More than the tri star over the grill, the Tata Mercedes logo just above the grill holds more value. Quite rare to find one these days.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

ON my recent drive to KL, saw atleast 10-12 trucks beloging to Toll (Welcome to Tollindia).
I have also seen lots of linfox trucks too on the road recently.
Seems like lots of australian logistics firms are setting shop in India.

The Toll trucks looks really good and and the drivers too seems to be good. reason being, saw all trucks being driven in a reasonable pace so as not to block the traffic behind, always on left side and also switching to low beam whenever they see a vehicle coming(even if it is a 2 wheeler). Good going.

VE Commercial Vehicles, a joint venture between Eicher & Volvo merges 3 units!

Quote:
In a bid to deal more effectively with competition, India's third-largest commercial vehicle player VE Commercial Vehicles, an equal joint venture between the Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, has restructured the organisation by merging three different profit centres - Eicher Trucks and Buses, Volvo Trucks and the Powertrain unit.
Quote:
The joint venture has already invested 700 crore and plans to invest 1,000 crore more in the next few years. The fresh investment will go into a medium-duty engine project, a new paint shop, capacity expansion and R&D.
Quote:
Raising our sales from 25,000 units to 50,000 units was not that hard, but as we move from 50,000 units to 1,00,000 units, we need to have a better organisational and operational structure in place,"

A bit out of place for this thread, but does anyone know more about the Crossley mentioned in this link?

Most certainly a Royal Flying Corps 20/25 Crossley Staff Car fitted post WW1 with extra jump seats where the map reading table would have been.
In wartime it would have been fitted with one twin spare for fitment to either front an rear axles. The twin construction had two rims spoked through a drum onto one hub.
Two examples are existent, one extensively rebuilt and now in Germany. The other which is in my possession was supplied new to Bombay,India in 1914 and returned in 1966 untouched but having been always been in use.
Capable of 60mph and ruggedly constructed between 8 and 10 thousand of the RFC Crossleys were built including the RFC tender variant. Each Royal Flying Corps squadron had one Staff Car and 8 or 9 Crossley Tenders.
Post war the Tenders became the vehicle of choice for the Black and Tans in Ireland and were subsequently used by the IRA, RIC and RUC.
Many others were converted into small Coaches during the 1920's.

Re: The Classic Commercial Vehicles (Bus, Trucks etc) Thread.

Here is a DeSoto van that I've been seeing all my life, literally. It still does delivery duty at Shivaji Market, Pune, next door to my school so I'd see it every morning. Used to have the DeSoto script on the front last that I remember it. Its used and abused to no end, but still standing and delivering! Hope it is not eventually scrapped, but I see no other option for it.

Check out the Crossley in this link, its about the same vintage and looks like a 20/25.

However, I note Tom Fryers says the car was returned in 1966. Doesn't that mean returned to England?

It could be a Tata too since production of this long bonnet model (which looked identical to TMB trucks) continued till 1975 when it was replaced by the shorter bonnet, semi-forward control model called 1210S which was redesignated as 1210SE in 1977.

The picture does not show any visible logos. A closer examination of the truck would reveal whether it is TMB or just Tata.

These used to be everywhere with no Bajaj's in sight.
This is not an autorickshaw but a delivery van sighted in Delhi, that has fallen on bad days!

Yes . I got it as a gift for my Birthday this Year. (Duly Gifted to Myself hehehe) I have not posted any pics yet. Got it home on my birthday itself, just the day before i embarked for canada. so just put a cover to save it from Rains and went off. Now that i have come back and no sign of the rains, i think i will take it out for a spin in a day or two. Pics will be duly posted..

Its a running example. I rode it back home from the Owner (again a single owner example) It covered a distance of around 11 kms without a glitch. The owner dint use it but used to move it around in his alley once in 2 weeks so everything was in working order when i got it. And thanks to My Friend Ilango from this forum got me some extra Spares too, which he got from his hometown. The 3 Wheeler has everything intact except the Headlamp and front Monogram, the original Indicators (Square with white and red colour lenses) are still there, the Speedo too seems original (need to confirm though).

This is the roll out of the first CKD assy at Jamshedpur. One can see at least 2 future Telco GM's in this pic. Mr. Biman Bose and Mt KC Mazumdar. The caucasian gentlman is one of the German guests

Attachment 843549
The Sikh gentleman is the customer who had bought the very first TMB truck. As a mark of appreciation, Telco gave him the 100,000th vehicle in liu of the 1st one, which was trasnfered to the museum. This pictures is from early 60's. The person giving away the key is Mr. Sumant Mulgaonkar, ED. The caucasian gentlman is Mr. Hans Stoehr, the first GM of Telco. I believe even this 100,000 truck was taken back sometime in 70's under a similar arrangment.

Attachment 843546
This is the 1st export of TMB vehicle. I think in 1961 and to Ceylon.
