Went with my family (including parents, kids) last Sunday.

Avoided busy malls on BG road, opted for an empty / under renovation mall and booked an early morning show. Was thinking people won't flock in so early on a cloudy/lazy Sunday morning, that too the 10th day after the movie release.

I was totally wrong, the cine hall was jam packed and all shows for that day were full.

About the movie, all has been said already. Truly exceptional, must be experienced on a large screen.

My native village bordering Mookambika Reserve Forest is close to the film shooting location (now famous as "KFC - Keradi Film City" ). Whenever time permits I just escape from this city life and disappear there within mother nature (just did the same during both the lockdowns).

Rorschach (M) - 1/5 - Theatre

The movie is as puzzling as its name. Cannot review the story because myself and my family slept off. Only time we were awake was to much some pop corns. And then tried to figure out what was going but again fell asleep. Got some coffee but still wasn't enough to keep us awake. Finally in the last 10 minutes while we getting ready to pack up, we got to know what they were trying to say. The 1 point is for some nice BGM's and Mustang show.

Cannot understand why did Mammooty sign up for such terrible movies and also produce it.

Wow, first bad review am hearing for this. All reviews and feedback were highly positive. I wanted to watch last weekend in Kerala but could not get tickets in the regular theaters. Was planning to watch in Bangalore next weekend. Now maybe will wait for some more reviews here.

Oh yeah, I wanted to add that too, that this could be one of the only bad review that you might have seen so far.

I also saw a lot of positive reviews and people raving about it all over and decided to watch this and skipped booking for PS1 or Kantara which is what we were actually trying to book in first place. But alas, it was a disappointment.

Yes, sure, let us see if any one else has a different view point. In any case, no reason to watch in a theatre at least. Can wait for mini screen versions.

Here are the relevant sections from the book "Beteya Urulu" by Kedambadi Jattappa Rai who was a native of Pilimajalu and then later of Navooru-Sulyodi at the foothills of Kudremukh ( but on the Belthangady side). Here he describes what is called a "Jamunge Kovi", "Matchlock Rifle" in English and how to load it.

Now, for the discussion of the back-firing in the movie, I think it was the Flintlock Rifle( or its successor, the percussion lock rifle) that was being used by Kishore's character. I don't remember how close he places the rifle to his face in the movie, but it's more likely what's called the "Flash in the Pan" that hurt him. If it was the percussion, then the reason may have been that the nipple was not closed. Either conjecture aside, I wish I could see the scene now to recheck ( I might plan to watch the movie a second time anyway ).

Now to your question if it will not slow down the bullet, it won't - because the bullet here is inserted after the compaction - and when the gunpowder is ingnited from the rear end, it connects to the compacted gunpowder in the barrel which ignites pushing the bullet in a spinning motion. For it to hit the target: the pupil of the eye, the rear sight of the gun, the front sight of the gun and the target have to be in the same straight line. Just underlines how cumbersome it was handling these for hunting for animals such as Tigers and Boars frequently needed two shots according to the author. it was worse with the matchlock gun as you had to light a coir or a match and manually ignite it and God save if you the match got wet or went out of whack due to weather. Anyway, so many interesting things written by the author. If you have friends in the US that participate in the hunting runs each year, you might get to listen to more current stories.

On the other hand, Muskets seem to be an arm that was used more in wars given it's short loading time while a rifle is more on the farm or for hunting given it's built specifically for aimed targets.

Have to rely entirely on subtitles. So, will one be able to watch/enjoy/understand/appreciate Kantara? With the reviews seeing about this movie, I don’t want to miss it watching in a theatre.

I always prefer to watch movies in the original language with English subtitles. Somehow I feel the dubbed voices take away the natural feel (and at times make it sound comical).

But no choice if the movie is screened without subtitles. My cousin watched Ponniyin Selvan-1 in a cinema in Cochin and she was saying that it was hard to understand as there were no subtitles. She is now waiting for the Amazon Prime release.

However, plenty of people are not comfortable reading sub-titles and watching the movie same time. So they prefer dubbed movies.

Some of us become too comfortable. I always keep sub-titles turned on even for languages I understand, to ensure I don't miss out crucial dialogues.

While watching Kantara, I was continuously reading the subtitles and comparing the English translation to the Kannada dialogues. I had to force myself to ignore the subtitles after a while.

Better to wait for Malayalam dub version if the plan is to watch in theaters. Prithviraj has taken up doing the Malayalam dub release for it in Kerala and expect him to do a good job with the dubbing activities as he is a person who would pay attention to the smaller nuances and make sure it is translated well. No release date though.

I would give it a rating of 3 out of 5. Not outstanding, but not bad either. Shows how much deranged a man can become and how much length, he would go for retribution? Bindu panicker did a good job as seen in the second half. Not saying much as it would be spoilers.

My wife is in that category, hate reading through the subtitles. But she’s fluent in Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil, can understand Hindi, and a bit of Telugu as well. So that covers quite a bit of the language spectrum.

Oru Thekkan Thallu Case - Malayalam (Netflix)



On the face of it, this movie promised a lot. However, with a very narrow storyline, it could only deliver to a point. Enough to keep you entertained, though.

Great character depictions in the movie, with most folks being integral to the flow of the movie, including some of the village characters. Just like Thallumala this one too is focussed on folks fighting with each other - while the former has a more youth oriented treatment, this one is more village oriented and raw.

In such a scenario, you'd almost think the female characters are mere accompaniments, but no - they are quite integral to the plot.

Rating : 3/5

P.S. : Could have done better if the movie wasn't as drawn out and atleast an hour shorter.

Very unlikely it will launch in Bangalore. Will go for Hindi version, which is released today.
