Sorry to hear of the mishap of bolt shearing off.

In my post I had specified a "High Tensile Steel" bolt. It is true that most bolts are rolled for added strength, but a lot of bolts are also cut on the lathe. You have to follow the following steps
. The base material should be high tensile steel. Available easily from a specialist steel retailer.
. To add strength you can "case harden" the bolt either using induction heating or cyanide treatment.

Contrary to popular belief a lot of parts for high tech (aerospace and military included) industry are made in small dedicated machine shops.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

The original bolt that was broken off is attached here.

The area that is brazed is where it had broken off originally. I have brazed it so that I can retain it.

The bolt reads 12.9! Which according to most people is quite strong.

Now, the bolt we made was cut on a lathe and then hardened in oil.

The reason we think it sheared off was because the guy tried to strengthen/ harden it the original bolt's strength, which is way more than what the actual material could take and hence it became brittle and sheared off.

Learnt some metallurgy here and finally ordered an original bolt from Mercedes Benz of South Atlanta, who had one in stock.

Will update you on progress of the car.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Here's the Final (hopefully) list of parts that are getting replaced:

1) Two Intake Valves (not found yet) - any help is really appreciated. Part number 6060531101
2) Head Gasket
3) Bolt (left turn) for Fuel pump
4) Inlet Camshaft - bought from MB-specialist online. Awesome guys and very quick delivery. Highly recommend this website to fellow W124 owners
5) Timing Chain
6) Oil Seal over crank shaft

All injectors have been removed and re-conditioned by Bosch. Apparently one was completely closed

All the piston heads seem clean.

Request fellow bhpians for inputs on what other works I may consider doing whilst I am building my engine.

Shall post pictures soon.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

COntact numbers in your inbox; Best of luck

some of those parts will cost you the earth; Headlights you can get DEPO ones they are much cheaper than the BOSCH ones and are good quality [At least all the feedback on US forums say so]; however you will lose your headlight adjustments using the vaccum switch in your dashboard

What about bumpers; panels and all?? are they alright and worth repairing?

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hi guys

My car is still to hit the road!

Basically the engine has all been put together and FIP and all bits are back in place.

Problem: Vehicle cranks but does not start at all.

Have checked all timing related items. Seems like an Electrical issue.

There are 2~3 connections on top of the Fuel Pump. If anyone has or can point me to a E300 D - Engine wiring diagram I will really be obliged.

Can anyone help

Vehicle has been off the road for more than 2 months now!

I have the same E300 Diesel, have you checked the glow plug relay? The possible cause would be the glow plugs or the wiring harness. E300 Diesel has two wiring harness one for the glow plugs and other for the engine. Please put some pics of the engine, I would be able to help you out better... Also, is it giving white smoke on long cranking?

Curious to know what white smoke on cranking means. Could you please explain further?

Also, can anyone help me source a automatic transmission modulator for the E250D Automatic? I need the one for the first and second gears. It's a red coloured modulator. Even the part number would help.
Thanks.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hi all

Finally, after much fanfare and loads of trials and errors, we disconnected the vacuum stop line from the key to the FIP.

This did it. The vehicle finally starts and stays at idle. But vehicle does not stop if you turn the key off. The vacuum pipe needs to be re-connected to turn it off.

Now, I need to figure out the vacuum diagrams and check that. Vacuum pump seems to be in good order.

Any other inputs appreciated.

Viraat, Is your E250D a W124 or W210? Please PM me your VIN number. I will get you the part number and probably links of where you maybe able to order it on the internet.
