even be a reason to avoid a restaurant.

I frequent a restaurant in my area, and some times their systems are down or they run out of paper. The crowd is so much (and extremely impatient) that they are forced to immediately start handing out paper chits with orders written on them or sometimes even verbally communicating with the kitchen staff.

It happens, and certainly if it is a popular place with a crowd waiting to grab food, there is very little one can do. With a full-service or a fine-dine restaurant, I understand, but many of these high-volume darshini-cum-restaurants, I guess it happens once in a while and its okay.

One part of the Excise Act says 18, one says 21. 18 is fine, and they're not going to get carded or caught for anything.

Anywhere on JP Nagar ORR (near Pump House etc.), Indiranagar 12th Main / 100 ft Road (Indiranagar station), or Church St. (MG Road station)

Metro works for all the above locations. Uber / Ola work well as well, if you can get one - even the auto option. They will score +1000 brownie points for speaking Kannada, that much is guaranteed.

Lucky kids!

OT for this thread.. but this weekend I realized there is a direct exit into church street from the mg road metro station. I wish other metro stations were also built with multiple exits instead of having to walk around in circles. The Indira nagar metro station could have easily been designed to have an exit directly into 100 feet road near KFC one side and MTR on the other.

One-offs no, BUT if it seems to be a reality at ALL busy times, then it is an ongoing scam. No record of billing and cash collection means they are gaming the GST system tolerances and ensuring your 'tax paid' is going into their pockets. Next time request them to lower your bill too by the 6-8% that they are not remitting to the GoKa.

Systems evolve and dishonest people do too I fear.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

Happened to visit ‘Kadamba’ restaurant on Mysore Road, it’s on your left, a few hundred metres before you enter the expressway.

Ordered the South Indian meals. What a delight. Sumptuous food. Holige, Masala Dosa, Pulav (or Palav as they call it), lots of rice and Sambar and rasam and a couple of palyas. Ended with a Banana and a Paan. Delicious indeed. I had a meal of this sort after ages.

The only issue though is, they accept either cash or cards. No UPI/digital payments.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

In the last two weeks, I've managed to go to Navu's new place and the much-acclaimed Lupa.

Lupa - this is Chef Manu Chandra at the top of his game. BLR is lucky to have adopted to Manu - he (and his team) gave us Monkey Bar, Fatty Bao, Toast & Tonic, Olive - all of which began here in this town before becoming metropolitan favourites nationally. I've been meaning to go since it opened, but only managed to make it now. The food is excellent, one step short of truly world class. The space is expansive, and strikes all the right chords. Intimate dinner, first date, celebration with family, or bringing out of town guests - Lupa will not let you down. And neither will the food, unless your standard meal is at Nobu or Osteria Francescana. The cocktails are fantastic. The service, however, is even better than the food and drink.

Navu - I've missed these ladies and their sublime food since they moved out of BIC, and I haven't been around for their pop-ups. Their new space in Domlur is in a small lane, and very non-restaurantey. The food continues to be brilliant. Again, one of those world class places that we're lucky to get at BLR rates.

I also had the extreme misfortune of going to a place called Lucky Chan. In hindsight, I would have rather gone to bed hungry.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

Based on the recommendation by a friend, i visited the Yelakki Chikkanna Tiffin Room in Cubbonpete area. And I enjoyed the fare doled out.
It is on 13th cross accessible from the lane next to Halasuru gate police station and from Kandaya bhavan sides. Be warned, it may get difficult to get a 2W parking at peak hours. This hotel operates between 7:15 to 11:30 or earlier. And also you need to exercise patience until the food arrives as it is a 1 man 1 woman show here. Only couple of stools to sit while standing out is preferred choice.
Coming to food, we had Mini masala dosa, pulao and thatte idly. The dose was the star of the show. Hot, crispy at the edges and soft at the middle with a slightly runny palya and spicy chutney. Although the chutney dunked the dose, it was enjoyable fare. The thatte idly was soft and the chutney helped it greatly. The pulao on the other hand was mellow but stuck the right notes with the chutney. The total bill came to 170 bucks. Definitely worthy fare if you are fine with missing out on luxury.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

Hi All, looking for recommendations for our team event

Event: Dinner + Drinks
Group: Approx 30-35 people
Area: Around Bagmane Capital i.e., Mahadevapura/whitefield/Marathalli/Koramangla etc.,

Good veg options should also be available since there are quite a few vegetarians.

