Rear brake shoes live much longer life than the front, especially in cars without ABS and EBD. This is true for most of the cars.

In fact for my WagonR, I changed the rear shoes only after 2.2L.Km.

Does changing it earlier (80k-100k or 8-10 years) yield more stopping power?

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Sent my 2008 Mercedes E280CDI for service recently. The advisor told me that the front brakes were worn out and needed replacement. He quoted 15k for the pads and 25k for the disc. I checked at some other auto part spares shops and the same thing is available for half the price. Is it ok if get the brake work done outside the authorised service centre? Will it create any issues? I have a reliable mechanic who says he can do the job.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Happened to change the front discs of my car (left and right). Of course, pads also new. Does anyone know if a wheel alignment is needed now?

Not needed IMHO, since no steering component was touched.

I guessed so, not touched the suspension parts as well.

Another follow up question:

I get a grinding noise now as the wheel rotates, and it subsides as the car picks up speed. But when again the brake is applied, it starts again. The sound increases as the brake pedal is pressed.

Very likely due to the new disc and pads that there is no enough clearance between them. Is it that because they are new and will go off as they both "bed in" and gets some gap in between?

Was the opposite for me with my Baleno1.6 where the front disk pads still had few thousand kms life left when it was changed the first and only time at around 1lakh kms IIRC.
But the rear brake shoes were changed atleast twice during the same 15year period.

Were the previous disc pads totally gone before you replaced them ? If so, they could have scored the rotors leading to this noise ?

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

I have a Grand i10 petrol AT (2015) with 29,000 kms on the odo.

The car has been used only for city driving.

Recently, the brakes have become extra sensitive. Very little pressure on the brake and the car brakes very hard as if emergency brakes were applied.

The pedal does not sink all the way.

Can someone help me please?

Check out the master cylinder assembly. Could be a damaged seal or "O" ring. Also could be a problem with the servo assist.

My Skoda Rapid has done 70k kms approximately and I get a grinding noise when I apply brakes. The front left wheel has oil marks which looks like coming from brakes. I checked with local Bosch mechanic and he suggested changing of discs as well as pads, both wheels. Total cost 6400.

As far as I can remember, pads were changed sometime back. Not sure.

Any suggestions on this?

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

For my Lexus IS250 my brake pads lasted about 20,000kms but that was till I took it to a track and more or less cooked them there. So I just swapped over to Akebono pads + DBA AUS T2 Rotors.

My Lexus IS200 it's been 10,000kms but I've been after Dixcel rotors + Project MU discs for ages. So either way those are being changed once they arrive from Japan

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

I have recently changed my disc brake and disc pads as well, at 30K kms.
However, I've recently noticed my brakes feel tight. It doesn't seem as free as before, having an automatic car, the speed without touching brake and accelerator feels slower than before.

Any reason why i might be feeling this? Or any past experience for front disc brakes?
I have arranged for a check-up of the brakes from Honda, hoping to have some sort of an answer.

Any recommendations would be welcome!

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

I just replaced the brake pad of my Baleno AT at 15K kilometer. The brake pad had only couple of mm left. I was also hearing very light rubbing noise which was earlier root caused to brake pad and the disk. Disk was pretty OK except for the rust; had to do some skimming in lathe as advised by SA.

Wondering whether 15K is a bit too early for brake pad change. I usually drive in city/suburbs where I end up braking every few hundred meter due to a pothole or a speed breaker. Also, the car being one with CVT, I used to rely on brakes instead of engine braking while I used to go down ghat roads; 10-15KM at a time.

Any advice?

80k km on Kona Electric. No signs of wear on the rear brake pads. Most of the heavylifting is done by regenerative braking.
