re: Mahindra XUV500 niggles & solutions

Hi
Been away, checking the forum after quite some time. Length of this thread is moving at a blistering pace, was hoping to see a bit of slow down. Nevertheless, been through with the second service at 8500 kms at Ms Speedlinks, Panchkula. First the defects removed during servicing:-
- Brake pads changed - sound gone, brakes feel a little more firm.
- Ah - thats all
Now defects which could not be removed:-
- Whole of central console went bust a couple of days ago after a mild thump in the speakers while playing a cd, no audio, wx, menu etc available. ASC had no idea of repair, so sent off to Nippon ASC at Chandigarh. Guys have been trying hard to replace one component after the other, no success. Now they have started changing wires, next set of ripoffs planned on saturday, keeping my fingers crossed.
-Given a 'goli' by RM that it is possible to focus the lens in projector lamps, guys have adjusted the lights upwards at the top stop, would need readjusting.
-All the creaking, jingles and other noises remain as it is beyond my patience to keep the car under repair for more than a day.

Cheers

Oh now you're scaring me... Why is that 'bold'?
It's like Sir Humpfrey Appelby advising insertion of 'bold' and 'courageous' into any proposal that needs to be shot down

the HIDs are P8 brand, 4300k. Unfortunately work kept me away when this job was done, so i don't know much about what exactly was done.

How about putting the low-beam blubs (that you replaced with HID) in the fog-lamps?
Hmmm, now that's a good idea... I'll see if that can be done the next time I visit.
But do you think it's got to do with the power of the bulb more than the positioning of the foglamp?

So how much did it cost?

I think so. The wattage of the fog lamp bulbs are much lower. Having said that, I don't know if putting in a higher wattage bulb will immediately bring in more illumination. It may just do nothing (that is the bulbs will glow dimmer than they can) or even end up blowing a fuse. You will have to try it out to see how it turns up. Here you will have to hope that the wires used across the board are all of same quality and that the fog lamp wires are not any thinner than the ones that carry current to the headlamps, which may not be the case.

The price that was quoted to me was 10k and some change. Have still to negotiate the final cost and pay him

The other thing I wonder about the fog lamps is that for the Scorpio they had an adjuster so that the throw of the light could be set for near or far. I don't know if there is such an adjuster for the XUV. If it is then it might be worth upgrading the foglamps [even changing the wiring if needed] to illuminate the dark shadow between the projector's beam and the car.

Also some updated on the issues i was facing
1. The left wiper had left a deep impression on the glass. In the service the glass has been replaced and a new designed wipers (as per Rm) have been provided
2. Break pads were changed, since then have not heard any break noise
3. Front right side windows used to rattle when half opened. The motor was changed and glass feels better now without any noise

Thanks to my manager Mr Khalid at the Bhasin motors mathura road delhi, who had has his fair share of scoldings from me, the car feels far better now

Why don't you take up the matter with M&M customer service requesting that in view of less running of the car your 2nd service should be deferred without affecting warranty? Logical requests like this may not be turned down by M&M.
I have just given my XUV for second service (10000 km). The RM told they will not be changing oil in this service, only wheel rotation / alignment etc. Oil change was done at 5000 and now will be done at 20000, I think.

For the dipper, I was suggested to go in for HIDs, and boy did that make a difference!
The difference is stark and the roads are bright and sunny again!

I'm still wondering what to do about the fog lamps though. It's not really worth putting in another 8-10k for the fog lamps. And I don't think just upsizing the bulbs is goinng to help either. Any other solutions?
I have a question: Is HID use legal? Can a cop fine me for using HID?

Other than this, some update on the past issues:

1. Brakes noise: I had got brakes noise within 200km of driving after I got my vehicle. Pads were changed. But the noise came back again within 300km of driving. This time, both discs and pads were changed. The noise took longer to come back about 1000 km of driving. Then pads were changed to new ones (I am not sure 2 / 3 generation). Now the noise took many thousand km to come back, but come back it did. Now I have told my RM to change both disc and pad. May be he will and the noise will be gone for now. But now I am worried that this will basically continue till the warranty runs out. And then????? I will have to get the brake pads changed regularly AT MY OWN EXPENSE? That's scary. I just don't know whether Mahindra will be able to provide a permanent fix or not!
2. Passenger wiper making marks on the wind screen: Have reported this to RM and told him I want to see both wind screen and wipers in good condition when the vehicle is returned from service. Let's see!
3. Jerky acceleration between 1500 to 1800 rpm band, more pronounced in 2 and 3 gear. This does not happen all the time, but does happen often and the frequency of occurrence has been increasing with time. I had not been able to demonstrate this problem last time when I went to the service center. I have reported it again now. Let's see if it gets reproduced this time. To me it appears to be a problem with the control system of the turbo by-pass valve. It is oscillating under certain conditions (the system is not able to settle down at one value - It decides to open the valve, opens it too much, then tries to close it, closes it too far ..... and the cycle just goes on). It is a classic problem of poor calibration of a closed loop control system, technically called the "PID" control loop. But I have a doubt whether I will be able to demonstrate it to the technician, and if so, whether he will be able to understand the issue!

