Totally agree. Such a loud crass movie should have caused double head ache had I gone to theaters. Agree the tastes of audience can be different, but I am unable to fathom what is good in this movie. The plot is laughable with sad and strange sentimental weaknesses of a powerful gunda, entire Bangalore fears. The same psychic act done by Fahad in so many other movies has been multiplied 3 times. If this is good acting, sorry not my cup of tea.
The only bad feeling you will have, is for the poor parents who have sent such spoilt brats to Bangalore for higher studies.

You beat me to it. I thought the same. I missed watching Bramayugam in theatres as I didn't get free time. Watched it on OTT and enjoyed it. Ofcourse theatre would have enhanced the experience. But, it was Engaging, with a capital E.
Same cannot be said about Aavesham. If a movie is not engaging, theatre or OTT does not make a difference.
I am not a critical movie watcher, I don't care about loop holes in plot, but movie should be engaging. If the first 10 mins cannot hook my attention, I don't continue, on OTT that is.
P.S. I am a native malayali - if that matters.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Different people different tastes. I watched it on theater and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a pure entertainer and fun with Sushin’s music, nothing else, no logic or no plot.

I watched Varshangalku Shesham and Malayalee from India too, and felt both were cringe fest.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

For me Aavesham did not live up to the hype, and the first 30 minutes or so were totally boring. But I was home alone on a Friday night and had nothing better to do. I think the movie was just okay - I would even rate it above average, but given all the hype, pretty disappointing.

Looks like they imagined the Ranga character first and then wrote a story around it. Without Fahad's Ranga it would have been a total disaster. Fahad's Ranga was over the top but he was definitely entertaining. After all, it is better to let the actors do what they do best, and the makers let him do just that. All other characters and acting were pretty mediocre, especially the college kids. Nanjappa and his fights were good though. And Ashish Vidyarthi rocked those 5 minutes he got on screen. I would have loved to see him more, but the writers had other plans.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I'm totally engrossed by aavesham. Despite being a mallu, I rarely watch Malayalam films because most of them tend to be hyper realistic, with plots the tend to echo real life scenarios. I watch movies to escape reality, and boy does aavesham deliver. I saw it on my PC. Then went and watched it at a theatre, then have been dragging my friends and family to watch it. I've gotten mixed reactions from them, and I understand, different people look for different things, but for me it's a fabulous film.

On the other hand i did not like manjummel boys at all despite its rave reviews. Mostly at fault was the story about a boorish and inebriated tourist who decided to nominate himself for a Darwin award, and then his friends decided to waste the time and effort of all the locals and civic machinery because friendship is apparently more powerful than stupidity. I'm worried that this sends the wrong message to all those so called tourists who already create a bad name wherever they go.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I watched Aavesham in OTT. I should say, this is one movie which I watched without skipping even one scene. While watching Manjummel Boys in big screen, missed remote control to fast forward atleast more than once. For the type of movies coming out in Malayalam, Aavesham is a variety of sorts, as the adage goes, take a break, have a kitkat.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

I was utterly disappointed with Aavesham. Watched it at home with my family and the only thing I liked in the movie were the songs. I don't understand the argument that movies made for the theatre experience doesn't need to have any story or logic.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Okay, so many reviews about Aavesham and I decided to have a go at it. First up- I am an ardent Fahad Faasil admirer and it was all the more reason to watch it. Truth be told, Aavesham is purely an entertainer with a very thin plot, only if one can find it that is. I kept waiting for some twist till the end but all I got was a finale fight scene involving FaFa. This movie, I thought, is in the league of mindless movies starring Salman Khan which made tonnes of money some years back.

Fahad has made an impact as a class actor who has some amazing and critically acclaimed movies under his belt. May be Aavesham was his attempt to do something light on a grand scale and going by the theater collections, I would think he has succeeded in what he intended to do. I would perhaps agree with the view that this movie is a mass entertainer and certainly not meant for OTT. Only the songs perhaps appealed to me, specially the one with the English lyrics which played everytime when FaFa went ballistic on screen.

Rating: 2/5

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Man, I haven’t come across a movie in recent times that has divided the public so much.

