Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

^^ I feel your battery would be able to pull through this winter season, I also had a similar experience w.r.t one of the cells in the older battery. I finally changed my car's battery when the cranks started getting stuck on some occasions.

Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

The OEM Amaron on the Baleno Vxi lasted 40000 kms and close to 5 years. Majority of the driving involved short trips inside the city with frequent start / stop.

The first symptom of the battery running on its last leg unfortunately popped up mid-way on a picnic (as we mallus term for a short family day outing). We had been enjoying the picnic spot snacking inside the car with a dash of the local FM on the radio. Happy with playing hero for the picnic (I was the one who took the whole family), turned the key to get back home only to be shocked to hear nothing happen. As embarrassing as it can get, the ladies had to push the car to start. Still, took a few more risks after that, but luckily escaped total embarrassment at any traffic lights.

I wanted to put a Bosch now. Went to the Bosch mechanic and he suggested showing a starter mechanic as there were no issues on cold starts. The starter mechanic straight away refused to check the issue as he was damn sure that battery need to be changed by 4 years. Went in and changed to a Bosch with 1.5 year warranty.

Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

There's enough been said on the forums about the Swift-D OEM battery.
Like other owners, I woke up one morning to hear the dreaded chug-a-chug-chug of the battery on it's last legs almost EXACTLY three years after I'd bought the car.

i10 1.2 Sportz's OEm Exide Freedom lasted 2 years and 10 months. The car was running on high wattage headlamps and next to regular battery checkups except while servicing.

Replaced with Bosch S5

Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

Yesterday morning i started my getz crdi and found no signs of a weak battery. I was stunned to see it dead in the evening. OEM battery lasted for 3 years and 10 months. Bought a new Exide Matrix which is sealed for life and has 5 years warranty (with depreciation conditions). Hyundai dealer quoted 10K for a new exide battery but i bought it from a local dealer for 8.2K after exchange of old one.

How can a battery die without showing its age? Dealer could not answer properly.

^^^It does happen, but its rare. Bad quality I'd say... else normally its expected to die gradually. Personally experienced sudden deaths with 2 fairly new Exides.

@Djay, I am not surprised with the OE battery, but I am surprised with the cost of the new battery. I feel even 8.2k is high. I had got a Bosch Silver 2 years back for my Sumo, and I thought it was more expensive than other brands. Sealed/VRLA, and 75Ah (IIRC).

Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

My OEM exide battery(i10 sportz bought in Nov 2008) lasted 3 years and 4 months. Once had parked on the road side and kept the AC running with ignition off for about 30 mins! After this car refused to start. Called Hyundai on road assistance. They took about 30 mins to come. When they tried, car started!

They said cold start would work but i should be expecting failures anytime and advised replacement. Got Exide Matrix sealed for Life battery at the cost of about 6100. Exchanged with Old battery but they didnt give any discount on the new one

I was thinking old battery is worthless. Is it so? How much could i have expected?

Re: OEM car battery life - How long did your OE battery last?

The Exide on my U-VA went on without a blink from Apr'08 till the time I sold it in Oct'11 and is still going strong with the 2nd owner. Till the time I sold it, the car had 42k kms on the ODO.

Never ever did the battery miss a start.

Our U-VA LT's battery lasted for exact 4 years (Feb 2008 to March 2012). This is after using JBL amp and Bass tube through out the ownership. Replaced with same battery for R. 4600/-

Cheers!

During the recent service the mechanic mentioned that one cell in the battery is weak. Cranking (on a cold start with ambient temperatures of 12-13 deg C) takes a little effort now, but I reckon that it should be good to last through this winter.

Static volt reading on the battery with a multi-meter shows 12.35 volts down from 12.53 volts when the car was at 30,000 kms.
Update: The car was left idle for about five weeks without the -ve terminal being disconnected. Last Thursday, I started the car and with some effort it roared to life. However in the evening on the return drive from work, the cranking was noticeably heavier with more effort being needed. Went home and checked the static volt reading and it read 12.2 volts.

Removed the battery and gave it to a local guy for a recharge for 24 hours and then refitted it. Static reading after the charge had jumped to 12.7 volts and the guy said the battery will be good enough for a few months more so long as I drove the car regularly.

Will wait till the onset of winter before I change the battery.

Even if you consider October month as onset of winter then it is 6 months away and don't take chances with a weak battery for this long period. You may suffer a breakdown on a long trip!

Get it replaced ASAP.
