If you take the synthetic oil factor into consideration, the Amaze will be any day cheaper to maintain than the Dzire. Honda's specially designed oil which is low on friction is better than the normal mineral oil but at the same time much cheaper than the synthetic oil that Maruti recommends for its new vehicles.
My point is a Swift Diesel will be costlier to maintain than a Figo/Etios/Liva Diesel for 10,000 kms service due to the number of parts that have to be replaced during each service. The labour charge associated with each of these replacements and overhauls also adds up. The synthetic oil factor just adds to all these. When I travelled on an Etios taxi from Airport which covered 1 Lakh kms in 1.5 years, I discussed with him regarding the maintenance cost. He mentioned that it always ranges between 2,500 to 3,500 except once when he replaced his brake pads where it touched 5,000.
For Petrol vehicles, the difference is not very obvious because a cost difference of 1,000 odd is negligible.
One more point to add to the synthetic oil factor. After being very obvious that Maruti recommends synthetic oil for its DDiS engines, if something bad happens to the engine which was run on mineral oil, will Maruti respect the warranty ? Legally, they don't have to, because the customer has opted to chose his own oil. This is a plus for the Amaze here. They get a superior mineral oil and are not forced into using the expensive synthetic oil as well. Quote:

It is these examples that create a perception about a car being costly to own. Be it Maruti or any other brand. |
The AC filters were never used by Maruti initially. When Etios was released, it had the AC filter in it. Then Maruti suddenly released it as an accessory for the Swift and Dzire. Then, the cost was around 1,500/-. But, the Toyota Filter costed just around 350. It seems, someone sensed the blunder and corrected it later. Maybe, the old stock still sells for 1000 plus. I'm not too sure on it. Quote:

+1 to this point. Other manufacturers are far behind on this one factor. One manufacturer that's even remotely close is the Hyundai. But, I won't even have their vehicles in my list of probable buys thanks to the astronomical maintenance costs.
