Came across this old picture on the net. The caption read: Lahore Division being brought to the Flanders front in London double decker buses - October 1914. (should be the WW I)

"Madras State" registration bearing vintage beauty. This is a recovery van of MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation - Chennai), basically a convert of a retired bus. This MSR registration (RTO, Chennai(East) @Basin Bridge) bearing vehicle should have been registered roughly between 1973-75. Still looking solid. These recovery van's used by the TN transport corp across give a good glimpse into the various face styles adopted 20-30 years back.

That couldnt be right, as by then (post 1970) the entire 'Madras state' was renamed as Tamil Nadu and by the early 70s the first regn. was the TM series (TMW, TMY etc.)

Illustrated Weekly of India, a popular magazine going back several decades, had an aricle in 1954 or 55 featuring an overland trip from West Germany to India. This trip was a proving and publicity drive by three Mercedes-Benz trucks . The trucks made it intact and arrived in Delhi and then proceeded to Calcutta. This was just before Tata set up their truck plant. The rest is history.

A small correction: The drive took place after Tata had set up the Jamshedpur plant and was meant to prove that Indian-made Mercedes trucks were as good as the German ones.

Here are some photographs of a 1955 German Tractor - Hanomac R 12. This has a 500 Cc Diesel engine. Tractor is a new addition at " The Titus Museum of Transportation & Collectibles" .

What is the story of this tractor? Old German tractors are not so common in India, most tractors came from East European countries. Was this from some sort of aid program? Just curious.

Understand this tractor came along with the plant & machinery when a cement factory with German collaboration was set up in the 50s, near Gwalior.

This recovery van must have been registered during the 1960's(I do not know which is the exact year) because from the year 1970-71 onwards the registration nomenclature for all the registration districts for the state of Tamilnadu began with the letter T.For example the registration nomenclature for the city of Madras as was called then(now Chennai) was TMC.

Mr.Kaleem Khan a workshop owner in Nizamuddin, New Delhi, who restores vintage and classic cars has been appointed by the Ministry of Railways, to restore and look after some of the petrol engines in the Rail Museum, New Delhi.