There have been other minor issues like 3 times in the 8 months of ownership, the A/C turned on by itself. All three times this happened around the same spot. The "Auto" button was off, A/C was off, only fan was running. And all of a sudden, the A/C turned on by itself. I suspect that some high-tension wires around that spot have something to do with it (Electromagnetic Interference).

Also, the CD mechanism is very poor quality. Many times the CD got stuck simply when I accelerated hard in 2 gear on a smooth highway! I am now mostly using the USB, which is working fine for me.

I am also now constantly worried about the clutch failure. Mine is Jan 2012 make. The thing is, I will always be worried now taking my family on a long trip.

But so far I am overall happy with my choice. I picked W6 precisely because I was expecting issues with electronics gadgets and I was prepared for that. Brakes noise is the only serious grouse I have. I think as many people commented earlier, if you have 8 lakh more to spend for quality, you can go for fortuner. But otherwise, there is hardly any better choice in this price segment.

Jerky acceleration : This is worrisome. Though many types of defects have been reported by XUV-owners, very few engine defects have come to light. In view of what has now been reported (and also logically analyzed) by hi_on_torque, other XUV-owners need to watch out for similar phenomenon in their cars and share their findings.

Fear of clutch failure : This is a very legitimate apprehension, considering that your XUV is from one of the earliest batches. There have been many reported (1 reported = 50 unreported??) catastrophic failures of clutch in XUV's from the initial batches. If I were in your place, I'd have demanded replacement of my complete clutch assembly. IMHO, all owners of XUV's from the initial batches should get their clutch replaced under warranty because it is dangerous to drive these vehicles on the highways with the sword of Damocles (or should I say 'Sword of Mahindra'?) hanging over their heads.

Was this done at Mahindra? Again does it voids warranty in any sense? Does it affect the headlight assembly, as it is known that use of high powered one leads to early fading of lights. Also is it legal?

BTW, Till now I found the lights adequate, Yeah the projected lamp's throw is on the shorter side, but High beam is pretty satisfactory. Let us see how it performs under heavy rain?

True, I thought of that. But the problem is, what is the guarantee that the replaced one will be any better? What if the clutch was not going to fail as such, but poor workmanship in this replacement work creates a potential for failure? And then this repair requires dis-assembling almost everything in the engine bay, and there is a chance that some poor workmanship could create some other problem! All said and done, if I had an assurance that this replacement would eliminate the risk of the problem recurring, I sure would have pushed hard for that. But my experience with the brakes issue is not so re-assuring of that. This is really a difficult choice.

For now, I simply requested my RM to do a check and see if he notices any symptoms that indicate such a possibility.

I can appreciate your dilemma. It is certainly a difficult choice for you, especially in view of the extremely frustrating experience you had with the brakes.

I think we need to know why some XUV clutches had catastrophic failures and what was Mahindra's solution. Were the entire clutch assemblies replaced by a modified design or only certain defective components replaced?

If the clutch assembly being installed in the newer batches is indeed different / modified, then it makes sense to have it replaced proactively under warranty because a company like M&M does not yet have either the decency or the guts to announce a recall.

Incidentally, is the warranty duration 2 years or 3? AFAIK, there is no option of buying extended warranty.

You can say that again.

About the clutch, there was an old post that I am not able to find now (70 pages!) that said that along with the slave cylinder, the clutch plates were also replaced since there is a new design. But sadly, as you said, Mahindra does not seem to be inclined to pro-actively replace all suspect parts. They want to do it only when there is a failure.

The standard warranty is 2 years / 65000 km. But I was given an additional 1 year unlimited km warranty by Sireesh Auto on their own at the time of vehicle delivery. At least that means I am safe until another 2 years 4 months from the cost of replacement of faulty parts. But there is nothing to save me from the botheration of the repeated need of going to the service station and having to manage without my vehicle everytime that happens.

If you see the earlier posts, I don't think anybody reported burnt clutch plates. The issue was only with the control mechanisms, but for some unexplained/ununderstood reasons all aggregates pertaining to the system were replaced. I have had the occasions to see two burnt clutch plates in the ASCs, system failure didn't seem to be the cause, and ASC replaced only one of them under warranty and for the other the guy had to shell out 10k.

By the way, during the II free service I insisted on getting the wheel balancing and alignment checks done, the car was pulling mildly to the left and had wobbly ride beyond 120km/h. I had to shell out 1k, as they are not part of the schedule for second service. So there are limits of warranty.

Third year warranty with unlimited kms has been authorised for all XUVs, so your ASC is not doing any favour. A certificate to this effect is being given by M&M thru your ASC. All prospective owners may please note.

If you adjust the fog lamp it is very much better.
You need open the plastic cladding in the wheel arch, then there is a screw on the lamp housing that can adjust the throw of the light. - Don't know why it is not done properly in the first place!

Interesting! That goes on my list of to do @ 5k service. Thanks. Gerardfdz, did you by any chance speak to him about up-sizing the fog lamp and how much of a difference that would make?

Don't feel the need at the moment. Still experimenting with the adjustments of the main head lights.
With HID do the triangle(s) disappear?
Noticed a funny thing! The Owners manual says the high beam is the centre lamp and low beam the inner most! Whereas it is the other way around!
Also there are three adjusting screws/points Two for the High beam- Left-right, and Up-down. What about for the low beam? any idea?
