You could be right Sumit.
But, hey, your local Tata dealer would be hard put to procure a 2X2 Safari, if someone should order that one!

(Couldn't resist that one!).

When i enquired before booking the safari i found out that in Mumbai none of the dealers kept stock of the 4x4. It was however available ex stock from the factory in Puna and all the dealers could confirm delivery within a week maximum. If the color choice was readily available then the time frame was 3-4 days max. at the time of my booking the dealer spoke to the puna factory HO in front of me and gave me the ready color options.
They had the colour I wanted so within a few hours I also got the engine & chassis numbers. The vehicle was then delivered to the dealers Mumbai yard in 2 days. Delivery time for the 4x4 depends upon the distance from the TML factory in puna & availability of colour choice...And above all it requires the commitment of the dealer to stick to his specified delivery time after confirming availability at the factory.

That is exactly what I am trying to convey. I believe that out of 10 Tata Safaris sold, 7 or 8 will be 2x4. As such, dealers don't stock 4x4 Safaris as it is slow moving and we all know that a company will only send a vehicle to a dealer after it has received full payment in advance. This also implies to all 2x4 vehicles that a dealer stocks. Thus the push by dealers to sell 2x4s rather than 4x4s.

The dealers dont stock even 4x2's. Or even Sumo Grande's. A dealer will book a vehicle with the company only after he receives a sufficient payment.

As has been said elsewhere, there may be a further delay till the dealer is able to book an entire truck. With 4x4's, even the company may be doing the assembling after getting an order - or atleast in batches. While that will add to the overall delay, it should not still deter dealers from pushing 4x2's.

Pearl white is the color, and the first highway trip will be when I get the car back to Delhi, or maybe the day of delivery or the very next day if we decide to go on a really really really long drive.

Good to hear that you have zeroed-in on the good looker, Tanveer. You will be taking enough halts in between for the new baby to cool down, right? A really long drive on day 2 needs to be done really carefully.

When I checked the prices for a new EX 4x4 in Cochin last, the OTR was actually marginally lower than what I paid 3 years back - that is after a 7% increase in Road Tax from 3% of Ex-Showroom to 10% (increase came into effect a year or so back). So prices have actually gone down - better/more powerful engine plus body coloured cladding, at lower prices, .
