Re: The Cricket Thread

Credit to the NZ team for givng a tough fight in the series. They were much better than the listless Aussies! Thought NZ had the game covered till Latham got himself run out. The T20 series should be exciting.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Oh yes, fantastic series but our middle order still looks dicey. I hope the T20 series is equally competitive, we are yet to beat NZ in a T20 international in 5 attempts.

Probably that is why the powers-to-be decided to give us 3 attempts at getting that elusive vistory.
It is always good to see a competitive NZ side (the same for WI)

Re: The Cricket Thread

So Nehraji has retired! Not really a legend but he was a decent bowler. Was surprised he lasted this long considering the number of surgeries he's had. Still remember his spell in Durban against England in 2003 World Cup. Also, he was the fastest bowler once upon a time, remember him touching 149km/hr back then.

Re: The Cricket Thread

He's got all this adulation not only because of his record, but because he was always an honest trier and good with his skills. Like a Dravid in some sense.

I will not miss him coz he was not around that much anyway...

I'm surprised you compared him with Dravid who is perhaps a legend with a superior record, but was always overshadowed by a more flashy Tendulkar!
Nehra doesn't really have that phenomenal a record as he did not play as many games since he was injury prone. It was kind on the part of BCCI to give him a farewell game. But for a moment yesterday, I wondered if he really did deserve such a farewell. Some other retired players like Zaheer & Sehwag would feel hard done by!

Agree, Nehra has 245 international wickets and 235 international runs across the 3 formats. He was an excellent T20 bowler. Fitting that BCCI gave him a choice of game and venue to retire. Guess he will continue to play a few more IPL seasons.

Definitely cannot be compared with Rahul Dravid. Rahul could have walked into any international team.

Re: The Cricket Thread

It's not a direct comparison on skills or contribution to the game. All I wanted to say that Nehra is known as an honest trier, much like Dravid. And that is why he got the farewell that he did. Contribution wise, he hasn't done much to deserve all of this.

No, he's given up playing in the IPL. He is only open to a coaching / mentoring role.

Re: The Cricket Thread

Nehra got the farewell cos he decided to go on his own terms. While Zak and Viru kept trying for comebacks and when they finally decided to retire they were no longer part of the team while nehra was involved in the t20 set up. Anyways, was fun seeing him getting a goodbye lap around kotla and we managed to finally win one against NZ.

Re: The Cricket Thread

The best memory for me of Ashish Nehra is when he abused Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni for letting a catch go between them (keeper and slip). It could have been against Pakistan, I am not sure.
Not worried about abusing the captain

Re: The Cricket Thread

Cricket (ers) and cars have an undying bond between them. Sponsors often put up their latest offerings on display during international games. We have known of many cricketers being rewarded with cars both on and off the field. A few of them even endorse certain brands. On the forum itself, we have a thread dedicated to the discussion of cricketers' cars.

But a very bizarre incident that occurred during a Ranji trophy match being played in Delhi has not only taken the relationship to an altogether different plane but has also left the organisers red faced.

An excerpt:

Quote:
On Friday, the Air Force ground in Palam saw a man driving his car onto the pitch in what can be termed as a major security breach during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as players from both the sides along with officials were left dumbfounded...

At around 4:40 pm, 20 minutes from close of play, a silver grey Wagon R suddenly drove onto the field of play with Uttar Pradesh batting in their second innings. The man, who identified himself as Girish Sharma, tried to swerve his car twice on the 22-yard strip before stopping...
The man who drove the car was allegedly inebriated, reports NDTV.

Re: The Cricket Thread

India losing the toss and batting first against Sri Lanka today on a green pitch finished the day at 17/3 in overcast conditions before rain and bad light saved them further hiding.

Same old story. We just cannot compete on bowling friendly conditions, pace or spin. Brace yourselves for whitewashes in South Africa and England come early-mid 2018.

Apart from a few venues, most pitches in SA & Australia are not as bouncy as they used to be! If our batsman apply themselves, they can succeed. Offcourse, we would be relying very heavily on Virat as usual. I don't think SA is going to give us green tops later this year as that could backfire on them as we have a potent pace attack now.
Btw,I'm surprised why Virat hasn't been rested in this entire series.

Every team gets exposed in seam and spin friendly conditions. Nothing extraordinary with our team. No matter if you are world no.1 batsman you can get out to good balls and Rahul, kohli got real great ones. Even SL will struggle badly on this pitch. I am actually enjoying this tussle otherwise would have been a one sided boring match again.

Eagerly waiting for those tours. Hope they serve juicy decks. Our flat track bullies need a flogging. Unfortunately the malaise is not limited to our team.