Preferred option would be a buffet with dinner and drinks included, if not atleast the food can be a buffet to avoid ordering hassles

If there are any activities like bowling etc., that would be a bonus, but not mandatory.

Thanks a lot in advance!

The top two that came to my mind do not serve a buffet so let me skip those. Consider Grand Mercure near Gopalan Mall on Old Madras road. It's a pretty decent place.

Can anyone help with the best grill restaurant in Whitefield? Been multiple times to Barbecue Nation, it’s not an exciting anymore. Been to AB’s once. Was a long time back so Sony remember it well enough. Any other suggestions?

Have heard good reviews on BIG BBQ, near Marathalli. For me, all of these taste the same with some specific items thrown in, so if you want to explore, this may be a good option.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

I'd tried The Filter Coffee in Banaswadi few months ago and liked it (i think I had posted about that experience on this thread).
Recently tried their newish branch on 80 feet road, Indiranagar. The place did not disappoint - everything was excellent (though if I have to nitpick, I'd say the white coconut chutney wasn't that great). Highly recommended. Disclaimer - if you like Tamil Nadu style preparations.
Needless to say, don't miss their "Original Filter Coffee"!

Edit: anyone who loves Rameshwaram cafe should try this to compare/contrast

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

Was at the Lalbagh garden this Sunday so tried out Vidyarthi Bhavan, Gandhi Bazaar. Totally hopeless experience.

The old guy at the entrance who manages the waiting crowd and calls out token numbers is super-rude. Moreover after half an hour of waiting, the choice of food you get it is 2 types of dosa & 1 type of vada and everything tasted average. Overall a sub-par experience.
The plus side was - we were a group of three with one seat available on our table. A local mid aged gentleman asked if the seat was vacant and just sat there. We were initially taken aback but realised maybe that’s the way. We ended up chatting with him and was good company for the duration of the meal.

After Vidyarthi Bhavan, next on the list was buying Mysore Pak. Tried Sri Venkateshwara and A2B nearby.
Full marks to Sri Venkateshwara for the amazing taste and freshness. It was damn costly but overall worth it.

PS: if you go to Venkateshwara, do not buy the ‘Regular Mysore Pak’ even though it is cheaper. Go for the one which does not have ‘regular’ in its name. The difference in taste is significant.

Re: A Guide: Eating out in Bangalore

OT : Not a restaurant review.

Went to Church Street to meet a few friends for lunch yesterday.

Church Street has got its mojo back as a cool place to hangout. A number of new eateries, a few unique carts (speciality coffee, cheese cakes etc), lots of stalls selling clothes, trinkets etc and then there is the Blossoms book store.

We had a long leisurely lunch at Mandarin Box. Recommended for the open air ambience and customisation options. Luckily, it started drizzling only when we had finished lunch.

This junction near Church Street Social is all European style hep now. Had ice cream at Milano ; desserts here are a feast for all the senses . But it was super crowded on a Sunday afternoon. The unique ice cream flavours did make up for the unpleasantness of the crowd.

Overall I had a very enjoyable afternoon.

ps - For a richer Church Street/Brigade road experience, take public transport and walk. Apart from the metro, BMTC has good frequency of buses starting from the Brigade road/Residency road junction - G-2 (Sarjapura road), G-3 (E-city), G-4 (BG road). Buses are empty on Sundays and it is free for the womenfolk .
