This is great...after years of getting ripped off, some sensible synth pricing at last. Hope Mobil and Shell see the light. Please post the specs once you get them.

Hey Raccoon, I emailed TKM about the loose oil and the called me within 90 minutes on a Sunday (yesterday). The lady said the dealer would get back to me on this and thanked me for the positive feedback.

DSKT customer relationship manager called me this afternoon to explain that Toyota GMO would the recommended fill and no other. She said that I was free to use aftermarket oil but Toyota does not recommend it. Told her to have her technical manager jot that down in an email addressed to me. Yet to receive it.

Whatever may be the outcome, TKM and DSKT are fantastic with their response times. My next oil change is still several months away so I have some time to mull over my options.

Rgds,

Lol. Please tell me you're kidding.
The cheapest I've heard is Petronas and that was ~2400.
Even if he's got 3 year old stock, It can't be less than 2k for fully synthetic.

Now problem is that even he agreed that their products are hardly available at any retail shop... so he will have to arrange for them himself. Further he said, they are currently targetting garages and service centres for their products.

Unfortunately Delo 400 is available only in 10 litre cans (minimum). :( Now thats way more than I need! :( They do have many other products (like Delo Gold, etc), as he said... and they are available in smaller cans.

I asked him I need tech specs of their products and that their website for India isn't providing these details. He said he would email or courier me the details by tommorrow!
Go for the 10L Delo 400, seal the container and use it for your next fill, Delo 400 is the best value. They synth is excellent buy as well at Rs.1000 for 4L.

Gurus,

I needed suggestions about the motor oil grade & brand for my new Chevy Spark. The user manual specified oil is Elf 15w40 API SJ (GM has a tie-up with ELF) grade with the first change at 5K kms., and further every 10K kms. Now I happened to browse through an European Chevrolet Matiz version (2003) of the service manual which specifies 10W30/ 15W40 API SL Grade oil.
During the reassurance check-up (1k)- as oil change is recommended in team-bhp, asked the service advisor to change oil- he said it's not needed. Also he quoted a high price for the oil (Rs. 900 for 3.2L) so didn't get the oil changed. After confirming with the service manager about the service later- he said that the OE oil is semi-synthetic and doesn't need an oil change at 1000km.
Should I be filling the OE grade oil or shift to Total/ castrol for future oil changes. Also should I insist for a oil change now? the car has done 17XX kms and oil change is due at 5k? Please advise.

Well, if you change the oil, it will likely be benifical. Don't forget to change the oil filter when you do it.

You can just go to a good non-authorised garage and get the job done in front of you. There are many brands to choose from... and personally, Castrol would be my last choice! The Elf oil also might be a good option... no personal experience with it though.

Raccoon, thanks for the tip, got oil & filter changed from the service centre. GM has ELF GMO (Genuine motor oil) conforming to API SJ standards. I wonder why different API grades for the same car/ engine? Is SJ better or equivalent to SL?

SL should be better than SJ. But which oil is SL rated?

There is no real reason to use the Elf GMO... ESPECIALLY if its more expensive. You can use non-GMO Elf, as long as it meets the specifications.

The Oils from Total quartz series (semi synthetic & mineral) are API SL rated, also Shell Helix Super (mineral) is SL rated. Has anyone tried the Total Quartz semi synthetic range ie. Quartz 7000 series? They have 2 grades in that 10W40, 15W50. Don't know whether they have launched this in India? How does this oil compare to Castrol magnatec?

p.s: @ Raccoon- ELF GMO costed 600 bucks for a 3.25L can (custom made packing for GM cars).

Castrol Magnatec is NOT a fully synthetic oil. There are many other good brands to choose from.

Go for API SJ15W40 that would do for your car;MAK ELITE 15W40 is now SJ rated and is very good oil.Don't give it a pass just because it is from BPCL. Also if you lay your hands on some old stock, you might be able to save some cash as well.

Caltex: Cars

The product is Havoline Energy 5W-30 apparently fully synthetic and MRP is Rs.1184/- for 4 L can, distributor price would probably be inline with what Raccoon has posted.

I picked up Chevron Delo 15W-40 (5l+1l) meets/exceeds API CH-4 for Rs.1068/- y'day from a distributor. Chevron representatives are really prompt in replying to queries for information.
