Thankfully, someone at MCU has a sense of humor that hasn't been crushed.
This one had laughs and emotions to equal measure. Waiting for an episode when they all finally join hands with the Avengers.

Hidden Figures:

Brilliant performance by all the lead actors and loved Costner too. Good to see that such movies are coming out sharing the true story of some amazing people.

Rating - 4.5/5 (Must Watch)

Get Out:

I watch all thriller/horror movies that are out but this one caught my eye - 8/10 on IMDB and 99% on rotten tomatoes . This movie is very creepy but what a brilliant one. Must watch for someone who loves thriller genre.

Rating - 5/5

Ben Hur (2016)

I just cannot sit through the magnum opuses of the past. They just seem too adtifical. When I saw that tehre was remake of this one though, I pounced on it.
Its brilliant!!
More or less the same as the original. Cast is medium level, except for God, who plays the benefactor as Morgan freeman in this version.

Definitely a good watch, except that Judah's time in the galleys looks to be short, considering that it was such a long time.
5/5

xXx The Return of Xander Cage: Wish he hadn't returned though :P All through the movie i felt as if i was watching an Austin Power's movie. Not even worth a popcorn pack on a sunday afternoon.

Great Wall: Had potential, watched it to the end without skipping, but poor CGI in many parts and couldn't help but note how the Chinese army were always impeccable in makeup and attire.

Next on the list, Get Out: Hope it's like "Don't Breathe"

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

The Great Wall (2016) dir: Zhang Yimou

The first Zhang Yimou film that I really did not like!

Yimou is one of the great directorial talent of our times. I am a huge fan of his. And that meant huge expectations with this film. But, unfortunately, this film is an epic fail. Its not just the story that he is trying to tell (and I am still scratching my head what story he was trying to tell), its not just the elaborate sets that fail to convince and its not just good actors like Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe completely wasted. Actually I had a feeling if secretly this film was directed by Michael Bay instead.

The only thing good about the film is its name. Really, Yimou could have done without making this aberration.

Thanks for the recommendation! Watched it on Apple TV (movie just released there). Excellent performances; just a lot more interesting when you know it's a true story.

Makes you think, there are such incredibly smart people in the world you've never heard about.

Infractions: 0/2 (8)

Finding Altamira.
Antonio Banderas.
What a terrifically well done film!
A brilliant portrayal of the narrow mindedness, ego and bigotry of the time.
Absolutely wonderful.

Allied
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.
A deeply moving film of humanity in WW2.
Lovely lovely film. Fantastic recreation of the period right down to the music and light filters.

The Carer
Another sensitive tear jerking yet humorous portrayal of an ageing actor, losing his battle slowly, to illness and his 'carer'.
Beautifully set in England largely in a superb country house.
Excellent performances all around!

Saw all these on some flights I took recently.
Best place to watch good films in an uninterrupted way!

I watched "Four Brothers" while on a flight over the weekend. A combination of action and suspense, it is a good one time watch. It is available on Amazon Prime.

Rating: 3.5/5.

Like music?
Like true stories?

If so, watch this classic on Tina Turner. Astonishing acting by Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne & even the little girl in the opening scene. Saw it scheduled on the tube last weekend, checked out its rotten tomatoes rating (96%!!!) and set it up for recording. Giving it 5 out of 5 stars.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

I have been watching Wes Anderson's movies these days and loving them for their unique and different style. There is something common in all of his movies, sort of a theme going on. I like the background music, the subtle comedy, repetitive actors, underlying stories of the characters.

So far watched these four:
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Darjeeling Limited
  • Rushmore
  • The Royal Tenenbaums

Next in the line is Moonrise Kingdom. Looking forward to it as well for tonight.

Thanks for the tip. Had forgotten to watch this. Watched it couple of days back and it was pretty good.

Also watched Brad Pitt in "War Machine" which was a waste of time. And an R Rated comedy "The Change Up" with Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. Funny and worth a watch after a long day at work. Strictly for the guys that one.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Back from Baywatch. I went because the trailers looked fun, and I absolutely loved Horrible Bosses, both of 'em. This one's fun too, sexy, and a good one time watch. However, even after labelling the movie 'A', there are senseless cuts, illogical mutes, etc. They even cut many dialogs which were a part of the trailers!

The women look great, Priyanka has upped her desire quotient (that green dress mmmwah <3) and there's gratuitous display of assets.
