Worse, could be the ones that brag about doing say, 140's and 150's on the Chennai Bangalore roads and some who say, perhaps touch 200's on this road in this car etc.,

The fact that these guys are all well to say they did so means they did the deed in safety I guess. But how do one know his limits if not pushed? I for one was scared of highway driving in 2000-01 and the max I might have driven is 200 km in one stretch. Now I drive non stop from Bangalore to Pune covering 860 kms in under 12 hours. It is when I see some one who has done such trips, ask myself why not me? Of course with all the safety factored in. I see such posts give confidence to the readers to get the scare out of their mind. After all that they would still have to use the common sense to know when to stop and the safety limits.

The highest I have driven is Goa-Pune-Bangalore - @1300 kms starting from Goa by 10:30 AM,arrival in Pune by 6:30, Departure from Pune by 7:00 PM and arrival in Bangalore by 12:00 noon the next day with a four hour nap in the car itself at Belgaum.

I do share the concerns of prasadka.

I'm comfortable driving at around 80-90 kph on the highways. Take a break every 60 - 90 mins. The max I cover without a break would be 120 km. That's what I'm comfortable with.

Mine is when I drove solo from Chennai - Trivandrum; started driving at 8:00 PM, somewhere around 9:00 AM next day morning, I was in the outskirts of Madurai toward Tirunelveli; it must've been 500+ Kms.

I usually do Chennai/Krishnagiri in non stop, say about 230+ Kms; the recent being from Pallikonda-Bangalore about the same distance.

I'm waiting to do a Chennai-Mumbai solo/with family to challenge my own limit.

The maximum time I will spend at the wheel at a stretch is 3 hours, irrespective of the distance covered. I take a break for a while, even though I feel I could carry on for some more time. Fatigue is a dangerous thing.

I have done following single non-stop drives:
Guruvayur to Parassini (stopped just to give a break for the ladies as they started showing discomfort) - distance about 235kms but due to traffic the time taken about
4.5hours)

Next, Chennai (Hotel Shan Royal) to Krishnagiri (actually gone even after krishnagiri till we find a hotel for breakfast - so probably about 10/15 kms after krishnagiri). Started 6.15 in the morning and reached there at 9.05am.

Oh!!! God, I almost forgot another trip of mine that I did in 2007. Hosur to Chennai (distance of 296 Kms on ODO) non stop in 3.5 half hours. Those were the days when I used to drive like a maniac/moron or call me whatever.

PS - Thanks @Nairrk, somehow I was able to recall this trip due to your post (Shanroyal)

Did my second non-stop ( meaning no night halt ) Hyderabad - Calicut drive ( around 930 km ) a few days back, this time Solo. ( All other trips except for the two are with breaks either in Bangalore or in Mysore )

Started off at 2.50 am From Secunderabad.

Hit NH7 at around 3.15 am or so.

First break at 5.50 am, at 234 km, a little beyond Kurnool . For about 15 min

Second break at 7.40 am, at 348 km, a little before Ananthapur. for about 5 min ( pee break )

Third break at 9.30 am, at 474 km, a few km before Karnataka border. A light snack break. 10 min. ( some biscuits, bread, juice etc. Had them with me in the car)

Touched Hebbal flyover at 10.50 am

Fourth break at 11.15, at 575km, McDonalds on Tumkur Rd. A Burger for a late breakfast. 25 minutes break.

Took the NiCE road to get to Mysore Road. Hit Mysore road at around 12.15 or so.

Passed mysore at 2.30. Passed through the town.

Fifth break at 3.30 pm, at 778 km, at Gundlupet CCD. a 25 min break for Coffee and a small sandwich.

7.30 pm - final destination, 932 km, Mavoor Near Calicut. ( I think I took a leak break somewhere in between, forgot to note it down.. )

On Return, I had the family with me, and we broke the journey at Mysore. Started From Mysore at 6.30 am, and reached Secunderabad at around 7.00 pm with decent breaks in between for breakfast, lunch etc.

The roads ( at least the NHs ) are getting better and better, and if we have more amenities along the way as well, Long distance driving will be more and more practical as an option.

--------

I usually try to follow the 2.5 to 3 hrs drive + at least 15 min break formula, and it helps a great deal in keeping fatigue down.

Non stop rides

In March 2007, I did 185 km in 4 hours on my HH Splendor around Bangalore outskirts. The occassion was inviting relatives to my sister's wedding. In April 2008, I did a ride Bangalore-Vellore-Bangalore with a break of 30 min under 7 hours on my Suzuki ZEUS, the occassion I wanted to do a long ride. In March 2009, I covered 468km in 8 hours; Hassan-Dharmasthala-Bangalore with a break of 1 hour in between on my HH Hunk. Its always risky doing long rides on two wheelers, but it is very exciting at the same time to do it alone. I am planning to buy a Bullet 350 classic shortly and my dream ride will be to NE India. Any inputs for my dream ride is always welcome.

In September 2009, did a 500 miles (800 kms) from Boston to Niagara Falls in 9 hours flat in a Pontiac G5 (2 door). I think we took just 3 small breaks in between.
