Re: The Regional movies thread!

General comment:

Looks like Bangalore is now the top release centre for Malayalam movies. 100-150 shows seem standard for major releases. I counted 248 shows for Mammootty's Turbo releasing tomorrow. Aadujeevitham had 300+ shows on day 1. Also if the movie has good reviews, it is still hard to get tickets for weekend shows in most areas.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Thalavan starring Bijumenon and Asifali is a taut and very well made investigative thriller. Holds your attention and manages to keep the suspense well. Was planning to go for Turbo but decided to see this after seeing good reviews. Was a good decision. The tail end post the climax is intriguing and makes you discuss the potential interpretations once out of the theater.A sign of a good film. Asif Ali is very good and so is Biju Menon. Hope the film does not get lost in the hype of Turbo and performance of Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil. Deserves to be a big hit. I see more shows getting added in Bangalore which is a good sign.

Rating: 4/5.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil

A Slapstick comedy. I am usually against the viewpoint of "Leave your brains at home" kind of movies but lately I have been very much stressed with work and wanted to have a relaxing time at the cinemas and that is why exactly happened.

Coming to the movie, as someone explained earlier, the screenplay and the style of film-making is a typical Priyadarshan/Siddique-Lal forte which is very difficult to master and we can see director Vipin Das struggling to match that level of brilliance. Having said that, I could connect with the sincerity with which he has approached the movie and most importantly, he has 2 great actors, one of whom is a producer who has thrown their weight behind the director's conviction and that has helped the movie move forward successfully.

Coming to the cast, I am of the opinion that Prithvi cannot do scripted comedy. The initial scenes are proof of that. But, as you move along, his conviction in the role makes us forget that and we end up enjoying the role. But the main hero of the movie is Basil and boy what a performer he is. He is in top form here and carries the movie very well.

The references to other movies are not that subtle but there are some dialogues that people might miss which are outright hilarious.

Overall, I had a perfect time at the theatres and while driving back, I could not stop smiling and singing the song -- Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Radha Kamuka with the face of the guest actor!

All We Imagine As Light

This movie hasn't been released yet in theatres in India. But it had made huge waves in Cannes and is now gathering attention. It is said to be set in Mumbai and Konkan. I would make an effort to watch it in theatres if it released here.

Just watched the press conference with the team:

I was struck by the vision and the humility expressed by the Film maker, and wanted to share it here.

Turbo - Malayalam - Action 3.5/5

The Regional movies thread!-images-68.jpeg

Watched Turbo in a full packed theater.
This is another typical action move which needs to be watched with your logical thinking outside the theater , and with a full house audience.

Mammooty was exceptional in action scenes considering he's almost 74 . Director Vysakh used the ultimate swag of the megastar perfectly.
I guess this movie has few of Mammooty's most intense fight scenes. Yes there are dupes /special effects, but have to give it to him to do this at his age!

Standout scenes are the police station fight sequence, climax fight and the car chase scene.

Vysakh has pulled off this large scale mass action movie really well. After a slow first half, the second half was nicely paced and ended in a high note (with a hint to a possible sequel).
BGM too was very nice for most of the parts and helped to elevate the action sequences.

Raj B Shetty was good as the villian. But this was not a role which needed his skills.

Rest of the cast did well especially Bindu Panickar.

There are flaws, cliched scenes, lack of strong script etc. But it's a good theater watch for mass action movie lovers.

Jai Ganesh - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-a1.jpg

A combination of what we have seen in many regional movies - superhero, investigation etc. So they decided to bring in something new - a differently abled guy leading the play.

Unni Mukundan was decent but at times, he was super bad as well. The plot was bland and the screenplay was super slow and never keeps you excited. Also, it had too many loopholes/weak spots. Not a surprise that it failed in the theater especially when it had other big movies running.

Rating - 2/5 (Manorama Max). Watchable.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Blink-Kannada-Amazon Prime: Had heard about this a little when it released in theaters as being a good one. It is now on Prime.

Basically the theme is time travel which we have seen many times. Even then, I felt this was neatly done, engaging, good number of twists. Need to pay close attention to ensure you do not lose any thread as the movie goes back and forth in time. The ending is good. Maybe few loop holes but can be forgiven in this kind of movie. The actors seem all new- I did not recognize anybody.

Felt it should have got more publicity and visibility during the theatrical release. Several references to old movies, events which I could not connect to due to a lack of understanding.

Rating: 3.5/5

I watched this movie yesterday. I felt this was a good movie with some bad moments. Even my eight year old who doesn't watch Malayalam movies watched the entire movie.

I would rate it 3/5 Definitely above average

A throwback to the Mammootty movies of the 2000s. After a whole bunch of realistic and serious movies, heres a mindless masala flick from Ikka (unless you consider a septuagenarian launching 100+ kg gundas into the stratosphere realistic!). A one time watch, its a bit of a let down just because we have come to expect unique movies from Mammotty of late.

OT: Age is catching up to him, he has slowed down considerably. Its always a bit sad watching your childhood idols age.

You are right. His posture has changed a lot. The way he holds the shoulder up and head slightly down gives an aged look. But hey, he's 74. I'm not sure I will be able to walk properly at that age

I have seen some making videos of Turbo, and I believe this one movie he has put more physical effort than when he was young and fit.

Varshangalkku Shesham - Malayalam

The Regional movies thread!-228166varshangalkku-shesham-dhyan-sreenivasan-pranav-mohanlal.jpg

Watched this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. The humor, music, acting from all involved, as well as the story-telling.. they all just came together, resulting in an enjoyable movie experience.

While Dhyan and Pranav carried the movie with their easygoing charm, the highlight in my eyes had to be Nivin Pauly. His performance is truly etched in my memory and I can easily rewatch those scenes involving him. Aju and Basil brought in their own appeal, well supported by the story and music in particular.

Somewhere, it brought back some memories of Srinivasan and Mohanlal in 'Udayananu Tharam'. Pranav is a replica of the Mohanlal we all came to adore back in the day.

Enjoyable watch, in fact I feel I can watch it again.

Though this movie was heavily criticized as cringe after released in OTT, I liked the movie and your views echoes mine. They have done a good job barring few scenes as per my view. Probably they could have edited the movie atleast 20-30 minutes.

Apparently Vineeth actually wrote this with the idea of Mohanlal and Sreenivasan doing the 2nd half. That would have been something else. Apparently with Sreenivasan's health issues, it was no longer feasible to do.

Most Vineeth Sreenivasan movies opinion falls into 2 buckets. One set people think it is totally cringeworthy and the other set love it. I fall into the 2nd category and enjoy his style of movies.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched Maharaja (Tamil)at the theatres - Full house after long time in a big screen.

What a brilliant movie where story and editing is the Hero and typical Vijay sethupathi classic. A hit for him after long time as a Hero. A worthy watch which should have ideally released during Summer Holidays.

It took good 1 hour for me the recover post watching the thriller and speechless for sometime. Good support by Nutty Natraj and other cop characters, Anurag Kashyap.
