If you are switching to synthetic be sure you are present while they change the oil.

My friend got cheated by a MASS outlet in Palakkad, KL where they charged him for fully synthetic oil in his Swift VDi (Around 950/- per litre i think) but later their mechanic confirmed that they don't stock fully synthetic diesel engine oil & it seems very illogical that somebody went out and purchased fully synthetic oil just for him.

Castrol Engine Oil for Indica Vista Quadrajet

Hi All,

I had taken my Indica Vista Quadrajet for service at Bosh Car Service near Hoodi Circle in Bangalore last Saturday and had changed engine oil during the service. They used Castrol Magnatec. By the looks i felt that Service engineer was also not very confident when i asked if this can be used for diesel cars? Can any one please confirm that Castrol Magnatec is used for diesel engines? I checked on the packing and no where its mentioned if its for diesel engine or petrol engine. I am a little worried if I have used wrong engine oil for my car.

I have done a little over 250 kms and I didn't find any issues.

Re: Castrol Engine Oil for Indica Vista Quadrajet

Generally this oil Castrol Magnatec is used for petrol engines and its a very good oil for petrol engines.
As far as my knowledge goes, this should not be used in Diesel engines. Castrol has got a specific good diesel oil in CH/CI named GTX Diesel ( apart from the standard GTD variant).

Just my bit...let experts comment.

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

Hey guys, my fathers Swift VDi has covered 15000kms till date and is due for an oil change. We had been using mineral oil provided by maruti till now. Should we go for mineral oil or semi-synthetic? We are not going to keep the car for more than 50000 kms, so I guess fully synthetic oil would not be justified. We were wondering which oil brand to go for? Also, it would be appreciated if you could point out the advantages of the typr and brand you suggest.

PS: please quote my post when replying so that I get informed when you reply to my question.

Either use a mineral oil or use a synthetic IMO , not a big fan of semi-synthetics . Synthetics makes a lot of difference in the enhancing the smoothness of the engine . Swift recommends 10W/40 if i am not mistaken so as long as you get a synthetic from Castrol / Mobil / Shell of that spec or better you should be fine. I use Mobil for my diesel car and its fairly good .
When you are changing from mineral to synthetic , its advisable to flush the compartment out - do not use top-up method

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

^^ Also please remember to change the oil filter on every engine oil change. This is a must. Swift VDi has a Fiat MJD engine and Fiat recommends Selenia WR oil for Linea/Punto. This can be one more option too...

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

Have Been using Castrol Magnetec,SAE 5W-30 for 10+ months in my santro,
I would say my car runs better than those normal engine oils days.

However Now I am needing to change the engine oil again, its been 10months of car running, don't remember the ODO readings but recently i had my mechanic do a check and he advised "Oil is OK, but better to be changed."

can someone confirm any better option available ?
Magnatec again or total one, don't remember its full details.

Experts, Please advice.

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

I just filled in Castrol Magnatec 10-40W during the 3rd free service of my Gypsy yesterday. For the 20km ride home, I felt better pick up and acceleration and less vibrations/harmonics from the engine. Also the accelerator pedal appears to have become very soft requiring 40% less pressure from the foot and I dont recall seeing the accel cable being lubricated (although it is supposed to be in 3rd service). Remember this is a Gypsy with no soft pedals for clutch or accelerator (my brakes have better feel than the new Wagon-R though). Now the Accelerator pedal feel is almost comparable to a family car.

So I am happy. Now to observe when the engine note changes to a drier somewhat hoarse, strained and ragged sound - after 5k or 9k, before deciding when to change the oil. Based on engine note, My previous two engine oil replacements provided the smoothness benefit only for less than 4.5k Kms.

If it performs for 9 to 10K it is certainly worth at 1/3rd the price of fully synthetic oils. Even then I can replace at every 5K and still save about 2K INR per 10K kms over fully synthetic oils with the added benefit of more frequent fresh oil change.

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

I have been using Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 in my Zen for the last 9 years, almost. The first oil change my car had was at about 700 kms, after a month of purchase with MGO- Servo. Don't remember the grade & it was done by MASS. That was sometime in 2003. After this, I have been using Castrol Magnatec. Since I have been using this oil almost from the beginning (after running in), I don't think I will be able to point out any difference between normal mineral oil & magnatec. My main reason for shifting to magnatec was that my car has a pretty low running. So, as claimed by Castrol, to safeguard the engine from initial wear & tear, I chose Magnatec. The car has done only 26K kms in all these years but the engine shows no signs of ageing due to time. I have some faith in Magnatec & I found it to be smoother than the Servo when I shifted years back. Also, the engine sounded a tad quieter with it. But that was a comparison made 10 years ago, to be honest.

I change oils anywhere between 5000-6000 Kms or 15-18 months, whichever earlier. This time, my car has done about 7000 kms since last fill, hence due for a change. Bought a 3L pack for 1,170/- (print price- 1188, pkd - 05/12).
The car drinks 3.3 ltrs, so the extra 300 ml will come from my previous stock of 3 ltr canister which I bought during my last change as I was not able to get a 4ltr can. (I bought 2X3 ltrs can last time)

BTW, the car has always been serviced at a MASS, & they have never denied/ resisted filling Magnatec, even when it was under warranty.

Regards,
Saket

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

I've been advised by the service centre that they'll replace the oil as it's my car's 2nd free service and it has done about 8000kms. They're charging me a 3K for oil and 700 for oil filter. Is it the right price?

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

Castrol GTX is perhaps used by most dealer operated MASS in eastern India. Standalone MASS will devour your vehicle. They use all wrong grades of engine oil. So basically my experience tells me that you should purchase oil from the distributor. I will post a pic of GTX diesel that works fine in all Maruti Diesels. I have been using GTX in Ritz Diesel since the last 50000kms. The engine is super silent and super refined,

Re: Engine Oil- Castrol Magnatec..for Swift, Opel??

Some brief data about Magnatec and other Castrol products-
1. Magnatec Diesel 15w40 is not suitable for the Swift. It is an API-CF engine oil.
2. Castrol EDGE 5w40 is used as the only option for synthetic engine oil users here by MASS. So it must be suitable for the Swift.
3. No scientific proof about magnatec molecules sticking to the engine even after it is switched off.
4. At a private garage I noticed a Castrol branded MGDO bottle that the mechanic said had come directly from Maruti! I have no idea whether it was Magnatec or not. It looked like GTX because it was priced about Rs. 845-same as GTX.
5. For the swift diesel the best engine oils are the Mobil 1300 15w40 or the Mobil Delvac MX 15w40.
6. For the petrol Opel Astra/Corsa you can opt for the Magnatec 5w30. It is rated API SG+ and would suffice for the Opel engine. Otherwise shell 5w30 is a good choice.
7. Magnatec should be avoided for the Swift petrol. Shell 5w30 and Castrol GTX are good choices.
