Re: Azure Grey 2006 Maruti-Suzuki Swift VXi | Ownership Review

High Security Registration Plates

Placed order for them in November first week and got the appointment date on 23 November. Called up Abharan Motors Nittur to check if the plates had arrived on the appointment date but it did not, two days later I get a SMS that my plates have reached the dealer. Rang them up and they confirmed.

Took the Swift and made a stop at my sticker shop to collect a small transparent film and reached the dealership sharp at 9am since dad had to rush with the car for the day. I pasted the transparent film on the left portion of the windshield.

Joined the queue and observed as to how they were performing the work on other vehicles. I noticed that they were doing it in a hurry manner and sticking the windshield TRP( Third Registration Plate) with lots of air bubbles. I kindly asked them to hand me the TRP so I stuck it properly on the film that I stuck on the windshield.

So apparently this TPR consists of two stickers, one is the holographic text of the Number plate, Laser encoded numbers of the plates and your Date of registration and the other sticker is the background sticker which is blue for petrol and orange for diesels. The guy just handed the 1st part of the sticker and not the background blue sticker. When questioned he mentioned they ran out of stock.

The senior in-charge heard all this and scolded him as to why he is lazy to go get it from inside. Another guy went inside and got an entire bundle of those background stickers and gave me one.

Now it was time for mounting the plates, I saw my plates and was immediately disappointed with the quality of the plates, the black text stickers were already chipping, but nothing can be done now.

Stepping on the plates to drill them

The guy was stamping on the plates with his dirty shoes and drilling the plates, when I saw this I bought it to his notice and strictly told to use bubble wrap for if he were to step on my plates and drill. I got annoyed at how careless they were with this entire thing. They could have handled things better.

Compressor Belt Tensioner Change

The compressor belt tensioner was making horrible bearing noises so to narrow down to the fault, I removed the tensioner and the noise had disappeared. Got a new tensioner from MGP and installed it at home. It was fairly easy.

Wrapping the B Pillars

I had a roll of carbon fiber vinyl and time in hand during a weekend, Thought of wrapping the B-Pillar since the OEM wrap on the pillars was wearing out, removed them and applied the CF vinyl using my trusty heat gun. Fairly easy. Only time will tell how long they will last. It’s been about 4 months since I applied and they have held up pretty well. Maybe on another lazy weekend I will wrap the A pillars as well.

Sourcing the front and rear bumpers.

The Front and Rear bumpers had taken quite a bit of damage and I was in no mood to repair them. Decided to go for new bumpers but MSIL has discontinued the type 1 Swift bumpers since last year now and I didn’t know this until I went to MGP and enquired about it. I was hell bent on retaining at least the type 1 look for the front bumper. Raised a complaint to Maruti and within 2 weeks they shipped Type 1 bumper and Type 2 rear bumper to my MGP. Collected the same from MGP and will be painting the bumpers and installing them later this year.

Tyre Alignment

Again a regular habit developed after plonking in the Continentals to align and balance them every 5000kms.

Alignment values

Was happy to see the alignment was not disturbed much at all. Jae’s did a good job like always, Mr Praveen interacts with every customer regardless of the car and I feel that’s a very nice approach to understand the customer. I’m really really happy with these Continental UC6’s, the grip they offer and the road noise which is almost nill makes the drive even more pleasant.

I went through another Forum where a member had installed this in his Swift which was PKDM(Pakistan Domestic Market) running a M13A Engine and it had a basic clock which displayed only Time. Lucky for him he did not have to swap the BCM for it to read and display Ambient temperature on the JDM Monitor. He only had to install the Ambient temperature sensor and put the pins into the BCM and install the JDM Monitor.

The clock is not available in India. I had to import it and later sold it to my friend. Will let you know if there are possibilities but the chances seem slim

Thanks! I actually found a website in pakistan but it only ships out to Pakistan and USA so no luck there.. https://www.autokings.pk/products/su...erature-sensor

What about the clock from Dzire that you use now? Can you share the part number? Is it plug and play for the ZXi model Swift?

I actually found one in Ireland but the part number is 62J51 and another one was 62J50.. Will that be an issue? The parts on European Swifts look identical but don’t know if they are cross compatible. Attaching the pic for reference

It's available on Boodmo currently. Part number: 34600-74K00

They are cross compatible. The ones ending with J50 series have the option of AVG Fuel Efficiency in addition to the instantaneous Fuel efficiency. The one which I procured earlier did not have the AVG Fuel Efficiency option but just the Instantaneous Fuel Efficiency. So getting the Clock ending with J50 series is a better option. Yes, it's plug and play for your ZXi since it's a K12M engine.

Also that clock photo which you have posted looks a bit odd, how come the display is black. Do note there are two types of clock, one with orange backlight and another one with red backlight similar to what Previous generation GV's got. Looks like the photo of the clock what you have posted has the Red backlight.

Hello Ashton!
My swift actually crossed 122000 kms this month so took it for oil change and general service at Maruti as I hadn’t got the timing belt replaced at 1 lakh kms. To my surprise they did not push me to get it done and told me that it is not regularly done in petrol cars even though it is mentioned in the service booklet. Had also noticed some unusual vibrations from the car on idle and got it checked… came to know that the engine mounts will need replacing and will cost around 4k. Do you think that is a fair estimate? I am quite sceptical about Maruti service as I have not had a great experience in the past when it comes to their repair charges.

