The first body was indeed a tourer by Cunard, as Steve mentioned. The car was rebodied by Windover in 1926, the first body having been on the car for only 5 years. The licence plate on the SG in front of the Mayurbhanj Municipal Office is definitely a "Mayurbhanj State" plate - with the charecteristic little silver crest at the top middle of the plate. | ![]() ![]() ![]() The location of Harit's photo seems to be the old hangar at the Bombay Flying Club, Juhu ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() ![]() The lady on the left in Harit's photo is probably Mrs. F.D.Petit, incidentally the first Indian woman to get her flying "A" Licence. The car was probably used by the Petit family during its "demonstration" days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() The RR Phantom II "X-7998" is very likely chassis 91XJ. This car started out as "Stock" with the Western Indian States Motors, Jodhpur. Later sold to Maharajkumar Bijey Singhji of Bikanir. Original colours were polished aluminium and tangerine. The car seems to have gotten a straight sided windshield before sale to Bikanir. Yet later, the wing lamps were changed from the low profile "Alvis" type. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The confusion in all of this is that in Harit's photo of the car at Juhu, there seems to be a Jeep windshield visible behind the RR. Which would then date the photo to during or post WWII (1939+) 91XJ went to Bikanir in 1934 (or earlier). Last edited by travancore : 18th August 2018 at 22:23. |

| ![]() Reposting what I had posted on the Hyderabad Automotive Legacy site: The 1927 R-R Phantom I, Chassis 64EF, Hooper Tourer, off test April 1927. Finished in Parsons Audley (?) Green with Black wings, etc. Indian Demonstrator. Sold to His Excellency Nawab Moinud-Dowla Bahadur (spelt exactly as on the Chassis card) with a guranatee date of Jan 11, 1930. Price Rs.21,000 + allowance for old car Rs.10,000. In its initial days as a R-R India demonstrator (Regn Y-2796), it travelled as far as the Khyber Pass! Used for many tours of Viceroy Irwin, including Hyderabad; and by Sir John Simon of the infamous Simon Commission. Even appeared in a Dunlop advertisement in 1929. At one point, part of the Paigah fleet with a Woody/Shooting Brake body (Regn 791) and later probably with the Chenai family with the same body (HYX-2144). Yet later as a chop top (MSY-4765) ; and now likely with that same body as part of the Sanghi collection (MP-09-W-4354). Unfortunately, the only photo I have seen while with Nawab Moin-ud-Din Khan Bahadur is that lovely wedding photo from 1937. The dates attached to the photos are dates of publication (could be as many as 2 years from the actual event). Enjoy the many phases (faces) in the life of 64EF........ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Superb, and thanks for sharing. I wonder if the D registration was Delhi or English at the time? If Delhi, we usually saw them on white plates. | |
