On very cold and foggy mornings at 7 am, on a few occasions, my engine has not fired on first crank, but definitely on second. I've not considered it to be an issue at all. I usually crank for short bursts, less than 5 seconds perhaps.

Condensation in the intake manifold, maybe.

But my previous VLX apart from one instance at Sarchu, where VLX refused to start, it started at one crank even at sub zero temp throughout the Nagpur-Leh-Srinagar tour, so definitely something has changed, I am more worried because of AT, if the battery goes kaput I can't even push start!!

VLX Automatic

Pramod,
I have a question for you, now I know this has improved a lot in mhawk version of scorpio, but in automatic how do you rate the body sway for back seat passengers? (i guess you have captain seat for 2nd row).
Another one out of curiosity are you a Nagpur localite?
Regards

I won't be able to tell the body sway in back seat, till now I have only been on the driving seat, theoretically there should not be much difference in the previous VLX and this. In Nagpur since last 15yrs.

Congrats Pramod on your AT 4WD. I know we miss some cup holders and that handle in front of the passenger seat but I don't mind that in the least. Good vehicle for the price.

Does your tilt steering lever work? Mine doesn't. It seems to be stuck

Pramod,

Congratulations on the 4WD AT.

Your thread took me to the local Mahindra dealership this evening where I test drove a 2WD AT. What I could not see on the MID screen was the gear display. Does your vehicle's display show the gear that you are driving in at any given point of time.

No, there is no display for gears in the AT, this is a oversight by Mahindra they should have provided that info, but on second thought why would you need that, you just have 2 gear to slot, D and R to move if R you know you are moving back or else you are going straight!!

PS: Done some long driver yesterday, I have done 2.6K till now, 600KMS yesterday, the only problem is fuel efficiency, its below 10 since last 2 tank full and this too complete running on highways with 120+ and AC, the VLX manual used to give 11 in such condition.

Mine seems to be somewhere near 9kmpl in pure city driving - not exceeding 70kmph - mostly in the 30-40 kmph range - AC on half the time. This is just a rough estimate. Didn't get Xtra Mile today and didn't want to fill tank with regular diesel, so will have to wait some more before I can do more proper estimate.

on the contrary, it is advised to avoid premium diesels like turbojet, xtramile, etc. by mahindra, even my toyota for my innova. i have been regularly filling only normal diesel & believe me, as long as, you make sure the diesel quality is good, the vehicle behaves much better with normal diesel than with premium diesel.

Here are the detail of fuel and kilometers till now
1st Jan 2010---- 44lts------- Odo 24km ----- HiSpeed---Average 10.012km/lt@<100kmph
9th Jan 2010---- 41.55lts---- Odo 440km----- ExtraMile--Average 10.31km/lt@<100kmph
17th Jan 2010--- 41.03lts---- Odo 863km----- ExtraMile--Average 8.836 km/lt@<50kmph
23rd Jan 2010--- 27.5lts----- Odo 1106km---- Normal----Average 9.61 km/lt@>100kmph
26th Jan 2010--- 26.95lts---- Odo 1365km---- Normal----Average 10.317 km/lt@>100kmph
30th Jan 2010--- 39.45lts---- Odo 1772km---- ExtraMile--Average 9.194 km/lt@>100kmph
7th Feb 2010---- 30.02lts---- Odo 2048km---- Normal----Average 9.285 km/lt@>100kmph
7th Feb 2010---- 30.48lts---- Odo 2331km---- Reliance--

Average comes to 9.7km/lt and total cost of fuel Rs 10,430 were normal is Rs 36.29 ,reliance Rs 36.59 and premium Rs 38.10

I see if the vehicle is driven within 100kmph range the average where 10+ but its not in the city, almost 95% of this is on highway and only once below 50 when the mal function light came up I have to drive 160km on high at that speed.

so AT is not going to match the fuel efficiency of manual, the manual with same type of driving used to give me in range of 11, sometime topping at 12.

it s definitely on the cards that the AT will drink more Diesel than the manual - fact is that in normal daily traffic conditions when ones foot is on the brake, the auto transmission is sort of "half-engaged" all the time unless of course you switch off completely, which you may be able to at traffic lights but certainly cannot do in a bumper to bumper, start stop traffic scenario.
then it does need one to step on it a bit before it changes gear to higher gears unlike the manual where you can change gear by looking at your RPM gauge and anticipate a gear change faster than any automatic can.

All in all I would say 9.7/10kmpl in city is pretty fair for a Scorpio's bulk.
On highways, if you maintain the 90-110 kmph speed range, you will find the FE to be much better - this has been my experience in my MT 2.6 Crde Scorpio. Ive had a max return of 12.65 kmpl in my vehicle the last long trip I made because I was very careful not to go too fast and pretty much kept to the above range as far as possible. I was rewarded with better FE and now have decided to change my driving style accordingly.

@ pramods
have you been going heavy on the throttle during acceleration, coz that would explain the reduction in fuel efficiency.
i think the automatic scorp should be able to match the manual's figures on the highway as it has a tall sixth gear (so i have heard) however going heavy on the right foot will make the FE dip substantially in the auto as compared to the manual

Hey Promod,

Congrats on your purchase and the fact that all your problems got resolved without a fuss.

You mentioned that you changed the wheels from a Bridgestone to a Wanderer, this may sound noobish but I read that your FE can be improved by about 10-12% based on what wheels you use and if they are aligned properly and if the air pressure is correct. Could this be one of the reasons for your lowered FE other than the AT (obviously).

I changed to Geolander AT on day one itself, right now I am surely doing hard acceleration and that what I was used to with manual VLX, I have seen the 6th gear only getting engaged when it crosses 120kmph, not sure but the average was better when drive sedate in early stages[run-in period], I am not much concerned right now till 1st servicing and if it gives me 10+ would be happy, just wanted to update this if anyone need this type of info on fuel efficiency.