Thanks in advance,
Akhil

Since yours is a K12M, it doesn't use a Timing belt rather it uses a Timing chain. You can get the chain, tensioner and water pump replaced. You may also flush and fill new coolant since the water pump is removed. There are 3 engine mounts for the Swift and I'd suggest replacing all there. the cost for all 3 mounts is 2800rs which is cheap.

Re: Azure Grey 2006 Maruti-Suzuki Swift VXi | Ownership Review

Adding Keyless Entry System

The type 1 Swift 2005-2007 models did not get immobiliser and only the ZXi got the Keyless entry system from factory. I began to learn about how the remote central locking system works. So as per the Service manual, the central locking module just acts as an intermediate device between the door actuators, door switches and the BCM.

The BCM controls
• Power door lock
• Combination meter
• Interior light
• Warning buzzer
• Rear end door window defogger
• Tailgate opener

Since the Locking Unlocking of the doors is done by the BCM, it just needs the central locking module connected in between the wiring.

Whilst I was always on the lookout for adding this into my Swift, the entire kit for the Type 1 Swift was out of production and no where in stock.
Part number: 990J0M75JF0-020
Price- 5546

Bummed out, I decided that I would go for the OEM Central locking system ONLY whatever the cost. I also observed that the facelifted Swift / Swift Dzire gets an updated dashboard wiring harness that contains the 24 pin connector and immobiliser wiring as well. This same 24 pin connector is present in all the Swift’s / Dzire, Ritz (2009-2011), and SX4, A-star. So getting the security controller box and the wiring was the only thing left.

Parts required to complete.
•37187M75J00 TRANSMITTER ASSY,SECURITY
•37220M75J00 SWITCH ASSY, SECURITY
•37225M75J00 HOOD PIN SWITCH ASSY
•38521M75J00 CONTROLLER ASSY,SECURITY
•38522M75J00 SIREN ASSY, SECURITY
•36602M74K10 HARNESS ASSY INSTRUMENT PANEL

So total expense looked to cross the 10,000rs mark
I managed to source the security controller box, Remote key and also the dashboard wiring harness from the scrapyard for super cheap. The rest of the stuff was procured from Boodmo.

Clarity Car Audio based in Goa was kind enough to send the Suzuki ISO connector for the head-unit.

I also had to transfer the rear wiper wiring, steering audio controls wiring from my old wiring harness into the new one. Modified the wiring harness at home and kept it ready for the Swap. I had to make sure that the security controller box and remote was working before attempting to install it on my car. A good friend lent me his Swift 2009 VXi to try this and I managed to pair the remote and the controller easily. Speed locking was also working perfectly at 25kmph.

I undertook this swap over 3 days since I was doing this alone in my village, dashboard was out again and made sure all was perfect. My engine bay wiring harness already had the connectors for the bonnet switch and the siren.

Younger cousin applied metal primer on it.

While the dashboard was out I had a look at the cooling coil as well,

Azure Grey 2006 Maruti-Suzuki Swift VXi | Ownership Review-img_20231212_194723415.jpg
I wasn’t expecting it to be shining with no debris.

The highlight is that I managed to recover my 1/4" socket attachment which I dropped into the defogger vent and it had made it’s way on top of the cooling coil. So after 3.5 years it is back into the tool kit.

Wiring harness part number

The dashboard wiring was clamped back onto the crossbar and fitted onto the car but to my horror the lock unlock feature via remote was not working and the car wasn’t starting. At this point I got chills up my spine and also was wondering where did I go wrong or what did I miss. As I turn the key to start the car, the starter relay clicks but the car doesn’t crank. Back to referring the service manual, I realised that in the facelift models the ground to the starter motor was wired differently. I compared it with my previous stock wiring harness and noticed one pin was missing in the new wiring harness.

Azure Grey 2006 Maruti-Suzuki Swift VXi | Ownership Review-img_20231213_221700340.jpg

I slid a suitable pin in it and grounded it to the chassis and turned the key over. The car cranked and was back to life. Sign of relief !! next was to assess why the lock unlock feature was not working via remote. I realised the type 1 floor wiring has the door wires on the right rather than on the left where the dashboard wiring attaches. Unfortunately I had to resort to using scotch locks here and used tessa tape over that point to absorb the vibrations and reduce rattles. Post this the lock unlock started working flawlessly.

I also sourced the SX4 immobilizer, which contains the illuminated key light. Now since my car doesn’t have an immobilizer it could easily install it since the provision on the steering column was already present and the new dashboard wiring already had the immobilizer connector, inserted pins into the connector to give it a signal via the cabin lamp.

Another addition was that the BCM had a provision for wiring an additional 12V socket for the boot like the ZXi.

12V socket in the Boot

Wrapped up everything back carefully with new clips and made sure nothing is left loose. Drove and made sure that everything is working as expected. No issues to report. Since dad is the primary driver of the car now, I got him the key with the remote integrated into one rather than a separate remote. Ordered the case from amazon for 230rs and the remote from Boodmo for 740rs 37182M59K00. Key cutting was done locally for under 150rs.

This was truly a painstaking process but I believe is worth it in the end since it's the OE Central locking system with all the features which are programmable.

More updates to follow !

@ashton can you please share the link from where you got your Swift's armrest? I had seen your post of buying a Swift and found that in accessories list. I have 2017 Swift and I am planning to add an armrest to it.