I loved Avesham. After watching it in OTT, I felt I should have watched it in the theatres where the crowd would have gone berserk. Could relate so much to those trio from our grad. days. Bibi’s malar exchange had me in splits.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Aavesham is not much about plot or story - it’s a character study of Rangannan, edging into black comedy by playing the unreliable narrator trope for laughs. I liked the movie - it’s pretty much a satirical take on “mass”.

Fafa just went berserk with the material given to him. That’s the bonus!

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Surprising how people on this forum are so divided on Aavesham. I saw it in theatre and absolutely loved it. Infact I again watched in on OTT. I loved the character which was so over the top. It was nice to see a really different kinda movie with good making. I understand the divide though. Romancham also had similar vibe with people. The director surely has my attention now for his upcoming projects. I'm on the look for unique movies and both of his has been fine entertainers.

Re: The Regional movies thread!

After seeing all the negative reviews about FF"s movie and over the top acting,I watched Aavesham and actually liked it.Full time pass.
After missing Manjummel Boys in the theatres,I was looking forward to watching it on OTT and the movie did not disappoint at all.
Actually it brought back memories of whywe as college students did on trips to Kodaikanal and Ooty in the late 80"s and early 90"s.
Cheers

Re: The Regional movies thread!

Watched 'Aavesham' twice in theaters and once on OTT. The theater experience adds a whole new dimension to some films and Aavesham is one of them. I don't rhink movies like Laapta Ladies or Aattam makes a difference in OTT or theatrer. But definitelt movies like Bramayugam, Aavesham etc does makes. The energy of the crowd enhances the viewing, making it a great experience. Now, onto the movie itself – it's a delightful comedy gangster entertainer, a personal favorite genre of mine, and 'Aavesham' nails it perfectly. Fahad Faasil's performance is top-notch, azhinjattam as Ranganna, showcasing his versatility as an actor. It's not just the youth or mass audiences who loved it; even critics praised the movie and its script. Baradwaj Rangan's comment about it being a tie for the Screenplay of the Year-so-far with 'Premalu' resonates it. However, different people , different tastes – while 'Aavesham' may not be everyone's cup of tea, for fans of this genre, it's a must-watch! You notice the screenplay brilliance in your second watch.

Aavesham: 4/5

am not a mallu but Covid has introduced us to the wonderful cinema of the world.
Out and out entertaining movie. Much much better to any senseless Hindi movie. FF is our favourite and he lives up to our expectations. Movie had some undercurrent which kept us engaged till the end.

AFAIK, it wouldn't be in the middle of a proper desert, but like an hour or so drive from main cities or roads. We have to remember this is in the early 90s. The farm could very well be just half an hour drive from civilization, but without a sense of direction/location, no connection with outside world and a gun toting master, he is good as a slave even if he could have escaped if he wanted. Running in the south direction instead of north could mean he would be very well stuck in the desert. Have only been to a small farm in the outskirts of Riyadh and a huge wheat farm, so don't really know how the one's shown in Aadujeevitham would be.

Here is a video by Sanchaaram showing a farm in the desert. The views of the video have shot up considerably following the movie's launch.

About the movie. I was less excited about the storyline and more excited to see how they would show Riyadh. Big disappointment with the first few scenes itself, they didn't even bother showing the Riyadh airport properly, instead showing some generic airport. Though they did manage to find a period correct coin phone used in the airport at that time. Though they did justice in the last scenes where he ends up in Batha area. The cars, the settings. They did manage to recreate 90s Riyadh even if it was for a few seconds.

But if we look at the movie with a traditional Blessy movie yardstick, Aadujeevitham doesn't live upto one standard. You will be okay with watching the movie for a second time, not a thing that one would say for Thanmathra or Kaazcha. Those movies traumatise you so much that one wouldn't dare to watch them again.

Some reviewer did call it out, but then he got online backlash saying how this perfectly portrayed working class youth who didn't have anything to hide and that he was just being classist.

Guess the movie did really well in Tamil Nadu because of the Kanmani song and the story having one of Tamil movies' three staple cornerstones. The resultant hype helped in the movie's success IMHO.
