Awesome Nick. For everyone else.. ctrl +F all banners/ Hoardings and replace them with clear sky, trees.

Everyday , am suprised looking at the same roads minus the hoardings and banners.

Chennai roads minus the hoardings!.

These are recent pics. I have mixed feelings. Maybe the buildings behind the hoardings need a whitewash?. Badly...

The first is right outside my office, how I wish the roads were so empty.

These posts shows how good chennai could be if its motorists are well discplined, instead of making a 3 lane into a 6 lane in the mornings and evenings. To experience the nightmare all one has to do is to cross the Gemini Flyover and enter nungambakam highroad after 18:30 and try reaching poonamalee highroad or vadapalani.

Good attempt ...

The govt has asked for all hoardings to be removed in Chennai? Why?

I guess their being a serious distraction to motorists, was the main reason. Plus some stuff about some of them being illegal or something like that.

There are quite a few trees in chennai. Looks more green now after the hoardings have been removed. Time to paint the buildings, I guess. Good going nick.

With no lights from the hoardings, some parts of Anna Flyover ( from cathedral road to DMS, Mount Road ) are really dark at nights.

Ah! Am feeling so good after seeing all these pics. I am from Bengal but was fortunate enough to spend 2 years at Chennai due to professional reasons. I must admit that initially (1-2 weeks), I was finding it so tough to adjust to this city (climate, food, language etc.). But right after that, I started loving this place and now when I have left Chennai (again for professional reasons), I miss it so badly. For so many reasons. For one, Chennai is the city which introduced me to the person with whom I will spend the rest of my life :-). Spencers, Besant Nagar beach, Marina, T Nagar...those were some of the best times, certainly.

Excellent pics there. Keep posting. Having come to Hyderabad, I really miss the more disciplined traffic of Chennai and the well maintained roads. Very good theme for photography.

BTW, how did you take such good pics while driving?!

Labor Day. All is quiet in the city with no billboards...

I HAD to go out in the morning and i took some pics while driving around....i still have mixed feelings about the billboards...'ugly' billboards or really ugly buildings?...what choices do we really have in Chennai?...it's like the animal activists in India who would prefer that the average citizen should brave the feral and disease ridden stray dogs that roam the streets while walking, rather than getting rid of the menace....most of these activists belong to the well heeled and drive around...would they adopt a stray dog?..show me one example...in the same vein, would any of the people who were responsible for bringing down the billboards , stop to whitewash the fungus ridden , unpainted buildings that have now been exposed for all of us to feast our eyes on?....the 'ugly' underbelly of Chennai exposed?...meanwhile, i continue to drive around....

Even if they are a little dirty, another coat of colour wash will do the trick. I feel a lot of breeze coming down now after the removal of hoardings.

I don't remember Kamaraj Salai (Marina Beach Road) as having any hoardings except for the junction with Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai (Edward Elliots Road).

Its nice to see these pictures. Makes one try and identify the locations.
