Re: The Regional movies thread!

Malayalee from India- Malayalam- Nivin Pauly- Theater

Did not like Malayalee From India. A barely tolerable first half and a cliched 2nd half with a lot of amateur looking scenes. Counted 5 good scenes in the whole movie. NivinPauly was kind of ok. Acting of most of the supporting cast was bad.

Part of 2nd half is almost an Aadujeevitham spoof. No real coherent connect across the movie. Just some random stuff thrown in with some totally cringe scenes.

Surprised to see such a sub par product from Dijo who made Queen and Jana Gana Mana and producer Listin who is know ln for picking good scripts to produce. Saw an interview from Listin where he had said shooting of this movie is going on and on with no end. So I guess he knew where this would end up.

So after a good run so far with the hyped movies, finally the streak is broken.

Juna Furniture - Marathi - Theatre

‘Juna Furniture’ means ‘old furniture’ in Marathi. I had to kill 3 hours in Pune yesterday and decided to watch this movie. It’s about how a father files a case against his son for a reason (won’t mention spoilers) and also portrays about the importance of one’s child when they are ageing and have become senior citizens. Totally worth the time, imo.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Avesham (Malayalam)

Streaming: Amazon Prime

Based on the reviews on the forum, I had to watch the movie but came out thoroughly disappointed, not to incite any FaFa fans out here. The movie doesn't have any story or plot. Over and above Fahad was literally overacting in my opinion, I was literally shocked to see that. Whatever movies (Kumbalgi night, bangalore days, Pushpa etc) I have seen of Fahad this has to be the worst of them. For an actor his caliber, i think he made a wrong choice. The movie may have set the cash registers ringing but from an acting point of view for which I have simply adored Malayalam movies this one sits at the bottom. One has to watch this movie without any teenage children around for sure coz the content shown is blown out of proportions be it smoking, drinking etc. I would recommend to skip the movie and see any old FaFa movies instead.

As someone who has watched Fahad's movies in theatres, I had to control myself really hard not to watch this in theatres after reading glowing reviews. I knew this wouldn't suit me after seeing the trailer - loud and glitzy.

And I was right. "Finished" the movie in 15 mins flat. That's how "engaging" it was. As another BHPian mentioned, it was pure overacting by Fahad.

Really people..! Could not tolerate the so called block buster movie Avesham for 30 minutes. People simple over rate Fahad Fasil who was overacting in the entire movie. Classic example how few reviewers can make and break movies. Believing these people and and early reviews we are missing real good movies like Anweshippin Kandethum in theaters and forced to watch craps like Avesham.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I suppose some movies just don't appeal to all and is no surprise. I hate the Kill Bill series and couldn't watch it beyond 10-15 mins, but the movie has a global cult following. Looks like Aavesham is on similar lines, seeing the reviews above.

P.S. : I am yet to watch it, so will reserve my comments for later.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched Aavesham in the theater the day before the OTT announcement came. It was a weekday 3pm show and was almost full. So it was not just reviewers singing praises about it. I also felt it was over hyped but felt it was a good enough watch. In my view this is the kind of movie to be watched in a theater with a full crowd. The impact would be more. As others have said, there is no big story or anything. Just Fahad having some fun doing over the top things he normally does not do.

The director's earlier hit movie Romancham also had this polarising views. Either you like it or you hate it.

Knew this would be coming once the movie was out of theatres and available in OTT. Some movies are meant to see be seen in theatres with a raucous crowd.

For the local Malayalee populace, we are frankly bored with 'natural, subtle' movies that are being celebrated as the face of Malayalam movies. We too deserve some 'entertainers' in our own language. This is the kind of movies where storyline and logic doesn't matter much. Frankly, if it was not for Fahad Faasil's and Sajin Gopu's characters, the movie would have been like a college short movie stretched into a feature film. and the drinking/smoking scenes are definitely over the top. Fed up with the constant glorification of alcohol and smoking in this day and age. But hey, college hostels and bars, what else to expect.

Ofcourse, the character is eccentric and borderline psycho. That is how it is meant to be. Just shows his range as an actor IMO, not sure if any other Malayalam actor can pull of the Rangannan role with such ease. A fun watch for those in the mood.

So you are not a fan of Quentin Tarantino's work or just didn't like the Kill Bill series?

"Promotion" is the new marketing term. Yes, it is a "mass" entertainer movie and right from the casting it was meant for one. The 3 kids were auditioned from a pool of social media content creators, and one of them has > 1M subscribers. That itself help pulling crowd to theaters.

Except from not being strong on storyline, I could not find any flaws in other departments. Nitpicking the KA-04-H white board on the Qualis (series is for two-wheelers). Anyway, its a gunda's car

Aavesham - Malayalam (Prime Video)

To get straight to the point - we watched it and really enjoyed it. FaFaa plays an eccentric gangster, so nothing about it can be normal, that too in a movie which throws sensibilities out the window and focusses on entertainment factor.

I followed the advice from vb-saan and had the volume higher than usual and it was a riot! The songs and BGM all contributed to the madness on screen and entertaining it sure is!

Rating : 4/5 purely for entertainment

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Looking at the mixed reviews here, it seems like watching a movie in a theatre with house full crowd and watching it in TV set up with all flexibility to fast forward and easily get distracted makes a huge difference. The off late "mass entertainers" are to be strictly for theatre experience. These types rely heavily on loudness, bass boost, editing cuts, graphics, crowd noise support etc.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I wouldn't have enjoyed Aavesham if I had watched at home and I still havent watched it on OTT. The theater experience made a lot of impact. Same case with Manjummel Boys and Bramayugam- I watched at home the second time and it just felt ok while in the theater it was totally wild.

Reason why I prefer to watch horror movies in the theater.

I slightly beg to differ here. A bad movie or a movie with no gripping plot whether watched in Theatres or at home does not make any difference. A good movie if watched at home (eg Lapata Ladies in Hindi) can be watched in theatres and vice versa.

Frankly spending a wallet full of cash on a movie in a theatre really puts me off. Gone are the days when watching movies in theatre esp the first day first show were exciting and being looked forward to. I guess personally since I have aged, I dont have the inclination of watching any movie in theatre. Last movie I watched was Top Gun Maverick.
