Swimmer should be Antony Nesty of Suriname. Famous for edging out Matt Biondi by a 100th of a second in 88 Seoul. Sorry for going OT

Again OT, tt was indeed Nesty. And he was honoured by a grateful nation in a number of ways. Stamp, Coin, naming the Indoor stadium in the capital not to speak of the ill fated plane.

Those were the days where BBC World Service radio was still popular in my part of the woods and I remember hearing the "sad" news and shortly after, the good news as well (reg Nesty).

Definitely yes - but not in a "service" section of a self service restaurant

Back to topic - in one of the more famous vegetarian restaurants in Quilon Kerala -quite reknowned - a few decades back , I used to see this exotic sounding item "cuttymore" listed in the Menu along with the Iddlis and Vadas and Dosas. Didnt want to try out such an exotic item but realised I was worrying for nothing when finally worked out what exactly was "cuttymore"

In the local language "Katti" + " Moru" = Curd - "Cuttymore" was just plain curd!!!

I just read three pages of this thread and laughed holding on to my stomach.

Then why did it made me cry a minute later?

Well, once you get addicted to it, this is how you will ask for it. "Lime soda", or "Lemon soda".

If you want sprite or 7-up, just say one and the waiter will correct you if they stock the other one.

re: Life's like that: Real life anecdotes

A few months ago my son came running to me with his notepad and a pencil.

Him: Do you know how to draw an ex malaysian?
Me: what?
Him: Ex - Ma - lay - shun
I am scratching my head.

He proceeds to give the demo. Draws a big exclamation mark, and loudly wonders what school I went to.
Since then, he tries to find his grandpa or mom before coming to me.

re: Life's like that: Real life anecdotes

One from my side. Not really funny though, but something which makes me and my friends laugh till the day.

Some 3 years ago, had appeared for CET. The results were out at 12 in the night, and some of my friends who checked it, told me in the morning when I had just left my bed.
Got up, started the computer and checked online for the result. The score was not good enough compared to my friends. Anyhow, I messaged them my score and started with my daily morning chores.

Now, they received my message and after realizing that my score was not good enough, all of them started calling me up. I being busy in my morning chores, and my phone being on silent (prefer not to get disturbed at night by some of my friends who send messaged at night) did not answer any of their calls.

After some time, when I checked my phone, it had some missed calls as well as messaged telling me not to get depressed and do something untowardly. They thought that I am not answering them because I might have got depressed or something. When I saw the messages, I was laughing all in front of my parents and they are in the thought that why is this boy laughing after scoring low in an exam.

Had a hearty laugh with all my friends on a conference call later and this makes us laugh till today.

Clearly you guys don't watch Russel Peters. It's not how you spell it, or how you say it; it's how you sound it.

Haven't you heard about the guy from Africa, who's name was !Xobile? Do you know how to pronounce his name?

No? Go watch Russel Peters (episodes)

re: Life's like that: Real life anecdotes

Right, so thats one of his smaller conversations.

The other day we were driving to Sarasbaug temple in Pune for Ganpati aarti. The road is bumpy as usual and traffic is maddening. my wife informs me that we have received a property tax bill for our apartment. Obviously the next question comes from the rear seat. 'I know property, its like what we play in business. but what is tax?'
Me: We pay this amount to the city corporation as contribution for the city expenses
Him: what is a corporation?
Me: Its like the Mairie or Rathaus that we had been to a couple of years ago.
Him: What do we pay for?
Me: So they can provide public transport and roads, etc.
Him: Do we not pay here?
Me: yes, we do
Him: then why dont they have buses and roads like they have. look, the buses dont even have doors.
Me: yes, but we still have to pay. we use other facilities like roads, footpaths
He has had enough, takes off his seatbelt and stands in the rear.
Him: The roads are full of holes, the footpath is broken all over and even A (name protected, his school friend) fell down yesterday while trying to walk on it.
You must not have paid last year.

My wife is enjoying the conversation while smirking out the front window. Thankfully we reach our destination and he is distracted enough to stop the conversation

two things here:
- Ranting is genetic.
- he thinks my tax payment is going to improve the roads!

I will introduce him to you guys when I thaw my TL in October. In the meanwhile, enjoy your former malaysians!
