Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

2012 Skoda Yeti

Front pads replaced @ 75k
Rears still had material left, but changed @ 90k service just to be on the safe side.

Rotors replaced @ 75k with Brembo ventilated just to try it out, OEM still lying in my store & good for a lot more.

Use brakes only to stop, modulate throttle and use the gearbox intelligently to control speed. Brake pads should not be consumables.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Switched over to Brembo brake pads on our i20 diesel after being fed up of the dust and the low life of the OEM brake pads.

I am on the first set and they have lasted 50K kms and have almost worn out . Maybe will last another 2000 kms.
Pros-
-----

Better braking than stock when heated up. Around 25% better bite than stock
Less brake dust

Cons
------

The pads have eaten through the rotor for lunch. So much that the rotors need to be replaced.

Next replacement pads will be from Mintex along with a fresh set of rotors!

It wasn't the disc pads - issue was with the Brake Master Cylinder that needs replacement.

Agree. And that's more or less how I do it too - the OE pads on my 2005 Baleno still good at 97K kms attesting this.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

My Ford Fiesta Classic is due for a brake pad replacement.
It has done 43000 kms till date.

I realized on a recent Goa trip that the car could have used better brakes esp. in the ghat sections. It was pretty evident under sudden braking, thanks to the roads!! This was with just 2 and a half on board.
I drove very slow when my friend's family joined us in Goa.

Question:
Should I go for the OEM Ford brake pads? I have really nothing against them - OR
Should I go for the Brembo disc pads?

The OEM have actually started shuddering over the last 4k kms. So keen on knowing if Brembo would be a better upgrade to brakes.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

The brake pads of my SX4 were replaced by MASS at 30,000 km without telling me. I did not believe they needed replacement at 30k.

After I started to look after the car myself, I replaced the brake pads and the shoes at 95,000 km.

I took the old shoes, got the brake lining removed and new lining installed on the same. So the rear shoes for the next replacement are ready.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Car : Verna 4S AT
Model Year : 2015
Brake Pads replaced at : 40K kms
Where : Hyundai Service
Cost : 2.5K

Since mine is an AT, cannot make use of engine braking using clutch. The load on brakes is high.

In all probability, they didn't need replacement at 30K kms. The thugs at MASS asked me also to replace disc pads at the 30K km service of my Baleno sedan. Guess what ? The odo is at 98000kms now & the OE pads are still good.

Is this reliable like new shoes ? I mean how good is the glue job compared to factory quality ?

I got this done from a firm, which specialises in clutch and brake linings. Their customers are automotive garages, fleet operators as well as the industry (for clutches and brakes in cranes and machinery).

I have used their liners in the industry as well as for my scooters. No problems so far.

The OE shoes of SX4 have pasted liners whereas this firm has rivetted the new liners on the old shoes. So I am not worried about the liner slipping off the shoe. The rivetting appears to have been done with proper workmanship. The head of the rivets is 2 mm deep inside the 4 mm thick liner. My old OE pasted liners too had worn only 2 mm till getting due for replacement.

Ok, sounds good. Rivets should hold the liners in place better than glue, I would think.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

The Brembo brake pads (Red) on our i20 front lasted 55K km. They still had some 5K life left in them. I had to discard them because the rotors had worn out to the minimum thickness and had a lot of grooves in them!

Replaced the rotors and put in a new set of Mintex brake pads. Lets see how long these last

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Had OEM Brake pads on my i20 replaced at 52K Km. Started hearing a metallic scraping noise which is due to disc rubbing against ware indicator.
Here brake pads come with ware indicator, however in India during service the technician would check for ware and recommend changes. Not sure if any of the present cars come with pads which have ware indicators.

Re: What was the average life of your car's brake pads?

Front brake-pads on Alto Lxi changed at 70K. I think my sedate (well, mostly ) driving should have made it last at least a 100K, but no complaints since it cost me less than 1000 Rs.

Did you feel any drop in braking ability, leading to getting the pads changed before they were due for change ?

Usually the mechanic can tell how good (or bad) the pads are, by visual inspection even without removing the wheel.

No symptoms, I had gone in for a 'damper set' replacement for the front wheels. When the wheels were removed, found out that one pad from one of the wheels had hardly 1 mm material left. The others were ok, but changed all because the pads for Maruti come as one full set for both the front wheels (4 pads).
